The fortress towers high above the city. The path is steep but not too long and can easily be done on foot. Once at the top, visitors will find a visitor center where they can buy tickets and watch a short film in various languages. Tickets cost 500 escudos and also entitle to visit the convent as well. The fortress itself is worth seeing, but the best thing is undoubtedly the view over the city.

Very interesting tour of the 16th Century fort built after Sir Francis Drake stormed the bastions a few years before. The information office's representative showed us around after a short video was shown. The resident kitten was a hit. Great views of the old town below. Historically significant and a must for anyone visiting Santiago.

Access is easy by car, a few hundred meters from the main road. The walls of fort itself are well preserved and imposing on the top of the hill.

Views to the city and bay are beautiful. It was however closed on a time when it should have been open!

Visit this site is like a jump in the history and it helps to better understand the culture of Cabo Verde.
Slavery is a big slice of this country past along with the fights against pirates and others Europeans country fleets.
A stop is recommended even though the place cold be in a better state, with more panels for example.
The views are stunning for photos lovers.

The fortress is on the way to Cidade Velha. The entrance fee is CVE 500 (EUR 5) and you can use the same ticket to visit São Francisco convent afterwards.

The site has a little interpretation museum at the entrance.... good to understand a little bit about this place. The fortress itself is... well, an empty fortress. Just the ones you can visit throughout the Balkans (Skoder, Belgrade, Skopje...)

Views are not really impressive either. The cistern is worth, though. Not a place I would recommend but... what else to do while in Santiago?

While more of a site than a sight today, with just the one information board outside, this is a good place to come to with a guide or having read up on the place. It's a very impressive structure with an intriguing history and offers excellent views over Cidade Velha and the ocean below.

To gain admission (if the gate is locked, which it probably will be), try the smaller building opposite, where a film about the place can be watched. Tickets cost 500$/€5, which is on the more expensive side by Cabo Verde standards, but is about the only source of income there is to help with the fort's upkeep.

Be careful while moving round the fort and over its cobblestones: the surfaces are very uneven and there's not much to hang on to.

it was quite along drive to the Fort from Praia. Been to tons of Forts all over the world and thus this one isn't an outstanding one from that point of view. But don't let that deter you. There are nice views of the valley and ocean from here one can enjoy.
It was built by Spaniards in 1590 and is a UNESCO world heritage sight.
The fort was built in the context of the Philippine dynasty , after the attacks of the English corsair Francis Drake in 1578 and on November 17 , 1585, with the mission of defending the city and its anchorage.
In 1712 he was assaulted by French pirates and rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century .
On sight you can see old cannons, 'holes' were prisoners were kept and an interesting cupula water storage building.
