Walking across Palace Square on the way to the Hermitage and you are wowed by everything around you. The buildings are on a colossal scale and designed to show the Imperial power of Russia. No wonder it's a world heritage site.

Amazing view of the Winter Palace and good to visit in the daytime. However, for the best experience I would recommend to also visit after dark as the illumination adds another dimension to the scene.

The perfect place to begin your St. Petersburg adventure, this square is loaded with history and a dazzling display of grandeur. There's lots to see right from the center by the Aleksandrovskaya Kolonna, and a wonderful story about how it was built. Look it up!
