Discover Hawaii's most breathtaking natural sights on a small-group van tour that's brimming with towering volcanoes, lush rainforests, and magnificent coastlines. Experience the islands' many microclimates and environments during a tour that exposes you to a little bit of everything. After convenient pickup from your hotel, travel to the lush rainforests found in great abundance on the island's east side. Make your way to Hilo via Saddle Road, reaching an elevation of almost 6,800 feet (2,072 m). Along the way, pass through many of the microclimates that make the Big Island among the most exceptional places in the world. As you approach Hilo, glance inside a once-scorching conduit of molten rock from the Mauna Loa Volcano as your guide enlightens you to the significance of lava tubes to Hawaii's creation. After a quick trip into the nearby Kaumana Caves, check out Waianuenue, also known as Rainbow Falls. This stunning 80-foot (24-m) drop has beckoned generations of visitors to Hilo. After lunch at Hilo Sharks Coffee, visit the village of Pahoa and drive along the famous Red Road, which follows the Puna Coast on the southeast flank of Kilauea volcano. This beautiful stretch of paradise showcases some of the island's youngest and most scenic coastline. Lush rain forests give way to black cliffs, rocky coastlines, and crashing waves. Your journey along this road ends at Kalapana, a town that was mostly buried by lava in 1990. Next up is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and the summit of Kilauea volcano. Gaze into Kilauea's vast summit caldera, formed 500 years ago. The drive takes you past pit craters, scorched earth, steaming ground, and lava flows old and new. Enjoy plenty of opportunity to stop, look around, and learn about what's going on both above and beneath the ground.

        Natural beauty
Our tour guide Scott had a good sense of humour and was very knowledgeable, especially about volcanoes. He took us to many beautiful places on the big island. Highlights for us were Kilauea volcano, Punaluu Black Sand Beach and Akaka Falls.

What an amazing day. So many wonderful sights. Scott was a fantastic guide, full of knowledge and very accommodating. It was amazing to see how diverse the landscape is on the Big Island. We would definitely recommend this small group tour.

Fun and Fabulous Tour for All Ages!!
This Big Island Big Volcano tour was fabulous. Scott, The Volcan Van (or Man how he should be called.) Picked us up right at our resort. It was just my husband and I) He had asked us for our lunch selection (prior to our tour), had plenty of water and snacks. Scott was amazingly informative of every landmark we passed. He was energetic, funny and the best compliment I can pay him is that although he has done this tour for years, he was as excited as us, so he made it "new" for us. We stopped for very delicious Malasadas (Hawaiian sweet bun) they were great. Scott told us all about the many volcanic eruptions, tsunamis over hundreds and thousands of years. We felt like we were on "moving" seminar as he pointed all the sights. Hard to say which was our favorite: The Akaka Falls was mesmerizing. I felt I was in Jurassic Park and any moment TRex would appear. Walking through The Lava Tube was beautiful and eerie at the same time. When we got to Kiluea Caldera we were speechless. It was so amazing to be that close to this live volcano. No eruption but there were steam vents visible throughout the caldera. Scott let us take our time at each landmark. We never felt hurried. When we got to the black sand beach there were 12 Hawaiian Green Turtles just chilling and napping on the sand. This was so sweet to see. I can go on and on about all the sites we saw during this 8.5 hour private tour. We HIGHLY recommend this tour and HIGHLY recommend that you are lucky and blessed to have this young man share his beautiful Big Island. We hope to come back again and would do this tour again!@

Great time; knowledgeable, small group tours
A great experience. Scott knows the Island well and he showed us sights and took us to places that we wouldn’t have been able to find or experience without him. He was very knowledgeable about the Island and it’s history. We would highly recommend.

Great experience maximizing our sightseeing time
Scott was incredibly knowledgeable and patient with our photography in our private tour of the island. We learned a lot about the big island and saw everything that we had discussed. He also provided water and lunch - a sandwich - which was delicious. We really appreciated that Scott focused on maximizing our time together to sightsee, including having our lunch on the go. We were thrilled after the tour and can't recommend Scott highly enough.

Great way to see the island without renting a car
This tour was perfect for us. We didn't want to rent a car, but wanted to see as much of the island as we could. Scott with the Volcano Van picked us up at 9 am at our hotel (the Royal Kona Resort), and we drove all the way around the island with multiple stops: Honoka'a for a yummy Malasada, Laupāhoehoe Point (gorgeous), 'Akaka Falls, Kīlauea volcano (on my bucket list), Nāhuku Lava Tube, and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park (with sea turtles). Scott contacted us the night before and provided our choice of sandwiches for lunch, along with a bottle of water. He is very knowledgeable about the island and the volcanoes, we highly recommend this tour for teens and up.

