- Cgregoire20800 contributionsMunching and chuckling our way through ProvidenceMy experience bringing my office out on a Food Tour of Providence was fantastic! My staff had a blast being led by Michelle who explained the history and culture of RI in a humorous, lighthearted way. The 6 restaurants she brought us to served up high quality, creatively prepared dishes which were one yummier than the next. This jaunt certainly made me proud to call RI home !Written 16 December 2024

- Travel189807072380 contributionsDeliciously fun tour!!!!Took this tour with my husband, as a birthday gift for him. Winter time and cold for a walking tour but that didn’t diminish the experience at all. We’re local to the area, but love checking out new local restaurants and culturally diverse food. Our tour guide Jenny was amazing, funny, informative and her love of RI and providence shows in her wealth of knowledge regarding the city’s past history and present fun facts and hot spots . Well worth the money, food portions were large and filling, way more than just sample bits, lots of laughs, no matter what season I think well-worth-it tour to try!!!!Written 12 December 2024

- Margaret G0 contributionsGreat Providence TourWe spent the day with Jenny and two other couples and a young adult. Jenny was great, full of lots of great information about Providence. She was very energetic and animated and made it fun for all of us. She started by telling us her goals for the day eat, learn, and fun (elf). She succeeded in all three. We made 6 stops Plant Based Food, Charuma, Cielito Mexican, Ellie’s, The Malted Barley and Providence Noodle Bar. They were all great. I would recommend this to anyone.Written 23 November 2024

- GS6440 contributionsTwins Nostalgic 60th Birthdays back in RIWe had a really great time a couple of weekends ago with our food tour. Jack was our guide and he did a fantastic time-very engaging and full of knowledge about Providence/RI and what a foodie! There was a nice selection of treats to try and it was well balanced between savory/sweet. It was a lot of food and we were very full at the end. There was one place that we could have skipped but in all, the food was really delicious. As my brother and I were celebrating our 60th birthdays (twins), some places graciously offered us a sweet treat as well. Jack was a wealth of knowledge and gave us such good recommendations for the rest of our trip. We ended up going to one of his suggested places twice on our trip and it was a highlight of the trip. We also went back to one of the places on the tour that had delicious pastries. In all, a very fun way to spend an afternoon, eating good food with good company.Written 12 November 2024

We had a fabulous experience with Jack during this food tour- when we travel we always book tours….food, history, ghosts….you name it ! We would always say the tour guide can definitely make or break the experience so I wanted to specifically point out that our tour guide, Jack, was genuinely personable, funny, down to earth and just a great time to tour with!! The places we visited were all unique, off the beaten path and delicious with generous servings. Jack was great in offering historic tid bits and general local recommendations along the way (we stopped back into the Vanderbilt for a drink and a gorgeous rooftop view before dinner as he suggested), he also super accommodating when it can to any special dietary needs and continuously asked for our feedback- I would 110% recommend this tour to anyone, worth ever penny!

This is a review of the Newport Neighborhood option. We were looking for something different to do on a forecasted cloudy Sunday in June, our group of 4 booked the Newport neighborhood version of Rhode Island Red Food Tours. We booked a few days in advance.
Our guide was Elise who was instrumental in making our afternoon fun, unique and informative . Elise loves Newport and it shows.
We've visited Newport often but always to the touristy "downtown". Today we were introduced to the "real" Newport downtown and along the way enjoyed some awesome small plates in unique local settings.
It was unanimous among our group of 4 that the nitro coffee and delicious Caprese toast from Nitro Bar was our favorite .
We did enjoy each of the 6 unique small businesses that we visited.
We were a small group as opposed to the typical tour size of 14 and we felt honored to have what seemed like a private tour . Elise kept the flow moving with fun facts, historical trivia and the infusion of her love for Newport.
Since we toured on a Sunday, the restaurant lineup is different than the other for days. I'd love to return for another tour to try two of the establishments other reviewers have noted as awesome : Perro Salado and Yagi Noodles.
This food tour is a great way to see unique, less traveled parts of Newport while enjoying some yummy small plates and learning some jeopardy worthy facts along the way!

