Prepare yourself for a remarkable collection of art. It is arranged by age period so you can travel chronologically, which is something I had not seen before, and it made so many things easier to understand and put in perspective!
Large gallery in central Hamburg very near main train station.
It’s worthwhile hiring an audio guide if you are interested in artist and background of various paintings, however quite tricky to use until you get hang of it.

This has become my favorite museum in Hamburg and one of my favorites in Germany generally. The building is impressive, and the collections include many of the major names in art history but also introduces other fine artists to visitors. The museum is well planned...More

I enjoyed seeing the Hamburg School of painters who went to Copenhagen and abroad to gain experience. The landscapes were stunning, interesting use of light and textures.
The video section was sometimes enjoyable but also provoking feelings of unease.

Walkable distance from Marriott Hotel near Gansemarkt area. Around 20 minutes. From Marriott, walk two short streets down to Grosse Bleichen and stay on Grosse Bleichen all the way towards the lake (Binnenalster). facing the lake, turn right on Jungfernstieg and then turn Left on Ballindam -- the boulevard along the lake there. Walk for around 5 minutes along the lake shore and you get the Lombardsbrucke Bridge. The museum is there nearby, at the corner of Ballindamm and Glockengiesserwall. There are signs to guide like everywhere else in the city to city attractions. It is easy to get around that area. Nearby around five minutes away from the museum is the Central train station.
