I'm a regular visitor to the ancient city. It is very popular with visitors no doubt due to it's listing as a world heritage site 22 years ago by UNESCO.
So I avoid the crowds and instead walk the outer walls which are very enjoyable.
What a place. So, huge, so old, so much history, so impressive a site, etc. Such a lovely atmosphere, and it can take a whole day to over it properly. Entrance into part of it is free and then there are self guided tours into...More
The guide books do not do this place justice. A bit of a climb but worth every step! If you can, do the walking tour from the tourist information office, a really good experience. Yes it is a bit touristy but not really a surprise...More
If in the region then this probably shouldn’t be missed. Can be quite crowded and very tourist-oriented. However, the narrow lanes in the city are great for ambling around and quite atmospheric. Plenty of food outlets as well as the typical tourist souvenir shops. Some...More
Our holiday with Newmarket was based around the city with our apartment at the Cerise being just ten minutes walk from the main entrance to the cold walled city. On our first day was included a guided tour around the city outlining its history. Our...More
I absolutely loved this medieval city within the old walls.
This is a stunning location with some great restaurants and shops containing all sorts of sweets and tourist souvenirs from high end to the more basic souvenirs.
There is the odd tourist trap eating place...More

As we walked towards the fortified city it’s towers and turrets were overwhelming. We had a local guide during our tour. The cobblestone walkways along the walls had some spots for picture taking, but we had to keep walking to hear the guide. There were...More

There is no entry fee for La Cité, the medieval town of Carcassonne. You enter through the main gate and can wander around at your own pace. There are parking areas nearby or bus shuttle services to the train station and airport. It can get very busy. Most cafees, restaurants and shops open around 9.30-10. It is quite nice to explore it before that as there are less people. You can stay in La Cité if you like. There is a luxury hotel and several bed and breakfasts.

It is LEAST busy later in the afternoon and evening. All the busses and the day travelers come in the morning. This place is so amazing that we took photos around town in the day and then went back and repeated them at dusk because it is so stunning to see. Very easy to get around inside the old town.
