Staying in the Wanda International plaza will take approximately 1.5 hours to get to the summit. A lot of time to spend on a slow bus but it's absolutely worth it. When the bus arrives there is another 1km climb (stairs) to the lake. It stays mysteriously hidden until the very last hill before making its appearance. Its extremely cold at the top and we were only able to bear the cold for 15 minutes, the winds were also quite strong - hold onto your phones or cameras while taking pictures! It's a wonderfully serene view. Worth going back to view during other seasons.

Heaven lake is very beautiful but it all depends on luck to see it due to the weather of Changbai mountain. Weather is very unpredictable as it can be sunny at one moment and suddenly very cloudy or misty and the lake will be covered and not visible. We were there in mid September and we have a great view of the lake. We heard the next day there was snow at the mountain so the cable car was closed. So it all depends on luck very much. This is my second trip to Changbai mountain to view the heaven lake. My first trip was in the month of May few years ago and it was snowing in the mountain so everything is white and cant get a glimpse of the lake at all.

Our group of 15 climbed up to the summit of Mt Paektu in mid September, and we were the only ones there! Our bus took us as far as the cable car station that takes you down to the shore of Lake Chon ("the lake of heaven"). it was not running as there was no electricity available. We climbed up to the top of Mt Paektu, which is at 2750 M. We were told to wear warm clothes, but when we got there, the weather was warm and sunny, There is a huge sign on the outside of the mountain with letters reading "Holy mountain of the revolution". The funicular was also not working, but the view from the top was quite beautiful. There is a guard rail all the way up until you almost get to the summit, where you must cross over the rail and climb up the extra 10 m. There was a guard at the top and only permitted a few in our group to climb to the top then stopped the rest of us because he felt is was too dangerous. We could see the Chinese station on the other side of the caudera. Well worth the trip to be able to claim that you were at the highest point on the Korean Peninsular.

Nice weather n blessed , what a beautiful day ; it’s not difficult to climb the 1442 steps on the North Slope; avoid the west slope if possible

Most people say it’s often too foggy or the weather is too bad for the lake to be visible or clear. We were lucky then, it was a clear and beautiful day, and the lake was heavenly indeed

Having got to Changbai Mountains via a taxi and bus from Baishan, the major objective was to see Tianchi - the “Heavenly Lake”. Driving up the winding road to the tourism site we caught glimpses of the glistening white peaks. As there are no public amenities at the top of the mountain (only a single souvenir stall) its advisable to make a toilet stop before embarking on the climb. From the bottom looking up, there are two walkways, on the left the down staircase and on the right the up staircase. Unfortunately, especially for walkers going up the right-side steps, some people coming down ignore the clearly posted instructions on which walkway to use. So, walkers going up, regularly have to stop or manoeuvre round these people on the wrong side. On a hot day like the day we visited, this adds another obstacle to what is already a challenging walk up the mountain. It was not a easy walk and we found looking up as we went it was hard to gauge where the top exactly was because of the angle of the slope. Just when you were coming to a point where it looked like it ended, the stairway extended up yet another section!
The steps are marked at five metre intervals so you at least know how far you’ve gone. At the summit there’s a sign congratulating you on how high you’ve come (2,740m above sea-level). For those who can’t manage the walk there’s the option of hiring a sedan and two carriers to carry you up. And of course you can always stop and take a breather while admiring the beautiful vista. At the summit there’s a wooden platform from which you can view the serene and still landscape of Tianchi. This picture-perfect volcanic crater lake must be one of the most photographed rural lake settings in the world.

A brave solo travel of me to visit the Heavenly Lake at Mount ChangBai. This lake is one of my favourite dream destination. Able to be there, not only one day but two days from two different angles of view. Really worth & satisfying my soul. I visited by North & West sites. North has more smaller places of interests where the West gives you the full unblocked view of the heavenly Lake. West has to climb 1442 stairs. Opposite the lake, is the North Korea. So the lake is kind of the border between China & North Korea. At Fusong county that I stayed, the bus interchange is there & I can just start the tour by taking designated buses. Need not to join 1-day tour.

Far on the mountains bordering North Korea in Jilin Province lies this volcanic crater lake....
in a good weather day it looks magical right as in the photo....
The way there takes many hours, and the weather is often unfavorable (pay attention to check well in advance !) and long lines of domestic tourists, but once you have made it all - it worth the view!
The tourist services are surprisingly good , except of the long lines of visitors in each point of the visit..(buses, tickets box, gate lines and scenery points).
If the local tourist authorities will improve this, it will be really a great tour....

[disclaimer: This is the same review I posted before, as there are two entries for Changbaishan, and I think my review might be helpful.]

North slope: First you take a bus to a interchange "station" from where you take buses to other places. To go to Heavenly lake (Tianchi) you need to get an extra ticket (near where the buses stop, 80¥) and pass through a gate on the other side of the parking lot (I thought it was an entrance to a deer enclosure). There you take small buses to Tianchi - it's a fun ride, as the drivers take the turns super fast! The hike uphill is very easy and short and there are plenty of people, if you're lucky and the weather is good, the view is pretty great. Unfortunately the path closer to North Korea is closed. Then you can go to a waterfall, heavenly lake (same bus, two stops), and a "dell forest" which is the longest hike in the area (it's said it takes 80 minutes, but it's very easy to walk faster, for me it was about 50) Overall: surprisingly pricey (210¥ +80¥ for Tianchi), great sights, although I'd prefer more actual hiking than just the bus rides (although I have to give it to them, the places are super far away from one another)

West slope: again pricey (210¥) but no additional costs. Soon after I got onto the bus to the beginning of the trail, I lost coverage so remember to bring cash as wechat money will not suffice! Now for the trail... 1442 stairs with a few rest stops on the way (you can pay to be carried in a sedan chair!) and the view of the way is unobstructed and absolutely breathtaking. I was also lucky as it rained in the morning and stopped right when l started the hike - and when I was going downhill it got cloudy, but thanks to the bad weather there were just few people. After Tianchi lake you can go to a canyon, which is very pretty (although not very special), it's also a pleasant, not strenuous hike. And there are chipmunks!

If you have only one day I'd say west slope is the better option.

What's more: if you're unprepared, you can rent warm coats. It gets surprisingly cold - I went mid-June and although a fleece jacket was enough, I was sometimes a bit chilly, especially at the top. Also, the weather changes in a matter of minutes, so have a raincoat! There are some stands with food - mostly corn, eggs, and instant noodles, so it's probably a good idea to pack some snacks. Also, people everywhere in the area are super friendly, but they do not speak English (and why would they - during the two days there I met only Chinese and Koreans) - so prepare your google translate!
