We stayed in Meknes, a bit smaller city than Fes, and really enjoyed it. From there we visited Volubilis and Moulay Idriss (the holiest of cities in Morocco). We thoroughly enjoyed Volubilis while MI was just okay. It was amazing to just be able to...More

Located north of Meknes, Volubilis is a well-preserved Roman ruin dating from around 25 BC. The city was abandoned in the 14th century and the site was devastated by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. That said, the ruins are well-preserved and somewhat reconstructed in places, and...More

I’ve never experienced anything like this before. We hired a local guide and explored the ruins for a few hours. I was most impressed by the ancient mosaics, amazingly preserved. It was not crowded at all, we nearly had the place to ourselves.

I recall the walk was about 10 minutes uphill. You can definitely do it on your own without a guide. But make sure you have a site map and a list of all the highlights that you must see. Like the mosaics for example.

You'll park in the parking lot that's located next to the gift shop and entry way. You'll walk down a stairway and the museum is right there. You'll be approached by a local guide (the one who brought you there is not... More
