Being the oldest university of Japan this is a true marvel of Japanese culture and heritage. Beautiful and tranquil.

Ashikaga is a must see. The south and north ponds are both beautiful but my favorite is the north. The set up and foliage are so that it is beautiful during all four seasons. They have english guided tours also. They also provide an English pamphlet. This and the surrounding area are beautiful.

This school is said to be the oldest school in Japan. All the buildings and garden in excellent shape and well maintained. Parking lot in the vicinity is free of charge too. Very recommendable on a sunny day.

Established in 832 A.D. as a school to study the teachings of Confucius this "university" stayed in operation as a school until 1921. None of the original building remain, however the gates, buildings, dorms. etc. have been reconstructed in wood to match the originals. Well, well worth seeing if you are in the area and have any interest at all in Japanese history, this school is mentioned in every Japanese History and social studies book. The reconstruction is accurate and most delightful.Since these are reconstructions of the original buildings inside access is not available for wheel chairs, but the grounds are flat

Be sure to get the English language guide booklet when you enter and pay the admission fee it is excellent. One of the best I have found in Japan, probably done by the Ministry of Education if I were to guess.

There is a short 15 minute movie which is worth watching even if you do not speak any Japanese.

This is one of if not the oldest school in Japan! Statues of Confucius, very old architecture, and a very cheap entrance fee. Great place to just relax for a while if you've got the time, read some plaques, soak up some of the atmosphere.

The city around the school has built up quit a bit, not to the point of sky risers but the ancient grounds are a bit out of place.

Not far from Orihime Jinjya either for those on foot (like me).

I had the pleasure of visiting this school in August - taken around by local people. It is definitely worth seeing. The grounds are beautiful and you can almost visulise the students in their classes. Locals tell me that there is a tradition where students hung pieces of paper with difficult questions that they can't answer and the next day it would be answered by other students. How fantastic!

The rockery and japanese gardens between the buildings are something else. A definite treasure and worth visiting if you have the chance.

Visiting this school is nice, because it is different from the typical shrines and temples that one normally visits in the area. The layout and history associated with the school is interesting and it is a very relaxing place to visit (Visited 2007)

This is an amazing old relic in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Situated about one hour by Ryomo train outside Tokyo, it is the oldest school in Japan. Obviously no lessons are taught there !!!! Its a little old !!! Still however, its a truly amazing place.

I was lucky to visit and it is indeed a beautiful site. Wonderful area to walk around and look at all of the different buildings, exhibits and history. Would be much better is everything had translations so English speakers could understand better what they are looking at. There is a nice brochure which you receive at the entrance but it doesn't cover everything you see so you loose some of the historical importance of your visit. I was lucky as I had my wonderful Japanese girlfriend with me to translate but could see how others might be a little disappointed. Still a wonderful site to visit and one I would highly recommend to everyone.

To be able to set foot and visit the buildings of the oldest university in Japan was a privilege. It was steeped in history and the library was especially interesting. With the entrance fee, instead of a ticket, you receive a printed calligraphy card which says that you are now entering as a new student of this school. Thought this was a clever idea and gave it a more personal feel.
