This is a great onsen choice when you in Ueda. It is nothing terrifically fancy, just a nice place to enjoy hot springs and relax. The staff are friendly, the meal tasty, especially if you are a visitor and want to experience traditional Japanese food.

We visited the Oyu Onsen in the town and saw two of the temples in this quaint little village. Definitely a country town and so your expectations should be adjusted if you're fresh in from Tokyo (which we were). Lovely overfrown streets lead to hidden...More

"Onsen town" in Nagano prefecture. It is a clean and peaceful place and everybody is so friendly. When we walked around to visit some temples and shrines (not very big, but good atomosphere with 1000 years history), some of local people asked us whether we...More

A great place to wander around for a few hours, visit temples & gift shops, have a dip in a day bath, and eat lunch. Easily accessible by quaint private train line from Ueda Station.

Ryokans Hanaya and Kashiwaya Besso are a bit of a splurge, but will have you drooling with their classic traditional construction. Public baths O-Yu (historical architecture) and Ishi-Yu (were Sanada's ninja bathed) are classic.

The town has 3 traditional public onsen. All cost 150 yen and can be paid for by the vending machine near it's door. So if you don't speak Japanese, no problem. Men and women are separated. Local people use it as a place to scrub,...More
