About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 641kristinew0 contributionsSunrise at HaleakalaAmazing tour guides! Learned a lot about the cultural significance of Haleakalā. The warm ponchos helped. We were unable to see the sunrise because of the clouds, but our guides stopped a little further down the mountain where we could see the Sunday and down into the crater.Written 8 November 2024
- Simone R0 contributionsThe sunrise was a disappointment, but the tour was definitely worth the money. In short, the clouds meant that the sunrise experience was not what we had hoped for, but the organization and customer service was excellent. We were contacted several times to ensure that we knew the pick up details, and the bus turned up promptly. Pick up was at our resort which was perfect. The tour guides (Abe and G) were friendly and professional, and we felt very safe on that narrow, winding road. The ponchos they provide were a Godsend - we thought we had dressed appropriately but it really is FREEZING up there! Unfortunately, the cloud cover meant that the sunrise was an anticlimax, but on the ride back down the clouds did lift and we were able to pull over and look at the wonderful views. For breakfast we went to Cafe O’Lei at The Plantation and that was wonderful- we went back later for dinner as the food and setting were both wonderful. Overall, the trip was well managed and we would recommend this tour.Written 7 November 2024
- O6545GJpatriciab0 contributionsSpectacular Experience, a Must Do!!!Sunrise tour to Haleakala was spectacular! Saw so many stars, beautiful moon rise, followed by sunrise. Our tour guides went above and beyond sharing native insights regarding island land management, cultural history, and so much more while keeping all participants comfortably warm. Phenomenal photo ops. Plantation breakfast very serene setting. This is one of a few tours this trip, definitely the highlight of our Maui experiece. Mahalo Billy and Brian!Written 3 November 2024
- savvystep6190 contributionsDon’t think about it! Just do it !!!!We had a very pleasant tour! Billy was on time, very knowledgeable and funny. Driving skills are on point! The bus was comfortable and spacious. Seats were able to recline back. He got us to the top of the mountain safely and efficiently. We were the first tour group to get up there and got the best seat to watch sunrise! We are so thankful he provided us with some fleece lined panchos. Helped a lot with the cold! With that being said, please layer up, it is very cold up there! 30 degrees, I’m from San Diego and that’s cold for us 😅 Layer up , wear some thick socks, scarf, beanie and some mittens. You may think I’m being over dramatic but you’ll thank me once you’re up there!! I saw some poor souls with no jackets up there freezing! Please do not make that mistake! The sunrise was amazing to watch! Amazing views!! At the end of the tour we were taken to breakfast at the Maui plantation. Beautiful location for breakfast. Mahalo Billy!Written 18 October 2024
- Pfnovak0 contributionsA great national park to visit! This was an amazing trip and to see the sunrise was spectacular. It is very cold up on the top so dress accordingly. However, Valley isle tours gave us lined wind blankets and it was a blessing. While other tour groups up there were absolutely freezing we were able to stand out and enjoy the sunrise. Billy was our tour guide and he was fantastic.....funny and knowledgeable.Written 17 October 2024
- 704terryt0 contributionsA Moving ExperienceConvenient and efficient pick up with knowledgeable and friendly tour guides. They were respectful on the way up and allowed us that wanted to rest to do so in quiet. Great about telling us what was next and warning about winding roads. The sunrise was AMAZING to experience from night’s darkness to the first light of dawn. Special bonus was first light chanting and welcoming of a new day. Highly recommend this tour to experience a sunrise at almost 10,000 feet and above the clouds.Written 6 October 2024
- Kathryn O0 contributionsFantastic sunrise trip!It was an amazing trip. Our guides and driver were experienced and shared great info. Ride was comfortable and the blanket wraps provided were the best- it’s windy and cold on top of the mountain. I really appreciated that our guides were native Hawaiian and to the island and could share their experiences.Written 3 October 2024
- Scenic129211309880 contributionsThe best sunrise everAmazing views, the driver and the guides were really nice and gave us a really good insight about the history of Hawaii. The breakfast was really good. Suggest you to wear really warm clothes for this tour since it gets really cold out there. Overall a really good experience , I highly recommend you try it.Written 17 September 2024
- MaretsL0 contributionsBreathtaking experience not to miss! This is one activity you don’t want to miss on Maui. Everett and G were awesome ! So well organized and they think about everything to make your trip really smooth. Everett shared so many interesting anecdotes and knowledge about Maui and Hawaii culture it kept us for sure awaken !! The sunrise is breathtaking. The poncho were a nice touch to handle the chilly weather up there. The breakfast in the incredible location ended the tour perfectly! Mahalo to Everett and G and the whole Valley Isle Excursions !Written 17 September 2024
- jwelford740 contributionsCold but satisfyingIt was more than I had expected. Beautiful to watch the day come alive and to hear the chant they do every morning. Was cold, but they supplied an extra covering to help with the cold. Enough though we were dressed in warmer clothes. I'm glad they did. Abe and Brian were great and they gave us history of their culture and showed compassion to everyone's needs as they arose. MaholaWritten 15 September 2024
- T2653BDseant0 contributionsYou Gotta Use Valley Isle!IMPORTANT: If you are going to watch the Sunrise from Haleakalā you need to use Valley Isle Excursions!!! My wife and I came to Maui for our 5 year anniversary and this excursion was one that we were both dreading and excited about. Dreading because we had to be awake at 2am to get picked up but excited to see the sunrise from the top of the island. Well the Valley Isle crew took all that dread away! When we got on the bus they made everything comfortable so that we could all sleep during the long drive to the mountain top. Not only did they make sure we were all comfortable, but they made sure we were one of the first groups on the top so we would be right up front and not stuck behind anyone during the sunrise. It really is an amazing experience and I highly recommend it! Be sure to wear layers because it is COLD at the top but warm at breakfast. We made the mistake not wearing layers.Written 15 September 2024
- 324rp0 contributionsFar exceeded my expectationsWe visited from Indiana . Tour was Safe and Meticulously organized. Driver was Guillermo and our guide was Everett. Prior to vacation we read many books and gathered information online about the land and the people but Everett knew things that I would not have known about or seen had we not been on this tour. He even offered everyone ginger chews, which I suspect he paid for himself. You can relax and enjoy the ride, not worrying about anything from admission fees to where the bathroom stops are to where to stand for the STUNNING view. Also breakfast at Maui Tropical Plantation FAR exceeded our expectations in terms of the gorgeous facility as well as the delicious food. I’m sure there are several solid tour companies, but if you are a planner like me, save yourself some time: stop researching and book this tour! It’s worth more than the cost.Written 13 September 2024
- Z9650ZUgabriellem0 contributionsAmazingViews were amazing! The parkas were a pleasant surprise with it being a little chilly up at the top. Billy our driver was absolutely amazing, he was so knowledgeable about Haleakala and the island of Maui & he had a great sense of humor! If you’re on the fence- just book this excursion. You won’t be disappointed!Written 11 September 2024
- Yvonne W0 contributionsSpectacular trip from the night sky - stars so numerous and bright to the beauty of the sun rising. Awestruck! The trip to see the sunrise was very well organized. Billy and Brian were awesome hosts, insuring our comfort and an awesome experience!Written 10 September 2024
- 579braulior0 contributionsHaleakalā and road to HanaTook both the Haleakalā and road to Hana tours while visiting Maui and both were fantastic. Billy for the Haleakala tour were knowledgeable and hospitable from 2:30am till the end of the tour! While Charleston was a fun and engaging guide for the full day on the road to Hana. Would recommend both tours to anything wanting to enjoy their stay in Maui and not worry about the logistics of going to both these locations.Written 5 September 2024

