We drove out to the site from Tbilisi in a 4x4 hire car, which was very helpful on some very bad bits of road (mainly after you take the turn off from Sagarejo - note however that this is the best way to get there - google maps tries to take you a much worse route through

When we visited here, the border was closed and we saw some Georgian soldiers watching the border. The atmosphere was not tense as those soldiers were doing smart phones. You can visit only one ruined monastery. So it’s totally up to you to visit here by spending more than an hr
