One of the places i love in Sapporo is the Otaru Canal. The place is simply serene. The weather was perfect at the time we were there. Quiet town. Lots of interesting shops on the side. Worth going. An hours drive from Sapporo.
While some of my friends find the ‘smell’ from the canal noticeable, I found it alright, and I think that the view from the opposite end of the canal (instead of the side just outside the tourist information office) much better and less crowded
It is about one hour away from Sapporo station. There are lots of nice quaint little shops to see and go to like the music box, the glass shops. We also visited the stained glass museum which displayed beautiful stain glass panels of saints and...More
Lots of restaurants at various price points from full service to counter along the canal. There were gondolas, shops & lots of sights along the canal. Pretty amazing how they converted old warehouses into so many colorful contemporary uses.
Was excited to visit the canal but it was very short and not much to look at. Can’t imagine why you would want to take a boat trip on it. Very tourist orientated with bus loads of people everywhere. Overall a let down.

If the rapid trains are running, the JR train from Sapporo to Otaru is only about 30minutes, hence plenty of time for day trip. However, if traveling during the winter season, please check train schedules as there were bad delays during heavy snow (took us over 2 hours one day).
The walk from the train station to Otaru Canal would be about 10-15mins at adults pace.
My view would be a day trip with Sapporo as base would be more than sufficient. Have fun!
