車で通ると、なんとなく宿場町であったことは雰囲気を感じるだけで、よくわからずに通過してしまいます。けれども歩きながら通ると、いたるところに説明板があり、坂本宿を楽しむことが出来ます。宿場の入口には木戸が作られていて、京都側の木戸を上木戸、江戸側の木戸を下木戸と呼んでいたとのことです。下木戸は一部が復元されています。宿場内に当時の建物はほとんど残っていませんが、旅籠の「かぎや」は当時の面影を残しています。

緩やかな坂

横川駅から旧道経由で碓氷峠へ向かう途中にありました。宿場の町並みは直線のゆるやかな上り坂になっており、交通量は新道に比べてそれほど多くなく、静かな雰囲気でした。道路脇にはむきだしの水路が流れており、きれいな水流れていました。日帰り温泉があるようでしたが次回訪れた際よってみようかと考えています。

横川から軽井沢へ北斎が歩いた旧中山ヲトレッキング。電柱もなく整備されていて歩きやすかったです。一本道の直線で宿場町だったんだと想像できますが。ポツンぽつんと古い家は残ってますが写真映えはしないですね。

坂本宿。宿場を盛り上げていこうという情熱が感じられた。当時の地図を見ながら歩くと楽しい。「この立派な建物に一番偉い人が泊まって、あっちの小さい方に、その家来が泊まったのかな？」みたいな。
知識がある人と歩くと更に良い。

宿場町部分は歩道完備です

観光化されていないので、歩くだけになってしまいますが雰囲気は味わえます。
小林一茶や若山牧水の泊った宿を示す案内看板がありました。
峠の湯からであれば歩道完備です。車を停めて、歩くのがおすすめです。

静かな宿場町跡

一直線の道路の両側に家屋が並ぶ。所々に本陣跡等が点在しているだけだが、中山道の宿場として賑わっていた雰囲気は感じられる。

江戸から何番目かわかりませんが、宿場町でした。街並みが当時を語っていますが、古い建物は残ってはいません・・・雰囲気だけはありますよ。

かつての面影はあまり残っていない

江戸から来ると、坂本宿は碓氷峠を登る前の最後の宿場。それだけに江戸時代にはかなり栄えた宿場だったと思われるのですが、今はあまりその面影はありません。それでもいくつかかつての姿を思い起こさせる建物が残っていて、それらはなかなか風情があります。まっすぐな一本道が印象的な宿場跡でした。

お店が少ない

アプトの道からの帰りに寄ったが、整備された道路とはうらはらに、お店が2件しか無いのには驚いた。空き家が多く若い人が少ないためか。

宿場町の名残あり

旧18号碓氷峠を下ってきて、平地にでたなといったところが坂本宿です。名残の看板石碑があり、街並みも道路の両側にきれいに整備されています。各屋号が掲げられていて、風情があります。観光化していないので、やたらな土産物店などはないです。アプトの道を横川からスタートしていくと、ここを通過していくので、車だけだとすぐに通り過ぎてしまいます。
