About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Susan J0 contributionsTeo is the “go to” guide for Transylvania and MaramureşWe thoroughly enjoyed our five-day adventure with Teo. He is knowledgeable, well organized, and thoughtful (I had an issue with my ankle so he made sure that our accommodations and the places we visited were ones that I would have an easier time maneuvering). Most of all, he was fun to be with. He is so well-known in the Maramureş area that the crafts people and others we met knew him, and, therefore, we received particularly special and personalized experiences. He also toured us around Transylvania, which was very enjoyable and helped us find great “Dracula “souvenirs for our grandson and other family members. The accommodations he picked were special and typical of the area and provided delicious breakfasts and dinners. At lunch, we enjoyed a wide variety of restaurants along the way. And he made sure we tried all of the local specialties. He went out of his way to ensure that we had a good time and also learned a lot about the Transylvania and Maramureş areas of Romania and their histories. Having Teo personally guide us around the area was particularly easy and a great way to see these important parts of Romania.Written 8 October 2024
- 465crisw0 contributionsTeo is wonderfulTeo was an amazing guide. We took a two day tour specializing in crafters. We visited so many people and heard so many stories and all of it was fascinating. Teo’s knowledge of and love for his area shines through. We had experiences that would be impossible to have anywhere else. I thank Teo for making this all possible!Written 9 June 2024
- Elspeth L0 contributionsExcellent 8 day tour. Magnificent scenery. Experienced and knowledgeable guide.I wanted a tour from Iasi to Oradea that would encompass Bucovina and Maramures, many of the monasteries, painted churches, history of the area, including the Holocaust and Communism as well as meeting local crafts people and artists. I also wanted to stay in places for a couple of nights, eat traditional food and enjoy the beauty of the countryside and the mountains. Teo listened to everything I wanted and designed the perfect tour. He also gave me lots of good suggestions for the rest of my time in Romania. My tour with Teo was everything I hoped for and more. He was informative, knowledgeable, passionate and committed to his local area and willing to answer my many questions. He patiently waited as I processed lots of new information and different viewing points. I recommend Teo 100%.Written 8 October 2023
- JArm46880 contributionsWhat a wonderful experience!Teo was simply the best guide I have ever experienced. His knowledge of the area was incredible and we were able to see places and people we would never have come across as a regular tourist. Within all his knowledge his humour shone through, which made the experience even more fun. Thank you so much TeoWritten 12 June 2023
- Ladyofjaipur10 contributionsBeautiful Maramures, could happily have stayed another week, loved itFour of us spent several days with Teo seeing the best of Maramures. A fantastic time, so many places seen that we would never have found on our own. Local wood carvers, weavers, finding out about local traditions, the food, the beautiful countryside and lovely people, absolute perfection! Teo was so knowledgeable and fun too, a holiday I will always rememberWritten 11 June 2023
- marigold820760 contributionsMaramures TourToefil was a wonderful guide, very patient with the kids and was able to adapt the tour to fit our requests and our schedule. We got to see a working fulling mill powered by a water wheel, the beautiful village of Breb, and we visited with a local historian and a local craftsman and tasted some homemade spirits. We visited the Sapanta-Peri Monastery and the Merry Cemetery. It was a great day, and we loved all the local stories!Written 11 April 2021
- FrancisSt-Pierre0 contributions5 days Walking Tour of MaramuresWe did this tour last october. It was the best part of our trip. Teofil knows alot of things and he will show you things that cannot be seen without a guide. He was flexible, honest and very friendly. With him, we were able to visit local people and see inside people's homes. They also brought us to see a remote village in the hills, local artisans as well as the normal ''tourist'' sites. We highly recommend him if you want to visite this part of Romania. The Maramures is alot more than the Merry cemetary and old wooden churchs and Teofil was the person who allowed us to discover this. 10/10 would do this tour again. - CHCLE0 contributions2 day tour with Teofil Ivanciuc exceeded expectationsMy wife and I spent 2 days with Teo in Maramures. After spending 4 weeks in the Balkans, these 2 days were the highlight of our trip. Teo is so knowledgeable of this area and gives you the opportunity to witness so many things firsthand that would be impossible to see otherwise. We visited with workers in the fields, people at the outdoor market, individuals in their barns, outstanding carvers and people within their homes. We saw how they take care of their livestock and farms while catching all of the sights in the area like the Merry Cemetery and Romanian Orthodox churches. We are both 75 years old and getting to this area wasn't easy; however we rented a car in Bucharest and drove to Sighet, stopping at Brasov and Sighishora of the way.Written 11 November 2019
- patz8870 contributionsBest guide in 25 years of worldwide travelTeo of Maramures Tours is a wise and rare man. Deeply knowledgeable about the history, culture, weaving, current politics, ecology, geography and every other aspect of his beloved country, he manages to convey his love along with insightful comments. I'm a weaver. Teo got us into homes (and a 600 year old fulling mill!) to see the real stuff. We've travelled literally all over the world for 25 years and I've written a lot of reviews. I'm pretty much at a loss for words to describe Teo's excellent service. I'd go back to Romania just to see what else he could show us. Go to Romania/Maramures to meet Teo!Written 9 January 2019
- flewintopylon0 contributionsEssential in MaramuresThe tour explored different villages in the Maramures region. What you are able to see there depends on the season; (when I went there was not much farming activity) but we were able to visit the Merry Cemetery, a number of wooden churches, craftspeople, a local festival, a wedding party, scenic areas and local households. The tour will vary depending on what’s happening locally, so I would recommend taking this into consideration when planning the dates of trip (though they are closed to tourists in winter). We happened to visit on a Sunday so were lucky to see some religious services and meet people dressed in their beautiful traditional clothes. As a historian and writer who is deeply involved in the community and passionate about preserving its traditions, Teo’s knowledge of Maramures is formidable and it was such a treat to have him as my guide. He provided detailed information about everything asked of him, such as translations of inscriptions in the cemetery, and so much more besides. Teo was also invaluable at introducing us to some talented craftspeople in the area. With his accompaniment, we received a warm welcome everywhere we went. People were so inviting, generously showing us around their homes, sharing food and drink and even letting us try on their handmade traditional clothes. These experiences, and the great photographs I was able to take, were made possible by Teo’s rapport with the local people.Written 19 November 2015

