- wouters8110 contributionsGreat nature experience!!We had a really unique experience with a very relaxed and qualified guide (Carlos). The bioluminescene are hard to catch with your camera, but even more unique to experience with your own eyes. Also the bright stars and milkyway are great to add on your bucketlist! - Tyaminator0 contributionsAmazing experience! We took off from the Holbox beach and kayaked around near the Playa Mosquito area. When we went far enough we were able to see the bioluminiscent plankton when we swirled our hands in the water, one our kayak paddles and even our clothes! Its currently not at full visibility, but its increasing rapidly. I believe we saw it at 65% visibility. Pick a night where there's atleast 3-5 hours between sunset and moonrise so that you can go on this tour at a reasonable hour. The waters around playa mosquito are not very deep, so swimming is very safe. Everyone has to wear a life vest. One thing to note is that the bioluminescent organisms aren't shining clouds of light as they show in the pictures. Its very subtle, and you will enjoy it once your eyes adjust to the darkness. Part of the experience is also to enjoy kayaking in the dark. Our team was great!Written 17 April 2023
- sewardn0 contributionsRefund without issueWe tried to book a bioluminesce tour with Azul Torquesa and they were incredibly helpful throughout the booking process with options and suggestions. Unfortunately due to weather and travel issues we weren’t able to access the island and had to change our trip. They refunded our deposit without an issue and it was nice to know we could trust them with our $$. We were very excited for our tour and will absolutely be coming back to book with them again!Written 2 November 2022

- K2296QDmichaelm0 contributionsIncredible, a must..We did the biolumenescience tour and it was incredible. Before they took us out on the kayaks they did a great job of giving instructions and information in Spanish and English for our small mixed group. We were fortunate that we had perfect conditions, pitch black skies and calm waters. Experiencing this was magical, the way you could stir up the plankton to make a cloud or simply moving your arms in the water created little sparks of blue lights. Swimming in the ocean at night in near black conditions was something you must experience. Would absolutely recommend and we'd do it again.Written 9 September 2022
- X4441WSjenns0 contributionsSuper cool experience!A fantastic experience! Swimming in the bioluminescent water was magical. You can see so many stars and we were lucky enough to witness the full super moon rise. You will be in a 2 person kayak, so if you’ve never kayaked with another person, make sure you know how before you go. The guides were very nice and made sure everyone stayed together. I would suggest bringing some kind of light for the trip as it was hard to see the other kayaks. If you decide to bring your phone make sure it’s in a waterproof case. I would definitely do it again!Written 25 August 2022
- Badbondd0 contributionsMust do! Very safe and enjoyableAmazing tour to see the bioluminescence in much greater detail. Our tour guide was excellent, explains everything in Spanish and English very well. We received lots of background information about the biology of the event. Makes the guests really comfortable too by taking away any worries. The sea is super calm so good for beginners to Kayak in and to enjoy floating around in a life vest during swimming. Don't listen to your mom whose telling you not to go in the sea in the dark, and do this tour!Written 22 August 2022
- knr1670 contributionsDisorganizedIt seemed very disorganized between the person who was “checking us in” and tour guide. You carry your your kayak to the beach and then you go out about 20 feet and splash in the water. It’s a beautiful experience but not what I thought it was going to be.Written 30 July 2022
- Bravhooo0 contributionsTouch the water and get surprised! 🌊It was an astonishing experience, we went with a 2 person kayak into the water. The sky was beautiful with all the stars and the bright moon. The bioluminescence was also visible, you shouldn’t expect a glowing sea but for us it was really worth it. You also get the chance to swim at night and the temperature of the water was really great so that was also fun! The guide was very aware of everyone and trying to help wherever she could.Written 12 June 2022

This is a fantastic agency organizing amazing tours to see the luminescence and mangroves in an ecoway (canoe and swimming). The guides are great particularly Ivan that is very knowledgeable on the mangrove environment and will go out of his way to show you its treasure. Don't miss your opportunity to see the endangered and prehistoric Atlantic horseshoe crab (or at least its shells) that is threatened now by the disapearance of the mangroves due to touristic/urban development but mostly because they are used as bait for octopus fishing. So if you can do one small action to protect it, is to ban octopus from your menu while in Mexico. Carlos the manager will go all his way to accomodate your need and prepare your trip well in advance. You shouldn't miss it.