I was on this tour with these victomiagist, and if you follow this guy it is easy to see that it is him and his family not the company he reviews.
The driver, Dennis, (not Denis) was a delight. Kyle was the aggressor and was almost kicked off the bus 3 times. Dennis was more kind to these people then they deserved. They were not 4 minutes late, try 15. And their lack of hurry or worry about the other people on the bus, (that paid just as much for the tour), was sickening.
The whole day we waited for these people at least 10-15 mins per stop. Which robbed us all from stopping at any shops along the way.
These people claim Dennis was racist which is typical of today's society. "If it doesn't go my way then it is because I am being discriminated against. And to say Dennis is intolerant to people with disabilities is evident to their narcissistic point of view, because if they paid any attention to those around them, Dennis also has a clear disability. They clearly wear there afflictions as a trophy to be treated special. Well there were 3 other paying clients that had disabilities as well and they all managed to be on time every time. Maybe Kyle, it is not others in the world that make your life difficult it is you.
I would highly recommend this company for the road to Hana. The only thing I would say is to ask the driver which way he is taking and which side to sit on to get the ocean view.
The only thing that ruined the trip for all 8 of us, was the 4 people that were pour excuses of human beings. And that was not Dennis.

Our guide, Aiki'anu (probably misspelled), was really into the customs and old ways of Hawaii. We started on the backside of Hana going over the road that the car rental companies tell you not to drive. Our driver was excellent and stopped where the native Hawaiians are starting to homestead and restore the land from when all the sandalwood trees were cut down. He got out and lined us all up behind him while he sang the greeting to the woman in charge there and asked permission for us to enter the land. She sang the response (all in Hawaiian), we proceeded to enter and she talked to us about what they are doing there and how they are taking care of the land. We had many more unique stops and this is different than when I went on the tour years ago and far more educational.

