As a language enthusiast, this was one of my coolest museum experiences ever. The rooms are arranged in chronological sequence, so you can start with the relics of the Oracle Bones from the Shang era, then proceed through all of the subsequent dynasties and watch the characters evolve up to the present day right before your very eyes! The building was pretty dazzling too, it seemed very new and had a cool modern architecture. I hope this place puts Anyang on the map more than it already is, because it is actually one of the seven Chinese capitals that fewer people seem to know about, and it is definitely worth checking out!

This is an interesting museum, since Yinxu is an archeological site wth the earliest written records on oracle bones, Anyang is nicknamed the home of oracle scripts. Here in the museum, you will see how the chinese character developed and evolve from the early pictogram into different characters and fonts we are using today. You will see the earliest written characters were carved onto the Bronze vessels and bamboo strips, and all the way to the print method began to take shape in China.
There is a section for the languages used along the ancient Silk Road too, some of this may have extinct, some still carry on till today, some has evolved and merged into other language. I personally think the museum is very well curated.

We went on a Sunday and it was free entrance not sure about other days. Just bring your ID or Passports. It's very common buying tickets in China needs an ID or Passport. The museum has a lot of information about Chinese characters and the history behind it dated back as far as 5000-3000BC (unbelievable! That long ago!!) some artifacts too and about paper making and printing is also included there.

I visited the Chinese Character Museum (中国文字博物馆) in March this year.
The building itself looks very new and the exhibitions are very professional, especially for Anyang which isn't exactly known as a destination city for tourists. The icing on the cake is that the English signage is excellent.
If you have an interest in history, language etc you will really appreciate a visit to this museum.
Please also note that entry is free (or at least it was when I visited), however I did need to show some ID to get in.

Absolutely loved this place learning about the evolution of Chinese characters which are still in existence today. I spend 2 hours at this museum reading and learning. Well laid out, some real scapula bones with writing, and some reproduced. Worth the visit.

The title "Anyang Museum" is incorrect. It should be the National Museum of Chinese Writing (or Chinese Characters). The museum is unique. Anyang is the logical place for it because it was here over a century ago that the "oracle bones" were discovered which proved that China had a fully-developed system of writing (some 5000 characters) over 3400 years ago. This museum displays some of the ox scapula and tortoise plastrons on which the ancient Shang Kings asked for guidance from Heaven or their ancestors. Besides the bones, there are some superb Zhou bronze ritual vessels which fill in much of the gaps in the absence of written histories. A diorama of a Shang foundry shows how these vessels were made. There are Neolithic pottery shards which show perhaps the oldest characters known in China, and inscribed stone. Ancient coins were cast with Chinese characters, and of course much of the early writing was done on silk or linen, or bamboo and wood slips, most of which have long since decomposed, but a few of which have been preserved and are displayed in the museum. There are exhibits of many scripts of the minority peoples of China and its neighbors. The museum is very well done with helpful labels and many illustrations (in English), but admittedly it is a specialty museum, and probably not one that will enthrall the kids. Also the lighting is not all that good, so good photos are difficult to take. As with all my museum reviews, I have thoroughly photographed this museum and placed the pictures on my GaryLeeTodd.com website where I make them freely available to any interested person. There are many things of great historical interest to see in Anyang, and this one is definitely a good way to spend a couple of hours. Also, look for special exhibits. In one of my earlier visits they had a special exhibit of artifacts from Inner Mongolia.

We managed to arrive at the museum on National Museum Day (May 18). Outside we saw a calligraphy contest, while inside there were dances, songs and music, to augment the truly interesting exhibits of the development of Chinese writing.
The museum provides volunteer English-speaking guides. We were quite lucky to get the former head of a Language department of a local university to lead us around.
Most exhibits have good, but sparse, English captions, for the oracle bones to more modern Chinese characters.
I'd recommend going to this museum in conjunction with a visit to the Yin Ruins where there are also exhibits on early Chinese characters.

Ola. Sou pesquisador.