Holbox Island is a gem - I'm hesitant to review anything related to it, because in ten years it might be full of high-rise developments and tourists. For now, though, it is a fantastic blend of authentic Mexican culture, fantastic dining, and an international set of travelers. Kayaking was a great experience - one of many.

This was a great way to spend a morning. We kayaked up the beach until we reached the mouth of the river, then we kayaked up the river to see birds, crocodiles, and fish. Our host was engaging and enjoyable and had lots of interesting things to say about the area and the ecosystem. There aren’t a lot of things to “do” in Holbox, but this should be at the top of the list.

This was something we had looked forward to before our holiday and saved until the last night. Unfortunately we had a terrible experience.
As seen in a previous review, we simply could not keep up. The tide was high and the conditions were choppy (even though it looked fine from the shore). We trailed behind most of the time and when the guide stopped to wait for us, when we caught up, they began paddling immediately meaning that everyone else was getting a rest except us (we were exhausted).
The paddle to the mangroves was long and hard. We got to the mangroves and saw flamingos, but not much else. Anything we saw wasn’t as effective as we were so exhausted. We stopped for maybe 10 mins twice on the whole trip, and everyone sat in complete silence. The guide said nothing or explained much about anything we were seeing.
The paddle back was intense. As we turned to leave the mangroves, the tide was rushing in meaning the whole journey back was padding against the current, when we were already exhausted. The guide told us we couldn’t stop and it was because if you stopped paddling, you’d be carried back in.
The incredible sunset was the only saving grace.
I’d like to add that we are in our late 20s/early 30s and are not unfit. We also own a kayak at home and have a good amount of sea kayaking experience.
This is not for the faint hearted, be prepared for a long hard slog with little rest. With a little warning or preparation by the guide or company we could’ve prepared much better. If you don’t have a high level of fitness avoid at all costs.

Unfortunately, we had to abort the tour as we were unable to keep up with the guide and the two other pairs who were also on the tour.
We didn't have any previous kayak experience and were given no instruction whatsoever - just given a paddle and told to get in the boat.
The tide was high, the conditions in the sea were rough and so we kept losing touch.
The group would eventually stop and allow us to catch up before immediately heading off again, meaning they had a chance to rest but we didn't.
We explained to the guide that we weren't having fun. We said we would like to stop the tour as we lacked the experience and technique to keep up with the group and didn't want to slow everyone down.
We didn't even reach the mangroves! I'm sure this is a great experience for many, and I feel with a bit of instruction we may have been able to enjoy it too.
My advise to anyone who isn't confident in their kayaking ability - keep an eye on the conditions, whether the tide is high or low and most of all make sure you are given some pointers before heading in. We assumed we would and so regret not saying anything beforehand.

We purchased the kayaking mangrove tour and they asked for the money upfront. The next morning they supposedly came to pick us up at our hotel but we thought they were coming at 7 but they came at 6:45. When we called them they said they already came and its too bad we missed out tour! We already paid 1200pesos upfront and they didnt even give us the option for money back, different tour choice or anything. They took our money but no tour!! We were really upset with the service and that we lost our money and tour!

Issa was amazing! What a gorgeous tour through the Mangroves, and a very knowledgeable host. We saw flemingos and other birds, and even got lucky with an alligator.
Issa was very thoughtful, very tranquil, and educated us on the area and it’s preservation. She is a great steward of the land and waters.
Would highly recommend!

We booked the sunrise your on our last day in Holbox and accidentally overslept. Fortunately, the staff who picked us up at our hotel were willing to wait a few minutes. We are so glad they did because the tour was magical! Our guide was very passionate about the local ecology and we felt as though we got a truly insider experience. We were lucky to see crocodiles, puffer fish, and many amazing bird species. We would highly recommend this tour!

Amazing sunrise kayak tour of mangroves! Omar and Gustavo were brilliant guides with good knowledge of the flora and fauna and a knack for finding flamingos and crocodiles!
Holbox is being developed fast and this was a welcome focus on its extraordinary nature as we paddled silently through the mangroves listening to bird calls and other animal sounds.
Kayaking was not strenuous but we had perfect conditions, are fit and have kayaked before.

The kayak trip with Dali was an unforgettable moment. Even though the weather conditions were not favorable, Dali took us to the mangrove with many pieces of information. He allowed us to go and meet the crocodiles. Then a stop on a magnificent lagoon. An original experience is this crossing in the mangrove, a suspended time. We highly recommend Dali for his kindness, his attentiveness and his skills!
