The caves are clearly well visited by a lot of chinese visitors and the new visitor centre and entrance demonstrates this. It took a good 25 minutes walk to reach the actual caves/grottoes. You can't take photos inside the buddist caves, but the coloured and painted limestone

We visited these caves as well as the Longmen caves. Both are remarkable although Longmen has a greater “wow” factor. Keep in mind if you do go to Datong that it is a coal city and the air is often polluted.

rather easy to access by bus if you can find a bus terminal in Datong City and incredibly cheap fee. Some grottoes are closed because of works, however it is awesome place and definitely a MUST in Datong. Paths are good if you stay in main route. Taking photos of big Buddhas are
