Nice visit, but only worthwhile if you're not going to visit other cities nearby, where you can find better places to visit...not the best value for money experience, but if you have some time to kill...

I was attracted by the reflection of the building and the garden. So we took the long distance bus for 1 hour 45 minutes to Vila Real and took a bus #1 to Mateus and walked for 15 minutes to the palace. There are 2 different tickets, for the garden only and for the garden as well as palace. There... More

As with all this buildings from the past, this one had great character and some of the contents left the visitor truly speechless! However, even though we visited late in the season the gardens where without doubt the star attraction. Just wish that we had been able to see them in their full glory in late spring. We humans are... More

Obviously the palace and gardens have been spectacular at one time, but unfortunately damp, decay and insufficient maintenance have taken a toll. Some faded grandeur remains, but too much of what is on display indoors now is frankly junk, which detracts from the occasional good pieces. The gardens too still have some attraction from well-designed formal beds, but are woefully... More

Whilst traveling through the DOURO VALLEY we stopped to tour the grounds and see PALACIO DE MATEUS. As a child in the USA, my family drank Mateus wine. I never knew it was a Portuguese company before coming here. The gardens are fabulous, from sculpted hedges to fruit orchards to gorgeous fountains. The centerpiece is the REFLECTION POND that sits... More

The Mateus Palace wine estate dates to the first half of the 18th century. Descendants of the family of Count Vila Real still live here. The Mateus wine is still being produced here. There is a tour of the building beginning with the beautiful grand stairway and into the interior where priceless objects are on display. Then you can walk... More

We came in the late afternoon while on a private tour of the region. The gardens are absolutely phenomenal and you could wander for hours. The Castle itself is okay and in a Versailles mode. Definitely worth a look and of historical significance, with several nice looking restaurants in the surrounding area, though we did not stop to eat. The... More

Mateus Palace is a stunning baroque building. Richly appointed interior is very impressive. Many furniture and paintings are so beautiful. The gardens are well maintained, very photogenic. This is the most extraordinary country house I have visited.