Our group of 12 attended the Newport tour on July 17. We had an amazing time. Several of us are from Rhode Island and were very impressed with the food stops- we had never been to any of them, and loved all of them. It was such a great way to be introduced to some Newport “gems”. Our guide Sarah was very informative and had great tips about the area, both with food and history. We loved the tour, the food we ate at each of the 6 stops was well worth the price and overall this was an awesome outing for our group. We’re already looking to try the Providence version!

The tour started out well with a visit to a coffee shop. We were served a small sample of their coffee which is brewed for 24 hours, and a half of a breakfast burrito with egg, chorizo, cheese and beans. Then we went to a small grocery store, which served us a taco. The taco had a great taste, but was very small, about 3 - 4 inches in diameter. Next stop was a place for Jamaican jerk chicken. Again, 2 - 3 bits was served. The alcohol was about a 4 oz cup of red striped beer, made in Jamaica and available in most states. Nothing special to Newport. There are local breweries.Next stop was a Mexican restaurant, which served us chips and guacamole. Margarita was ok. Again, nothing special to Newport. We can get chips and salsa anywhere,. The 4th stop was for a smoothie served in about a 2 oz cup, 2 gulps worth. Last stop was for 2 cookies and sampling of wine, which was choice of an Argentina melbac or California chardonnay. No local wine served. While the tour guide was very entertaining and knowledgeable, being the concierge at a local historical hotel, the food was not worth the $64.00, and with drinks, $84.00. The website says come hungry. You will be eating afterwards. Being Newport, we didn't sample any seafood. We had 3 similar ethnic samples and 2 dessert type items, smoothie and cookies. The tour should try promote local restaurants, but also promote why visitors are attracted to Newport, famous seaport. This would help with tourism. Change up the menu!

Hi Kathy,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review but I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the tastings.
We do bill the tour as an off-the beaten-path neighborhood tasting tour where the locals go, enough food in its entirety for a comfortable lunch. The restaurant locations are all locally owned businesses and show a more diverse side of Newport that tourists don't really know to go. Although seafood is very much a part of food you will find in the more touristy sections of Newport in the neighborhood we take the tours through there is far less of that, we chose to take you to a couple of ethnically owned restaurants, one was a Central American style bodega with traditional street food, another was Jamaican which btw is why you were served the Jamaican beer.
Unfortunately, the one day you were on the tour one of the most popular stops had an oven breakdown so all they were able to serve was chips and salsa which is not our usual tasting served with a margarita, so I apologize for that but the margaritas there are very popular.
Also, a couple of the tastings you mentioned have actually changed since you took the tour for various reasons, some of which is supply related.
All in all, our hope is that you see, learn and taste a different side of Newport and find it an enjoyable afternoon meeting and tasting different foods with new people.
Thank you for taking our tour.

I rated this tour a 2 but would rate the food as a 5. The food was amazing! However, our tour guide Morgan was a different story. In the beginning she seemed friendly and was extremely energetic. By the third stop she had basically latched on to a group within our tour group that had younger guys and girls. My husband and I sat at a table and she sat at our table and looked over at the table with the younger guys and said can I join you you guys you are way more fun. The others at the table looked at us like they couldn’t believe what she had just said and quite honestly we were a bit floored. She hardly spoke to others and talked a bit much about her personal life. Sorry we were into talking more about the tour and food and city history and not being fun. We will try a different tour company next time for sure.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention although I wish you could have contacted me directly and I certainly would have tried to make this right by you.
I'm sorry you had this isolated incident happen to you, it certainly is not indicative of who we are as a company nor has this ever been an issue in the past as evidenced in the hundreds of reviews here.
Knowing the guide the way I do, I can only say that it was probably thoughtlessly said in jest, but nonetheless not acceptable. We want all our guests to be comfortable and feel appreciated at all times and I will ensure this does not happen again.
My sincerest apologies, I hope you will reconsider giving us another try in the future.