        Volcano Van Adventure
A Tropical storm watch was predicted the day we planned for the volcano van. Scott had followed the weather and suggested re-routing due to the timing of the storm for our viewing pleasure. He was aware not to drive us to places where the visibility was poor due to the storm. As the day went on and weather changed he informed us of his professional suggestions about our itinerary. Scott had an upbeat and energetic personality with a great sense of humor. His knowledge of volcanoes was very impressive! He knew the names and year of each volcano and what type of lava flowed as a result. He was able to give us extensive history of the island and Hawaiian culture. He was aware to make sure we had regular restroom stops. Scott was flexible and made impromptu visits to bakeries and a coffee shop for Hawaiian delicacies. We highly recommend Scott to our family and friends! By the way, the tour was 8 hours, not 11 hours as advertised by the website Mahalo Scott!

Wonderful day spent with the Volcano Van!
We had a wonderful time spending our day with Scott! We did a private tour and he tailored the experience for us and we couldn't have had a better time. Scott is full of history and information about the island and answered any questions we had throughout the day. Our highlights were the waterfalls and volcanoes. Definitely recommended everyone book a tour with Scott, The Volcano Van, you will thoroughly enjoy your day and learn so much about the island.

        Take this tour!
I thoroughly enjoyed my day with Scott and two other tourists as we drove through this beautiful island. He is so knowledgeable about volcanoes! It was inspiring to see the results of thousands of years of volcanic activity here. We had a good balance of exertion and rest throughout the day. Honestly, the time flew! 100% recommend!

Great full day of Volcanoes and waterfall!
Had a fantastic day with Scott! He created a fantastic day for us even though the parts of the volcano were closed to us due to activity. We still saw the crater, but then got to see the lava flows from 2018 and Akaka falls. Great day for a cruise ship stop. Scott is a great , fun guy who is VERY knowledgeable about the island and volcanoes. My sister is a plant nerd and he knew all the names as well. There were 5 of us (youngest 8 and oldest 78) all had a great time. You should book this tour for your volcano fun!

Full day tour of this amazing island!
Scott picked us up at our hotel right on time and gave us an amazing tour! His explanations of what we were experiencing were very good. Since we only had 4 people in the van, he could focus on any area of interest we wanted. He took us to many different areas, including 'Akaka Falls, a lava tube near Pepeeko-Kawainui, Tex Drive Inn for some amazing malasadas, and a fantastic visit to the Kilauea crater. Several people knew Scott along the way - which helped us get fantastic treatment! This is a full day tour, and there are some parts of the drive that are a bit long. This is probably not a great tour for young kids or those who have trouble sitting quietly. However, it is perfect for anyone interested in the natural beauty and power of this amazing island!

Scott was a great guide and helped us make the most of our short visit to the Big Island. We got to see so much and the tour was interesting, informative, and fun - despite the rain! Also delicious - loving the guava malasadas!

The Volcano Van - Awesome Tour
Wow, what a fantastic day! We got some of our favorite pictures from our trip to Hawaii while we were on The Volcano Van tour. Scott showed us all of the amazing sights around the Big Island as well as shared his vast knowledge about the volcanoes, the different ecosystems and so much more about this unique island. The day we spent with Scott was a real highlight of our time in Hawaii.

SCOTT WAS AWESOME!!! We did a volcano tour with Scott right after the Kilauea volcano erupted in late December 2020. He picked us up from our Airbnb and was very well prepared for covid safety during the tour. He carried hand sanitizer in the car and made sure the car was well ventilated by keeping windows open for the most part of the tour and keeping his mask on.

Scott was also extremely flexible with the itinerary of our tour. We wanted to hike across the volcano crater on the Kilauea Iki trail which isn't a part of Scott’s original tour but he accommodated our request and hiked with us throughout the trail which included some seriously steep parts. The full hike was about 3 hours after which we were pretty exhausted and hungry. Scott was prepared with fresh pineapple, chips, and really good chicken sandwiches (more chicken than bread, just the way it should be!) for us. For the last part of our tour, we wanted to hang out around the erupting Kilauea to see if we could catch the lava glow in dark. The weather got pretty rough around sunset with some showers along with chilly winds. But just like the hike, Scott hung out with us while we waited for the sun to set, and never let the energy down!!

