Above the center of today's Cidade Velha village are the ruins of the old cathedral. Coming from the simple houses of the Rua Banana one is surprised by the gigantic walls still standing. The whole site is somewhat incongruous with the rest of the place.

No surprise this megalomaniac construction, which took over 100 years to be built, stands now in ruins. Apparently this building was not even destroyed in a single pirate attack, but slowly fell apart, especially when Cidade Velha was given up as the island's main town in favor of Praia.

One can discern that the stone used for the walls is of volcanic, thus local origin, while the frames of gates and windows are of limestone, which does not exist here and thus must have been brought from Portugal most probably.

There is an information board nearby, also in English. The site is not fenced in and is used as a playground for local children. Quite good are the views from the terrace at the cathedral towards the village center.

This is the project that defied all odds and got built. A grandiose catholic cathedral, the first built in Africa. It was controversial because it was not built at the center of the old capital, but slightly about and outside the center. Currently, all that remains are some of the wall and the interior doubles as a small soccer pitch for local kids.

these are the ruines of the first cathedral built in africa (as we have been told)
the size is abnormally huge compared to the number of inhabitants in that village in those days.
bit ridiculous

These are situated on the hill coming up the road out of Cidade Velha. The ruins consist mainly of walls and you can wander around at your leisure.

Although the cathedral is in ruins, there remain a number of tall walls and if you look closely you'll see some original tile and brick work. There's also original tombstones. This is the first cathedral built on the West African coast; construction began in 1556 and was completed in 1700. The area is fairly well maintained, but like most sights in Cape Verde did have litter and trash strewn about. I wouldn't go all the way to Cidade Velha just to see this cathedral, but if you're here seeing other sights, then definitely do stop at the cathedral ruins.

This is a great example of a neat place that needs a tour guide. One of the local youth could cover it and make a euro or two per visitor. It's strewn with trash, wandering animals, but could be really nice.

Walk around the ruins - the cathedral must have been impressive for the time it was built.

You do not really need a guide for it: there is a board in it which tells the history of the cathedral.

The cathedral itself is little more than ruins which are falling apart (or being taken apart) more and more each day. But the first cathedral in West Africa and the first Colonial Cathedral anywhere is worth visiting just to get a sense of the age of exploration. This huge building dominates Cidade Velha and affords a very lovely view of the beach below.

Located at the top of the village, it is possible to enter its well-displayed and restored ruins (Cape Verdean style). we can go around and wander around inside, of course if the gates are open (during the day).

It took years and years to be built due to location disputes, soon after being abandoned, it only took 12 years to fall into ruins, many of the stones from its walls were removed by the locals to build their homes.
A serious problem as they were "forced to return the stones, a UNESCO heritage site
