This is a little out of the way, but is one of the oldest monasteries anywhere. The statuary is superb and you just might be the only westerners there. It felt really special to us!

Needs entrance ticket and the visit is more enjoyable with a guide. There are several monastery buildings to see the paintings. Photography is not allowed inside. Needs more care to preserve the amazing colours in the monastery.

5 temples with beautiful paintings but atmosphere damaged by too many tourists and stalls for selling everything connected. In any case the best in the valley.

Alchi monastery has the most unique statues we've seen in Ladakh. They are beautifully made and preserved. Not only the statues, but the walls of the temples are must-see. I don't have any pictures to show unfortunately because you're not allowed to take pictures inside.