Scott is also extremely knowledgeable when it comes to volcanoes and the history of Hawaiian islands. I learned more about volcanoes on this trip than I did in all my past years. We highly recommend Scott to anyone visiting Big island and looking for a day full of fun and learning.

In February we enjoyed two days of touring with The Volcano Van on the Big Island. Both the Kilauea Summit to Shore from Kona and Heavenly Hamakua from Kona were great tours. Scott is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide who ensures his guests are comfortable and enjoying the tour. We came away with a new appreciation and understanding for volcanoes and the diversity of climates on the Island. Both tours had something different to offer and it was a great way of both of us seeing and learning about Hawaii without the stress of driving. Thanks Scott for the good memories. Excellent!

Scott is amazing. Friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. He connected with everyone in our group and by the end of the day we had running jokes and a great rapport throughout.

The volcano is amazing. The malasadas at the Punalu'u bakery are not to be missed. We loved the black sand beach and were happy the sea turtles waved at us. The waterfall and lava tube were also great. Overall this is the best way to get introduced to the big island.

Cannot overstate just how great Scott's contagious enthusiasm and genuine passion really made this experience fun.

I highly recommend taking the Volcano Van Tour of Kilauea Summit to Shore from Kona: Small Group with our tour guide Scott. He was helpful and made it convenient from the initial booking to the finish.
We stopped at all of the beautiful spots along the way and he took into account our particular interests. His commentary was educational, engaging, as well as humorous. The personalized service, including a wonderful lunch, made this one of our favorite days on the Big Island. Fortunately for us, Kilauea was erupting, and we were able to watch, from his colleague’s telescope, the lava flowing which made it that much more exciting and interesting, This tour and everything about it was great. Well worth it.

This was our first trip to the Big Island and we did the tour on our Day 1 of our trip. The weather was questionable and Scott called us to see if we wanted to reschedule or go ahead. Since we didn't have any other time available, we decided to go. Good decision. While it did rain at points during the day, the overview of the island helped us to make decisions on what to see and do the following few days. We were the only guests he had for the day so the itineary was up to us. We chose to see the volcano parts first going through Saddle route to Hilo, then coming up and over the top of the island via Hwy 19. Scott knew the waterfalls we'd like to see, hidden views of the ocean that we would not have found and we passed a few things that I decided we did not have to do the following days. Scott was knowledgable, not only about volcanos but also vegetation, wild animals and history. I wondered how he could remember all those dates, numbers and names but couldn't check his accuracy (having no internet to fact-check)...he was certainly passionate about it! We learned a lot about lava and understood that the landscape we saw was not buldozed land ready to develop, but was actually all lava rock. Lunch was provided and tasty, I'd just share a donut next time instead of ordering one each. They were filling! It was helpful to have a pick-up and drop-off at the hotel door. We thoroughly enjoyed the view, the drive and appreciated we didn't have to navigate. We did that on our own (including getting lost) the next few days.

We met Scott at the port and away we went on a great adventure. We got to walk through lava tubes, see red lava at Kilauea, and see turtles on black sand beaches. My wife liked that Scott could point things out while driving. His knowledge of the land is very impressive. It was so cool to have a private guide give us a tour of the Hawaii volcano national park. Scott is who you want to take you on your tour. If you are on a cruise and want a private tour of the area, call the Volcano Van! You will not be disappointed!

We had so much fun with Scott!! Because we came in the off-season, we got lucky enough to have our own private tour that was catered to exactly what we wanted to see. We even stopped at a few local spot here and there. Scott is the perfect combination of an informative, cheesy, genuine guide. It was great spending a few hours with a fellow volcano nerd, and to see all the beautiful nature sites we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to see. Highly recommend!!

Scott was awesome! He was funny, knowledgeable, and fun to hang out with on this tour. Me and my kids had so much fun doing this! So much better than those big tour busses with a bunch of people on them. This was personable and my kids really enjoyed that it was just us 4. I would recommend Scott and this tour to anyone looking. He picked us up at our hotel, provided lunch and water, we got to see so much of the Island we would have never seen without him. What a fantastic experience!

Really enjoyed the tour with Scott today in the Volcano Van. Saw some awe inspiring views of the Kilauea caldera. He was passionate and knowledgeable about volcanos and all the other aspects of the park and Big Island. He was also super helpful with everyone in our family (esp. the slow folks.) Great with the kids (and has a daughter the same name as ours!) Highly recommend booking a tour with him!
