An easy to walk Trail which takes ca. 2,5 hours. We recommend to first walk clockwise around the caldeira as you can just have to get up to the antennas first and then can enjoy the walk downwards without too many height-meters.

Hi, We returned few weeks ago from the amazing trip in the Azores. We did not rent a car in Faial, so we took a taxi to the Caldeira with a great driver named Filipe Marques (962-794-220). He is a skilled and friendly driver, and...More

If you happen to be lucky enough to be in Faial on a sunny, cloudless day and enjoy hiking, then you should definitely head up this volcano and walk around the 8km-long rim of its caldera (the trail is clearly marked). The views along the...More

We visited the Caldeira with a tour party. However, it was a very cloudy day and the view down was rather spasmodic and I am sure the visit would have been far better on a clearer day. It was still amazing despite this.

Driving up in the clouds. we were surprised to walk through a small tunnel to view the crator in a totally clear light. The clouds hovered just above but the view downwards was perfect.

One can drive to the start of a short hike up to the top of what was once a very active volcano or you can also take a taxi. Some hikers like to start at the marina and walk the whole way which takes a...More

We were on Faial for two days so we decided to go immediately to see the Caldeira. We got there in the afternoon and ... we couldn’t see a thing. The entire area was covered by a thick and wet fog so we left. We...More

Well worth the drive up - fantastic views of the caldera and Faial - also over to Pico. Walking trails run from the parking lot.

There’s a possibility to hike, we didn’t do it since it was too rainy, but we had 2 minutes if seeing the caldeira without fog and it was great!

I hope you have booked a hotel. Then you can ask your hotel to help you contact a tour agent. Or you can search for one on TripAdvisor. People there are all very kind and helpful and they work well as tour agents. Websites... More

I do not think it will be a big problem for someone with mild vertigo. The view point at the start of the trail is probably as close as you will come to looking down over the edge. Recommend you wear good shoes and bring a... More
