If you want the views don’t bother with Monte. Take a bus or (as we did) a hire car. If by car, park at the top entrance by the cable car station. Ignore the sign that says Private Parking, the parking is for the cable...More

Enjoyed it very much but because we went in October there was not so many flowers out so probably best to go in the spring or summer.

If you have plenty of time, then visit it but if your time is limited I think this can be skipped. Maybe because we went in October but for us was just an usual botanic garden.

Had a lovely morning in the gardens. Shame we wasn’t given a tour pamphlet to go with the booking or at the gate. Tour not suitable for infirm as very uneven surfaces. Did see some lovely plants but didn’t enjoy as much as the other...More

If you have to make a choice choose the Palace Gardens. The boranical are good but not a patch of the Palace. Plenty of plants but would need either a good knowledge of botany or a guide to get the most out of it.

If you would like an adventure take the local bus up to the Botanical Gardens. The bus drivers deserve medals for manoeuvring their buses up these narrow winding streets. Gardens are lovely. Cafe has a fantastic choice of snacks and sandwiches. You can have lunch...More

Enjoyable cable car ride to gardens but distinctly unimpressed by gardens on arrival. Better floral displays at this time of year in most UK parks. A friend who has some breathing and mobility problems couldn’t begin to tackle the steep and sometimes treacherous paths in...More

It was a great place to visit with scenic spots for photos that overlook the southern side of Madeira. There is also ample street parking on adjacent streets if arriving by car rather than using the cable car from Monte. Note that the map cost...More

So many varieties of trees, shrubs and plants, it really was a pleasure to spend time there. And the museum near the entrance is not to be missed. Full of coral, birds, and sea creatures like we'd never seen before.

This in itself is a great place to wander and look at the plants. If you add to that its location, on the hillside hight above Funchal then the views are stunning too. There is a further advantage, that you can get there by two...More

Yes. We got a taxi back to town, offered us the same price as the bus. There were many taxis waiting just outside the Gardens.
