“Quick access to the hill top”

With 500 yen it saves you from puffing up the hill. Nice views on the ropeway car. Once you get off at the hill top, head to the observatory above the station for a small souvenir counter and a small gallery on the geology of the hill.

There is no shame using the ropeway either up, down or both, as you will be doing TONS of walking and stairs at the top. The line can look quite long, but in my experience, it moved pretty fast. You can buy a one way ticket or a round trip ticket. Please keep in mind, if you do buy round trip, you will have moved down the mountain quite some way, and have to hike back up to then take the ropeway back down. Though overall, it's less walking back up, than it is to hike the mountain all the way back down. We went on a clear day and the ropeway was our first experience of the amazing views Mt. Nokogiri has to offer.

Nice Ride to Nokogiriyama

It is a nice, scenic, and maybe crowded ride to see the Daibatsu in Nokogiriyama. A short walk from the ferry. A bit pricey, but so is everything else in Japan.

Don't go on a cloudy day, you have to pay extra to see all the temple/Buddhas

Went yesterday (August 21, 2018) and it was really cloudy so when we went to the top we barely saw through the clouds which wasn't bad but it was the same view all around. The ropeway for 2 round trip costs 1860 yen. We took the ropeway up since it was kind of sprinkling and we hiked this tiny trail down to where all the temple were and you had to pay extra to have access to them which I didn't see on their site or anyone else's reviews. Maybe if you hiked up you don't have to pay but if you take the ropeway up you have to pay and its 600 yen per person and cash only which we didn't have so that was a bummer. There isn't anything else to see if you don't get to see the Buddhas or temples at the top. Ropeway takes about 7 mins each way and comes about every 15 minutes. You have to que up in line to get in.

Getting there from Tokyo Station takes about 2 and a half hours. You can google map your destination "Mount Nokogiri Ropeway" and it will appear. Once you get out of the final station walk straight and make a left and its about 10 minute walk to the ropeway ticket booth.

I also saw a lot of Locals bring picnic baskets into where the shrines were so I imagine there was some really nice area with a view so I would bring your own food up there to enjoy. There is a small cafe with restrooms that sell snacks only. Saw about 4 restaurants along the walk up to the ropeway but they don't open until at least 11:00 AM or 1:00 PM.

IMPORTANT: Since the ropeway is in a very small town the trains don't come as often as Tokyo, not by a long shot. By the time we decided to head back into Tokyo we saw that google maps told us that the next train leaving their only station wasn't coming until 45 minutes. So plan accordingly and have lunch or know when to start queing up in line to go back down or hike back down and then time for walking back to the station.

My suggestion is take the ropeway one way. Either up, or down. The ropeway is great but to see everything (like the buddha and temple) you must hike down. And if you are stubborn like me and bought a round trip ticket without knowing, you must hike all the way back up afterwards... by hike I mean walk up ALL the stairs. And there are many. But it was so worth it. I took the ferry from Kurihama over. Pretty awesome day trip.

Easy way to the top

The ropeway is a quick and efficient way to get to the top of the mountain. The hike around the mountain is awesome - temples, statutes,stone Buddha and beautiful views.

More than just a ropeway!

I'm confused why TripAdvisor has this listed as just a ropeway, since at the top of the mountain there's a gorgeous Buddhist shrine with so much to explore. I went here in the peak of the summer, but despite the uncomfortable amount of sweating I did I thought this place was magical. This mountain has the largest Buddha statue in Japan and hundreds of small statues that were hand crafted by Buddhist monks. Each one has their own character, it's just wonderful to explore this mountain! Don't hike the mountain in summer, we came across two hikers who told us "This way only leads to suffering" since they had gotten lost and had to double back on themselves!
The shrine has lots of stairs, nothing too strenuous but could be a struggle for some people.

Buy cable car tickets first then join queue.

First thing. If it's busy buy the rope way tickets before joining the queue for the cable car. Nicest way to get here is on the ferry. Nice trip

Great family day out

We used the rope way to get to the top of the mountain and spent 4 hours walking around to see the amazing views and even more amazing stone Buddha's and of course the largest Buddha in Japan which is very impressive (having visited on a very warm humid August day I can't possibly imagine how this place was created without modern machinery and by hand). Recommend carrying water with you and there are also plenty of vending machines around to buy drinks. Not recommended for anyone who has difficulty walking as there are lots of steep steps.

Amazing natural scenery and cultural icons

Directed here by a local colleague, I took the train to Hama-Kanaya station and took the less-than-10-minute walk to the Ropeway (go straight out of the station until you hit the main road, turn left and follow it until you see the sign pointing to the left). I bought the two-way ticket for 930yen. On boarding, an official photographer offers to take a photo of you in front of the cable car. When you come back down, they will offer it for you to buy for 1100yen - I declined. It was a nicely taken, well focused and lit photo, but I don't need an 1100yen photo of myself! The car comes every 10 minutes and it takes about 5 minutes either way. Fitting about 30-40 people, it's a very convenient way to get to the top of the mountain. The alternative is to go around the back by car (or walk about 2km from Hota station) and walk up the mountain.