My boyfriend and I just finished the tour for the Road to Hana! A must do if you’re ever in Maui and even more so, a must with Travis! Travis was entertaining, considerate and so knowledgeable with information about Maui’s history and current state. The tour provided breakfast and lunch. Breakfast was generic but lunch was amazing! Home cooked meal that any traveler would appreciate traveling far from home. We got picked up and dropped off at our hotel and had a wonderful time. Travis’s impeccable driving made us feel safe and was well worth the price.

Took two tours. The road to hana was a big loop counterclockwise. The guide for thus tour was nice but didnt impress me..almost talked too much. This is a popular tour so there are many separate vans each with thwir own guide.. The volcanoes of Maui tour was fabulous as the guide for this tour is absolutely outstanding. From what he said, he's the only guide who takes this tour?
Breakfast is fruit and baked muffins/pastries. Lunch is provided by a catering company and your guide will set it up at a park or similar location. The vans have huge windows and aircon.
Well organised company overall. Though i could never figure out how the discount for purchasing two tours works, despite emailing them (nil reply regarding this enquiry, they emailed back fine about other enquiries).

Our driver picked us up at the scheduled time and was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining. The bus was comfortable with 4 empty seats and only 3 other couples. Breakfast was delicious and served in a very attractive outside restaurant with beautiful gardens. Our driver “Andre” ( he has a beautiful Hawaiian name that I can’t recall), entertained us with his extensive knowledge of the island history and plants growing along the road, interspersed with jokes. Bathroom stops were frequent and sightseeing stops were always in safe places ( unlike some of the individual drivers we encountered along the way). I highly recommend this tour rather than trying to drive this oneself, it is a very dangerous, winding road and would be exhausting for the driver. A beautiful drive in pleasant company.

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for choosing Valley Isle Excursions for your Road to Hana tour and taking the time to write your review!
Our Breakfast location is at Maui Tropical Plantation and they have some of the most beautiful grounds on the Island of Maui. I often spend my free time there.
Andre or Mana (Hawaiian name) is very knowledgeable and he loves sharing his Hawaiian culture and history with is guest on tour.
You are correct in saying the road can be dangerous. With 618 turns and 51 one lane bridges its best to go on tour with an experienced driver. This allow a stress free day to enjoy the beauty of Hana!
I will pass along your kind words to Mana and we hope to see you again in the future!
Thank you,

My girlfriend and I spent a long day on the Road to Hana and Louie made the trip incredible. His love of the people, nature, and culture of the island made the day so enjoyable. We learned about everything from bamboo, the stories of waterfalls and sacred pools, food, Jaws, Charles Lindbergh, and 50 First Dates (now that's variety!) we had two young men (about 5 & 10) on the tour and he made them feel incredibly special. He remembered everyone's name and did a great job of including everyone in community conversations through his endless stories. He shared with us villages and towns and the best surf spots along the way. If you are going to take the Road to Hana, let someone else do the driving and Louie is the man!!!

We were thinking about renting a car for the road to Hana but kept hearing stories about driving the narrow, winding road. So glad we decided to use this company. Our driver, Mark, was very enjoyable with a great sense of humor. He gave us so much information through the entire trip. He was a great driver along this crazy narrow, bumpy road! The small bus only has a 12 person capacity and was very comfortable. Taking the tour gives you the ability to just enjoy all the beauty and let your experienced driver worry about your safety. It’s a long trip but getting to see the island and all it’s beauty is an unforgettable experience.

This is a review of the Road to Hana tour since Maui and some of the other islands required the negative COVID test upon entry.
We arrived on 11/28/20. Around 11/30 the company contacted us to say we were the only ones signed up for the tour and wanted to see if we could switch to Friday, 12/4, when enough people were signed up. Fortunately, our plans were flexible and we could make the switch. Otherwise, they indicated that they would've refunded the money.
At least 24 hours prior to the tour, one must forward copies of the negative COVID test for each person going on the tour and answer some health screening questions. Temperatures are taken at pick up and verified at breakfast. Breakfast was lovely and located at a golf course (open air). Breakfast included pastries, coffee, and fresh juice.
As others have mentioned, the tour takes all day. Since reopening, this tour is not doing the full Hana road loop around the island, as it used to. It's now going to Hana and turning back around. There are still many stops along the way. Depending on the weather, you'll see several waterfalls, get to swim in one, if you want, visit a couple of beaches, including a cave at one of the beaches and a few food stands. The breaks are frequent with bathroom breaks. You'll get history along the way. The roads are curvy and it's nice to have someone drive and show you areas you may not have known about. Locals drive the road more quickly and it's common for the bus to pull over to let others pass. While the road is curvy, I felt safe the whole time. Mountain roads in Costa Rica were more unsettling, in my opinion.
Bring a change of clothing, a towel, and a jacket. with hoodie or a poncho. Also bring cash. You'll want to bring a bag to carry all of these items. You can keep your items in the van. People are spaced out on the van (not traveling at capacity) and there's a hand sanitizer dispenser at the front of the bus. Driver and those on your wear masks entire time. Tour company did a great job with safety. In fact, one group of 4 that was to have been with us tested positive for COVID and thus could not attend-glad to see the precautions working.
Great views, lovely photos. I recommend at least doing once with a reputable company, and if you can, towards the beginning of your stay.

