Explore this 14th century courtyard castle in Doune, with a striking 100 ft high gatehouse and one of the best preserved great halls in Scotland. The formidable Doune Castle was built for the Regent Albany. The striking keep-gatehouse combines domestic quarters including the splendid Lord's Hall with its carved oak screen, musicians' gallery and double fireplace. This was used as a film location for the BBC production of Ivanhoe and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. As well as being heavily featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Doune Castle was also used for the castle known as Winterfell in the pilot of the award winning TV series Game of Thrones as well as Castle Leoch in Outlander.

Good spot for an hour or two. Reasonably priced, which included the audio guide which is a must. Narrated by Terry Gilliam and the guy from Outlander. Very bare bones castle, in somewhat of a transitionary stage of restoration, it is well worth a visit....More

Visited here with my husband, we are English Heritage members, so could get in for free. We bought the guide book, which has recently been updated, and we also used the free audio guide which was excellent. We found the actual signage was not clear,...More

We visited here as some of the group had seen it on Outlander. The younger ones, 10, 12 & 13 enjoyed exploring and several enjoyed dressing up as Outlander characters. A great contrast to Stirling Castle too. Good audio guide available and this helped bring...More

Ok, I'll admit it -- I'm not a big fan of Monty Python or Outlander. Hard to believe, I know but it is what it is. Both series have "doune" to Doune Castle what the DaVinci Code did to (or for) Roslyn Chapel, namely put...More

Great audio tour with Terry Jones narrating. "I'm French! Why you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly King?"

If you are a Monty Python fan, an Outlander fan, or a Game of Thrones fan you must see this. Aside from its own history, all three have filmed there. The best part about this castle is that it is pretty much untouched. Be sure...More

Where else can you hear a tour narrated by Terry Jones of Monty Python AND Sam Heughan (Outlander)? The audio tour brought a to life the castle's history.

Maybe it was just because we arrived late in the afternoon and we felt like we received added attention; maybe it was the free audio guide; perhaps it was the connection to Monty Python; but we thoroughly enjoyed this castle. The guide was informative; the...More

Lovely castle. Fun to see where the Outlander series was filmed. There was a crew there setting up for future filming.

Nothing at the Castle, but, as noted by previous reviewers, there are options in the village - not a very long walk from the Castle. Buttercup cafe had lovely cakes!! We walked there by following a trail from the parking... More

2 hours or so (at least). The audio tour is very good and at times it's very funny as well.
