You will learn history and culture of Wajima here. We were not planning on not visiting here but was recommended by the Ryokan we stayed. We were glad we went there. It is a must-see place.

After going to this small museum which displays the lantern floats I want to go back for the matsuri (festival) in August. Great video of people having a wild time.

This museum is off the beaten path, but it is well worth finding it and investing an hour or so wandering through the amazing lanterns. The price is affordable, about JPY600/person, and colors and sounds are a reward for the senses. There is limited English available, so best visit with a Japanese speaker or simple enjoy the exhibits without the cultural or historical explanations. We were wowed!

This museum focuses on the lanterns that are used in local festivals. These lanterns are huge and must be carried by a large group of strong people. Their decorations are elaborate and colorful. The museum also gives perspective on the festival and illustrates a couple of other festivals that occur in the area. Many of the signs are in English making it easy to follow the displays. There is also a brief introductory talk when you arrive that was in Japanese on the day we visited.

We came for the weekly free Taiko drumming performance, in which masked characters beat different rhythms on the one drum - fantastic! After the crowd had left we stayed behind for a personal tour of the 'giraffe garage' where the lantern floats (Kiriko') are kept and displayed. At Wajima there must be at least 15 floats of various sizes.

Took a full day bus trip from
Kanazawa. This is the best part of the trip. It was an amazing sight to see such huge Kiriko side by side and the lighting effect was great. Unfortunately the explaination is all in Japanese. But the video upstairs showed the festivals in which the Kiriko was used and one can really feel the excitement and the impact. It would be worthwhile to actually attend the festival if the timing is right.

My favourite museum in Japan so far. It's not big and only features lanterns but someone has really thought about how to make the most of the exhibits and the story of how they are used. Modern building, different experience on each floor level, helpful staff. A must-see if you are in Waijima.

This was part of our Noto tour package. Though the museum was a little bit small, the kiriko/festival lanterns inside were amazing. It houses many lanterns of different sizes which are used in festivals. However the giant lanterns (around 3-4 story high) just stays inside the museum for display purposes. I love how the lighting inside the museum highlighted the lanterns. The changing lights gave a dramatic effect while the staff is explaining the history of the lanterns. We were also given a chance to carry a kiriko! What an awesome experience. Worth the visit.

Kiriko museum houses "kiriko lanterns"...the huge paper lanterns used in summer festivals in different parts of Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa.
This museum was relocated to a new site closer to Wajima' morning market, and has a very different look from the previous place which was a bit old, and a cramped display style. The new museum has a better lighting, and a better barrier-free design.
Thanks to museum's new design, we were able to see kiriko from two different levels and from different angles, making it easier to appreciate the lanterns.
Each lantern has its own personality, with kanji (Chinese characters) calligraphy, lacquer coating and ornate decoration, so it's fun to discover these differences.
If you don't get a chance to see these lanterns in action at local kiriko festivals when people parade these impressive lanterns through their towns with festive chants, then a visit to kiriko museum is a MUST!
Museum also shows a video of different kiriko festivals, and staff gives a talk at regular intervals. Unfortunately, the video and most of explanations are in Japanese only.
Museum has a small souvenir shop and a spacious parking lot.
Best way to get to Kiriko kaikan is by a rental car, but if you're not driving, you can take a bus from Kanazawa to Wajima, and get off near Wajima Morning Market (Wajima Asa-Ichi)
Entry Fee: 620 Yen (adults) / 350 Yen (children)
Open: 08:00- 17:00

The Kiriko Lantern Museum has relocated to Wajima's growing Marine Town development. The new building has been superbly designed to showcase the beautiful lantern floats. I clearly remember my reaction when I walked into the exhibition hall - wow! It is one of the best festival float museums I have visited. I highly recommend the Kiriko Lantern Museum which is one of the sightseeing highlights of Wajima.
If possible, also try to catch the nightly Taiko drum performance from 8.30 pm - 9.00 pm. It is held adjacent to the Kiriko's exhibition hall (part of the display is used as a backdrop). It was great fun!
