A less popular track compared to the Routeburn well and truly worth it! The views were incredible! Part of the track was flooded when I tramped it so parts were like walking through a swamp but was definitely an experience that I will not forget....More

Well worth doing. Amazing views and great huts well spaced apart. Track well maintained . We took 4 days and 3 nights which gave plenty of time to stop and admire the scenery. Too beautiful to rush.

do 31km of the track in one day. A group of us set out on a beautiful November day with a view to do a four day trek in three. Big mistake. A redeeming feature was the weather, we were lucky. Take plenty of gas...More

Walked up the Caples and down the Greenstone. This was an amazing walk with beautiful scenery; rivers, mountains, bush, valleys, tussock, and wildlife. Particularly exciting was the deer we saw at the Greenstone hut and on the track when we were walking out. It was...More

The Greenstone Caples track was fantastic. We completed the loop anticlockwise, making a big day of it first up with 31kms from car park to the McKeller Hut. It took us about 10 hours and I would say I walk at an average speed. Track...More

I did the Greenstone track starting at Lake Wakatipu end. There was snow down to the tree line and constant rain. Good shelter at the start and information boards useful. Generally though there could have been many more route markers along the entire route, especially...More

Walked the Caples after the Routeburn walking south from Howden Hut. Well graded track up to McKellar Saddle and a spectacular alpine meadow with small lakes and views in two directions. The track down to Mid Caples Hut was well graded and mostly through the...More

The Greenstone/Caples track is a beautiful circuit that can be conveniently completed over 4 days/3 nights. The circuit can be done in either direction. The DOC huts are excellent and a very reasonable $15/person per night. The scenery is spectacular. Highly recommended for those who...More

We had planned to do the caples then onto the Routeburn track, but due to weather on the routeburn we did the loop track around the greenstone track - and we loved it! The track is interesting, with different terrain from wide open valley fields,...More