Good Morning,
First I would like to start by thanking you for choosing Valley Isle Excursions for your Road to Hana tour and second, thank you for such a wonderful review.
Since our reopening in November of 2020 with the Covid-19 pandemic still going on, we are constantly keeping up with all health codes and regulations. The health and safety of our passengers and employees has always been a high priority of Valley Isle Excursions.
Unfortunately, since there is not a high volume of travelers at the moment there have been days where we have had to cancel tour days due to not enough passengers. We are glad you were able to reschedule your tour date with us!
We hope to have you on tour with us again in the future!
Thank you,

We had a lovely experience with Uncle Joe on our Road to Hana tour. We were picked up exactly on time and taken to our continental breakfast at a golf club. After that, we started on our day-long trip.
One of the things we appreciated the most was that the tour went against traditional Road to Hana traffic (we went to South Maui first and approached Hana from the East). This made for a much less congested trip, and in my opinion, was the way to go!
Uncle Joe was a terrific guide, a fountain of knowledge as an island local. He kept everyone comfortable and on time for the entire day. He pointed out not only key landmarks, but also flora and fauna complete with origins and seasonality; celebrity properties, etc - there was some interesting knowledge for everyone.
We met some native Hawaiians on their homestead as we made our way around Haleakala in the morning and they were very interesting to hear from. It was lovely to hear about their conservation efforts for the environment and the local cultures.
Lunch was served at a nice little out of the way location (bbq chicken and cold salads). It was no 5-star Michelin restaurant meal but was just fine as a picnic lunch, and broke up a long day of travel; there was a small stand where you could purchase jewelry or trinkets, and had fairly clean restrooms.
Overall, nothing but good things to say about this group. I would definitely book another trip with them (particularly, I would try the Haleakala sunrise trip next time.)

We were off and on and whether to spend an entire day “ doing the road to Hana “. After all , you ask ten people and you get different opinions And if you go to Maui , it is definitely a must do The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and the tortuous road is an experience.
This company deservingly receives great reviews. They punctually picked up at the promised time (if you are worried about motion sickness, let them know and you will sit at the front of the bus ). The modified vans have 12 comfortable captain chairs with great views through the large glass windows. Our guide and driver was well versed , knowledgeable and humorous and provides a commentary through the whole day. Adequate breakfast is provided along the way , bathrooms stops and a picnic lunch which was just fine
Stops along the way , some longer than other , give you a taste of the towns , and the landscape and the lovely waterfalls.
Leave the driving to the professionals. The road is far from relaxing for a self drive and the driver would miss the views and know the history or stories that compliment the stops.
The only negative is that the all the public bathroom stops which are the responsibility of the government are inadequate ( one or two stalls )and filthy ( sinks without soap and toilet paper ) and pretty disgusting ( seepage is who knows what on the floor ) compared to travels in other parts of the USA

Mahalo for your great review on our driver and our company. We truly love to share our island, our culture, our history and most of all our Aloha with you.
As far as bathrooms on the road to Hana almost all we stop at are provided by the Government. We do provide toilet paper on our van if there is a need as well as hand soap/sanitizer and hand wipes. We take pride in the cleanliness and sanitation on our tours. We are the only tour company that provides bathrooms for our guests and have been doing this for years.
We are very grateful for all of our visitors and local communities that we serve.
Aloha,
Jimmy

Hi! Thank you for your help! I have three questions:
1. Does this tour allow you to stop and swim at waterfalls?
2. Do you get to see a blowhole?
3. Does it stop at the black sand beach?
Thanks!!

What happens if there are fewer than 12 people? What do we drive in? What time do we get back? Do you pick up in Kihei?
Thank you

Not sure what they do with less them 12, the day we went there was a couple tours so we were divided among the buses. The vehicle was like a 15 passenger shuttle bus type vehicle. We were picked up in Kihei and taken to the breakfast location and split off into groups. We were the last group back, I believe it was about 6:30.

Yes they also called them rainbow trees that they were a member of the eucalyptus family, and they were very cool.

How far in advance do you need to book.
Written 12 August 2019
I don't know if there is a hard and fast rule on how far in advance a person "can" book but I would not wait if you have specific dates in mind. When I booked, I looked ahead at the calendar and am almost certain that one of my choices was not available, so if you have the opportunity and are able to book before you arrive, I strongly recommend.
