About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 957ninav0 contributionsA EVITAR! DON'T GO THERE! THE WORST EXPERIECE I EVER HADThey were absolutely irresponsible. The driver (in the morning) was drunk, we got in a terrible car accident and waited for hours in the middle of nowhere for someone else to come help us. The guide disappeared and we never even got a decent tour. Sumaj never apologized and asked for extra money at the end.Written 24 March 2020
- 957ninav0 contributionsA TRUE NIGHTMARE AND TOTAL FRUSTRATIONIRRESPONSABLES Y PELIGROSOS A terrible and dangerous experience! Sumaj is a bit cheaper than other options but don't put your life at risk to save a bit of money, it truly isn't worth it. Sumaj changed their offer last minute, the guide all of a sudden disappeared but kept on saying she'll show up later. Once in Punta Gallinas, our driver never showed up to pick us up to go back to Uribia, after waiting for about 4 hours in the middle of nowhere a different driver showed up. Once in the car, we noticed he was completely drunk he drove recklessly and didn't slow down when it started raining. As if that wasn't bad enough the windshield wipers didn't work and we ended up having a terrible car accident! The driver lost a wheel (see image below) and it took forever for him to get a hold of someone to come help us. We waited for hours until someone came to look for us. In the end, the rescue driver took us to Cabo de la Vela as it was too late to go anywhere else. The next morning some other driver showed up and took us to Riohacha. Once at Riohacha Sumaj never apologized and told the new driver to ask us for extra money!!! because of the extra driver that came to help us! I live in Bogota and I'm bilingual Spanish/English so the language was not the issue here. I share this because anger aside I truly hope no one has to go through what we went through!Written 24 March 2020
- T B0 contributionsGreat experience!I have been on a two-days-trip with Summaj Feeling from Cabo de la Vela to Punta Gallinas and everything worked out perfectly. The driver was nice, the meals were tasty and the other people were amazing as well.Written 18 January 2020
- EddieBabucke0 contributionsUna experiencia muy privada y muy informativa! We had a great time doing the Tour to Punta Gallinas and Cabo de la Vela. It’s a very interesting place which is totally different then all the rest of Colombia we have seen so far. We ate with Joana, a Wayú woman who was able to answer all the question we asked her about their way of living ect... It was a very close experience that we enjoyed a lot!! Julien who manages the Tours was very happy and passionate about the Tour, he told us a lot in advance which really helped us. If you can take the time you should definitely visit this place, and with Sumajfeeling you will have a very private and informative experience. Gracias por todo!Written 18 January 2020
- jcnt930 contributionsAmazing and beautifulThank you everyone at sumaj feeling. You helped making this an amazing experience, julian miriam lucas and ivan! Nice hostel in Cabo de la Vela and nice tour, and in the evening a Wajuu experience over dinner (goat with arepa), really cool! And the tour to punta gallinas. Everything was organized so nicely and we were happy that we used sumaj feeling to book our tour instead of going on our own! Thank youWritten 26 August 2019

Had the best time with Sumaj on the 2N/3D trip to Punta Gallinas!
Everything just went smoothly and their communication from start to finish was great. The price is extremely fair for what you get - the accommodation was beautiful and clean, food was delicious at every meal and they always give you multiple options (incl. vegetarian) plus a drink.
The girls in the office checked in on us every day to make sure everything was going well and they are very fast at replying to any questions you may have.
Our driver, Angelo, was amazing - so friendly, fun and knowledgeable! We were also able to store our stuff at their office during the tour so we didn’t have to bring it all or pay for a hostel while we were gone.
La Guajira is definitely worth the trip and I would recommend everyone to choose Sumaj Tours as their agency!

Starting my Kitesurfing classes was an exciting experience, with the best equipment and safety measures provided by the NinaKite school. It a great instructor, friendly, practical and dedicated to teaching; fully recommended.
This story will continue... as there are still many classes to take at NinaKite!

Clearly the place and the natural and human discovery of the Guajira desert is to be done.
But the organization of the agency shows its flaws once the commercial part is done.
Long story short:
- lack or no information during the tour, the driver is not a guide, but no information is given at each stop.
- the information was sporadically given to one member of our group, the driver was clearly teasing.
- your packed with 6 peoples in a off-road car that is falling part.
- proposed snacks are quantitatively enough for one day, not 3.
- Boat crossing, for 3 minutes crossing it's 12€/pp. And they don't help you for nothing. We had to help each other to charge our stuff and get in or out the boat. They were 3 just looking at us.
Once I gave all information to the agency, it took them 3 months to reply and to come with a solution (a discount on the next tour !).
Next to this, the indigenous family experience was really fun and nice to experience, and nature in the desert is quiet beautiful. So, YES it's a very nice tour to do, but consider your agency.

La Guajira is worth visiting, pure and wild nature, a place with wonderful corners, with its Wayuu peoples who survive as best they can, forgotten by government authorities throughout history, their resources exploited and mistreated, today they try Get ahead as always.
I do not recommend contracting with Sumaj Tours.
We were aware before booking the tour that it was not going to be a comfortable destination, since there are many hours of driving, intense heat, not very comfortable rancherĂas with questionable cleanliness and repetitive and basic meals.
Before contracting with Sumaj Tours they seemed very serious and organized to us, the reality was quite the opposite.
They took us in a Toyota 4x4 that was not in condition to be used: window glass that went down and then did not go up (luckily solved after 2 hours of driving in intense heat), handbrake that did not work and every time As we were getting off, it leaned back, putting the passengers at risk, the trunk did not open with the appropriate inconvenience (solved on the second day of the trip), the fuel pump was malfunctioning and we came back bouncing and very slowly. The vehicle smelled a lot of gasoline because they were transporting a can in the same cabin where we were traveling, these gases are toxic and it is not the correct or legal way to transport it.
A trip with so many hours of travel, I was not looking for a driver who would simply take me from one place to another to take the photo, but a guide who could really tell us travelers about the place, its people, etc... The Sumaj Tours agency assured me before booking the tour that all its drivers were Baquianos. I'm not going to doubt it, we had one who didn't speak or tell anything interesting. Missed opportunity to get to know this wonderful place better.
At the exit from Riohacha there was a police checkpoint, the driver turned around on the road and exited through another area of Riohacha, this is not normal to do if everything is in order and the vehicle is in order. Apart from the fact that he drove in flip flops, and other times completely barefoot, this is not allowed by Traffic, simply because it is not safe.
It is not possible that Sumaj Tours did not know the condition of your vehicle, and in any case I see that they do not carry out any checks. In this case they knew it in advance from the conversations they overheard with the driver.
Therefore, my recommendation is that you look for another agency for this tour other than Sumaj Tours.