The selection of restaurants was nice and showcased several smaller restaurants with unique offerings. We enjoyed hearing some history as we walked between restaurants; however, our tour guide was very theatrical and called more attention to herself rather than using the time to highlight the town.
We would have found the tour much more enjoyable with a more subdued and informative tour guide.

Thank you for taking our tour and leaving a review.
We are happy to hear you enjoyed the food, restaurants and history shared with you on our tour by our guide, so overall I would say it we achieved what we set out to do.
Regarding our Covid Policy, which is on our website and is sent to each ticket purchaser in their confirmation. Essentially it is that we are requiring everyone to wear a mask inside every restaurant unless eating. This is not necessarily the restaurants policy or is it our state requirements, so we do not ask our guides to police it throughout the day, we are not in the business to be confrontational.
We ask that everyone respect our decision to mask up inside for the health and safety of all our guests and restaurant partners. Our guides should be addressing this at the onset of the tour and I will reinforce this with them going forward. Ultimately, we want our guests to feel safe and comfortable through the course of our day together and if anyone chooses to wear a mask outside or wishes to sit at a separate table if they let us know we always do our best to accommodate them and their various comfort levels.
Our guides are an important part of our tours and we recognize that everyone has different expectations from them, but I must say 99% of our guests seem to enjoy someone that is entertaining. In this case our guide happens to be someone that does act professionally in theatre. At the end of the day, everyone is unique and we welcome diverse personalities as our guides and guests.
Though many of our guests find they make a nice new connection to the city with our guides who shares many hidden gems and things they should do while visiting, it may not be realistic for everyone to completely gel, as they say "C est la vie" such is life.
Thank you again for taking our tour!

This walking tour of a section of downtown Newport, which included stops at six eateries, was a delightful way to spend a sunny Friday afternoon. Morgan, our tour guide, was professional, knowledgeable, and lively. She kept us entertained and well taken care of.
Unlike some walking tours where we have walked almost continuously for three hours, the Newport Neighborhood Food Tour stopped every so often to introduce us to the Newport food scene with its tasty bites and drink samplings (note: alcohol is optional). At the end of the tour, having visited 6 eateries, we didn’t feel tired or hungry as we had visited some unique food emporiums, each with their own unique reason to return.
We highly recommend the Newport Neighborhood Food Tour, from Rhode Island Red Food Tours, to both tourists and locals alike. And as locals, we have been introduced to new places. We are already planning to go back to “Nitro” for their Cowboy Cookies and to the “Perro Salado” (Salty Dog) for their Sticky Pork Ribs.

The Neighborhood Food Tour in Newport was fun and diverse, with a natural flow between neighborhood eateries surrounded by fascinating history. Elise has a gift for making everyone in the group feel welcomed and kept the tour moving at a comfortable pace. Her enthusiasm for both the restaurant backgrounds and local history radiated in her expressive narration. I loved learning about the White Horse Tavern and George Washington's time spent in Newport. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in local fare and lore!

Who would think you could have so much fun in the pouring rain? You can’t pick the weather, but I was happy I booked this tour. Morgan made it so enjoyable. Her little quips while walking the neighborhood and her knowledge of every stop we made, made everyone feel welcome. She even sang us a song. She had us all laughing and smiling all day. I highly recommend this tour and would absolutely do it again. Book the alcohol…the Blood Orange Margarita was to die for! 😍

The perfect way to see Newport and taste the foods of the neighborhood. Jack was our guide and he was absolutely amazing. His sense of humor and knowledge of each restaurant and neighborhood history was not only fun but informative. All of the restaurants were hidden gems, each with their own speciality and flair. We had a fun group of people that joined my husband and myself, which made for a fun afternoon. This food tour is a must if you're in the Newport area.

The smoothie place was vegan, I believe. And there was a chowder, if you count that as seafood. But you pretty much need to be open to trying anything if you go, because you don’t get to choose the food offerings. It’s a great tour!

Our tour did include one place with fried calamari, and a great IPA. I made the tour aware of my food allergy when I registered, and every stop knew of it and made sure nothing I sampled contained it. Again, a great tour/activity.
