Having been disappointed earlier in the week by our third visit to Chengdu’s panda reserve, we visited here on a wet Saturday. We guess the place has undergone major changes recently as our experience didn’t match previous reviews or descriptions in travel guides. No long walks or elevator rides. We had a 5 minute walk from parking to ticket office. From there you can either enter the safari park which we missed but I think like a zoo. We headed straight for the Panda reserve , there is a bus that takes you to the main entrance. They were very reluctant to allow our grandchild’s buggy, we were very pleased we insisted. I guess they may have refused if it had been busier. Once at the panda enclosures which are nicely spaced out in different areas, with good viewings of the outdoor spaces. We were lucky as the food had recently been put out so the pandas were active and eating, quickly fell asleep when finished. The meandering paths and roads take you down the gorge area. Once at the kindergarten area there is a electric tourist bus you can pay an extra 20RMB for an easy ride back up to main gate. Entry was 100RMB adults , over 60’s 30RMB, as usual , foreigners require passport .

Spend the Christmas Week volunteering at the panda centre. The staff there really took good care of the pandas. We do mainly panda husbandry which involves cleaning the night den, play area, smashing bamboos and peeling bamboo shoots for the juveniles. My favourite activity is making the panda cake and feeding it to the pandas. It was a wonderful experience.

One thing that requires improvement is the need to instruct in English, especially for international volunteers. They tend to use mandarin and some of us were quite clueless on what was going on. Thankfully, there were Chinese friends who can speak English so they helped us translate the instruction passed down by the staff.

Use of wifi there is limited and thus you need to use baidu or we-chat to make things more convenient.

You will receive a certificate at the end of the volunteer experience.

The centre is located amongst wonderful mountain scenery and is accessed by many tunnels through the mountains.
Juvenile pandas were observed interacting. Climbing trees, playing etc. It was difficult to photograph them without including distracting backgrounds such as Chinese flags, toys, man-made structures, concrete pathways etc.
Some adults were observed either resting or eating.
We waited for the museum to open at 1:30pm but it did not open at all.
Worth a visit for the spectacular scenery alone.

We came here to do the volunteer program they offer. It consists on cleaning cages putting in new bamboo tour of place and feeding the pandas.

This was a great experience and thanks to Tom who looked after us

Wish we had time to do again

Cutest they are. Saw just a few. Lot to walk. Lot of stairs. Well maintained park. Extraordinary view of the Gorges around. Lush vegetation, huge bamboo trees. After our visit here, come to know that in Chengdu itself there is another reserve with more pandas and lot of babies. Shuld I know, I wouldn't come here. Chengdu's reserve is just nearby the city and lots more to see.

Better place to escape from busy city. Fresh air calm environment and more greenish surrounding. You have to go through caged vehicle to see lions and tigers such a good experience for me. And of cause lots of pandas

So disappointing! We went into the panda reserve close to opening time, but we were told that the pandas’ area is cleaned between 8:30 and 11 AM, and the pandas wouldn’t be coming out until after that time. We weren’t going to sit around and wait for two hours! We saw just one juvenile panda sleeping in a tree.

Was afraid it might be like a zoo but beautifully done. Very natural settings outside. Plenty of places for pandas to climb trees, hollow trees etc to mimic in wild to get out of heat & away from tourists. Don’t need guide as all translated!

I travelled to the reserve from Chengdu via a bus to Yaan, I'm a solo traveller but had the help of a translator at my place of work ('m currently volunteering in Sichuan) to book my bus ticket, I was still required to print my ticket at the station which involved some guess work with the all Chinese ticket machines, but I figured it out. The bus ride was easy enough as I was on a direct bus to Yaan, but bear in mind that there are many bus options which have many stops, at nearly 2hours direct, I would avoid any other option. On arrival at Yaan I then had to figure out the 'tourist bus' to get to the reserve, as I've been in China for a month it was easy to figure out that this tourist bus is actually a minivan, 6yuan and 25min ride got me to the reserve ticket office.

Once at the ticket office you have two options to get to the reserve itself, one is to take the 50 storey elevator down to the valley floor and take a really pretty 7km walk to the entrance, second option is to take a bus 3km to the entrance. I personally was really looking forward to the valley walk and it paid off, there were barely any people, especially for China standards and it was really quite pretty down there. There are obviously some steps, but nothing overly challenging.

Once in the reserve the place is quite spread out, but if you don't want to walk the whole thing there is a shuttle for an extra fee that will take you around. I was lucky enough to be there just before feeding, when I guess the pandas know that it's nearly food time and so were awake and wrestling, and I also got to see them be fed :)

Once finished I continued my weekend trip by taking a bus to Leshan to see the Giant Buddha the following day...

I’ve had a love for Panda’s since I was a babe. I’ve countless cuddly panda’s, sponsored pandas for years via WWF and dragged my sons to Vienna zoo twice to see pandas live.
When I found out about volunteering at the centre I jumped at the chance and it was beyond my wildest dreams. Everyone I met from the tour company, my fellow volunteers, staff at the reserve and people in Chengdu and Ya’an were a delight and so kind and polite. To get within inches of living pandas almost bought me to tears. I can’t wait to go back and see my friends and the pandas again maybe even one of my sons will come.