We had just one day and Teofil somehow managed to make it a really special one. We are photographers and we had an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the locals which would have been impossible without him. His knowledge of local history, the area and those who live here is just mind blowing. You get the feeling that he knows everyone and that everyone truly likes and respects him. We learned a lot in a little time and are very grateful for that. I would not visit Romania again without spending more time with Teofil.

Maramures Tours was easily the best part of our trip to Romania. Teo was one of the most memorable tour guides we've ever had and took our trip to Romania from great to unforgettable. His passion, knowledge and love for the region were what sets him apart from other guides.
We had only a short time in Maramures and Teo helped build a custom tour for two days. We started with the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and then saw all the the Merry Cemetery and the wooden church in Calinesti. But the part of the tour that was really unique was visiting the local people in Maramures. It showed us what a unique part of the world Maramures was. With Teo we felt welcomed into people's homes to see a part of their culture.
Maramures was difficult to get to from Brasov or Bucharest but it was worth it! We were initially worried about safety being close to the border of Ukraine but felt totally safe. We would recommend this tour to anyone! It is absolutely worth the travel there or extending your time in Romania to fit it in.

We spent two amazing days with Teofil and the whole experience was wonderful. Teofil is very informative and knows where to find all hidden gems of Maramures. Throughout the tour, we had the pleasure to see medieval churches, traditional craftsmen, and superb landscapes all around us. Teofil knows everyone around many towns in Maramures and for this reason, we had the luck to get a close look at people's traditions and their way of living. Being welcomed in their houses and serving the traditional brandy together, along with seeing people being almost completely self-sufficient made the whole experience inspirational. We are honored for meeting Teofil and all the wonderful people of Maramures. We hope to return soon!

