This used to be the old capital building of Hungary, but it has been bombed and reconstructed and then ruined again; only to be rebuilt! These folks are resilient!

On one of our days touring the city by ourselves we visited the Castle. A great place with a terrific view of Budapest. The whole area around the Castle is lovely.

The walk up the hill is quite gentle so if you are able for a gentle walk would skip the long line for the funicular (however to my knowledge the walk is not wheelchair or pram accessible). The 'long' walk (not the signposted short way)...More

Fantastic visit, so much to see, make sure your camera is fully charged. We spent the whole day wandering around, the sights are amazing - such great views across the Danube and of the parliament building.

You can do both, take the guided tour which is very informative, then stroll around by yourselves. Doing it yourselves is easy as everything is easily marked and explained, and it is well worth a visit.
