- StuartCsept0 contributionsExceeded expectationsI had my family in town for a weekend visit and was looking for something fun to do. The crew were knowledgeable, competant and pleasant to talk to. The Fame was comfortable and in excellent sailing condition. We really enjoyed the sights, the history and the cocktails. The cost was very reasonable for the amount of time we sailed and the level enjoyment we experienced. My family was thrilled and we will likely do it again. Stuart C.Written 26 September 2023

Great from start to finish! Whether you are a maritime history fan or are just looking for a nice cruise, this is the one for you. Fantastic and entertaining crew provided lots of history and stories about Salem harbor and life on the seas in the early 1800s. Very kid-friendly, the young ones can help hoist the sails, learn knot tying and experience a demonstration shot of the swivel gun. Drinks and snacks available onboard. A great experience for the price.

This was a wonderful experience! The most obvious parts to rave about were the beautiful boat, the fantastic weather, and the wonderful views we experienced on the day we went. But the super-friendly and informative crew made this a trip to remember. Our family group included all ages from active seniors to young kids and the crew made everyone feel special. I was impressed by how they allowed the guests to get involved but also made the rounds to chat with all of the passengers on the boat. The short historical perspective given on our way back to dock was informative and entertaining. Overall I highly recommended this experience while visiting Salem

We went earlier this week for a sunset sail. It was pretty overcast and windy yet still was so enjoyable! They have wonderful hot cider, some drinks / alcohol and snacks, and even let you help raise the sail or steer the boat if you’d like! You get a great tour of the area and the coastline is so pretty. Everyone was so friendly and they give you some history and even fire off a cannon. The lady, Melissa, was kind enough to let us borrow some extra coats for the ride because we didn’t expect such chilly weather which was beyond kind and accommodating! Can’t wait to come back and visit again. My family would love this! There is a restroom on board if needed, too.

Great experience! The boat was super clean and everyone was wearing a mask and social distancing. I think we had about 12 passengers plus 3 crew. The captain was very knowledgeable and made the trip very enjoyable. Volunteers can help raise the sails but there’s no pressure to do that. Beautiful views. You could buy drinks and snacks on the boat for a very small fee.

We've gone sailing on Fame a few times (maybe 4 all together), and every time it has been great.
I have two little kids, and they love to go out on the "Pirate Ship" (Privateer, Pirate, is there really a difference?) and sail around the harbor. They especially love when the cannon is fired... and that they sell snacks.
Mom and dad love to be out on the water, feel the boat as the wind fills the sails and she powers up... and that they sell beer.
Sailing around Salem and Marblehead is the perfect way to spend a few hours on a beautiful day, and the Fame crew do a great job.

Labor Day was a great day for a sail on the Schooner FAME of Salem. We had some lovely people on board, our Captain Mike Rutstein was delightful and informative and we also got some great history during the sail. I would highly recommend a September sail as the wind is great and the weather is wonderful. A great time was had by all on the schooner FAME of Salem.

Captain Mike, Brian, and Sully provided an exemplary tour! Tour attendees were invited to help raise the sails. The crew provided tasty 'Dark and Stormy' rum/ginger beer drinks ($6 each - not bad). Mike provided great insights to the role of the privateer in the 1812 war and how privateers differ from pirates.

We booked the sunset sail from this tour company. Although I wish we had gone earlier in the day because I believe then you get a tour of the local landscape/lighthouse, this was a great experience. The captain and crew were fantastic, fun, informative and extremely helpful. My husband got to help hoist the sails and his smile said it all! You can get a cool beer or rum and coke and a reasonable price, there are assorted chips to purchase too if you want a snack. The photo opportunities for the sunset were awesome. AND the captain even shot a mini cannon when we were at sea. LOTS of fun and relaxation! I highly recommend this if you are looking to just relax and enjoy the water.

Thank you for sailing. Every sail is a bit different, as we sail in different directions, depending on the wind, and see different parts of the Sound!

I really enjoyed this tour! We dedicated a day of our trip in Salem to everything Pirates and this was the perfect way to close out the day. After spending some time at the Real Pirates Museum and learning about key historic figures, this tour really put everything we learned into perspective. We stopped by Finz right after the tour (which is right next to the dock you depart from) and watched the sun set as we enjoyed our food. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in getting a taste of a Pirate's life.