We are so glad to have found Teofil of Maramures Tours. We took a two day tour with him to gain insight into the region and have a better understanding of daily life. Our first day consisted of visits to local artisans and residential neighborhoods, and we visited at least ten different places. The second day, we visited the Merry Cemetery, several wooden churches, several villages, and observed religious services since it was Sunday.
What a magical experience and a special time. The day's itinerary is completely flexible so you can see what you want to see, and spend time according to your priorities (like trying to use a scythe to cut grass!). We were able to gain access to meet and talk with people and visit places that we would have never known about or been able to since we don't speak Romanian. Teo's knowledge of the region and its history is second to none, and he has longstanding friendships and relationships everywhere it seems! He has a great rapport with everyone, and is socially skilled at making everyone feel comfortable. You might think that it would be somewhat awkward visiting a small village with a tour guide and sitting down in someone's home to speak with them through a translator, but with Teo it was perfectly natural and very comfortable. People everywhere we went were so friendly, curious, and welcoming. It's evident that everyone thinks very highly of Teo and that he has great integrity. It was also convenient having him pick us up and drive us around, so we could enjoy talking, looking, and taking photos.
Thank you so very much for giving us insight into this beautiful, unspoiled region, and for being such a gracious, flexible host!

If you want to know Maramures from a true local, Teo is your man. Born and bred for many a generation. Journalist that is now a tour guide, this man oozes his love and passion of the region from every pore in his body. Well versed on all aspects of life in the region as well as Romanian life in general. We had a full packed day visiting wooden churches, monasteries, the Merry Cemetery, markets, local craftsmen, workers in the fields, locals in the streets the list goes on. Came away from our trip feeling we have gained a great insight to this wonderful region.

What an amazing day we had on a tour. Teofil picked us up where we were staying to start the tour. He is so knowledgable about everything in the area since he is a native. The fact that he spoke English made it an amazing day of learning and discovery in Maramures County Romania. We were able to visit with locals, watch them perform their trade and try them out ourselves, (my son tried scything, I tried weaving on a loom and spinning yarn by hand). Nothing was rushed - he'd pull over so we could take pictures or if we wanted to shop with an artisan he waited patiently for us to do so. He took us to some of the main tourist attractions, but our time in the countryside interacting with everyday people is what made this trip so amazing. He definitely made the tour the highlight of our time here!

I spent 2 wonderful days discovering the Maramures region with Teofil of Maramures Tours in August. Teofil's love and passion for the Maramures comes out in everything he shows you. Getting a look into the lives of people who are holding on to their traditional peasant lifestyle was amazing. Teofil seems to know people in every village. Other highlights were visiting many of the wooden churches of Maramures as well as Merry cemetery. I stayed with Teofil and Adela at their traditionally build house and guest house. Adela food was a treat and eating with them only helped to make the experience more personal.

Teofil Ivanciuc's (maramurestour.com) 2-day guided tour was hands down one of the best tour experiences my husband and I have ever been on. Teo helped provide guidance about bus schedules and trains even prior to our trip. He picked us up directly at our hotel in Sighetu Marmatiei and guided us for two very full days throughout the region. Teo was well spoken, experienced, informed, and well connected. He provided us with so much historical background to the area, including recent history. We had the pleasure of meeting local residents in their own homes and work areas which was incredible. Teo was also honest and very witty - he's got a great personality as well. Teo explained - and showed us - that the people of Maramures are what make the region. I would highly recommend his tours.

We have been to many places on many trips but the two days we spent with Teo in Maramures will not be forgotten. The only way to truly experience Maramures is with a guide like Teo, a true local. He is a knowledgeable. Besides some of the main tourist attractions Teo took us to the countryside where he would stop by the road to sit down and talk with the locals, People everywhere we went were so friendly, curious, and welcoming.. We saw the real stuff like an old water mill, a distillery, a wood carver, a waiver and stopped to talk to farmers working the fields. We would have never experienced Maramures’s way of life had we not toured the area with Teo. He is knowledgeable about the history, the culture, the geography of the region. Being a journalist he knows everybody and has contacts everywhere. We read before our trip, that Maramures is one of the few places were times stood still. It is true, Teo showed a multitude of old customs conserved from time immemorial. No work on Sunday, peace and quiet: “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest.” Teo showed us how strictly the farmers keep the commandment. Monday, back to weekly routine, they use ancient work methods and tools, organic farming is on not because it is new but because it is as old as it gets… However, Teo showed how some innovations did penetrate: house building, roofing, vehicles. Thank god, the mamaliga, the steaks, the trout, and the palinca (brandy) are still the same as many generations ago. Teo recognizes every tradition and consequently also every novelty that broke through his fairy tale county.
We highly recommend Teo.
