About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Kcd20160 contributionsDon’t do the prepaid options! We really did have a good time… I just left with a bad taste in my mouth. I prepaid for a beer flight, which was $50 for a single flight. Already drastically overpriced, but, we were gonna be on a boat. Let’s splurge a little. Then we get on the boat and the “flight” was 2 beers. Had I waited and just bought the same two beers on the boat it would have been 1/2 the price! I’m sorry this was most of my review but after what otherwise was a great sail, this is what stood out :/ views and crew were great though.Written 24 November 2024
- joyrD585WZ0 contributionsA truly special experienceLiving in NYC my whole life, I thought I’d seen it all of the ways it could be seen, but I was wrong. I took Manhattan By Sail’s Sunset Jazz Sail, and I saw my home town in a new way. It was a truly special experience. The owner and crew made us feel welcome, and even invited us to help raise the sails. The owner created a custom non alcoholic cocktail for me, which was delicious. As the sun set over the harbor, jazz musician Mike set the mood while we enjoyed stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, Governor’s Island, Ellis Island, and lower Manhattan. We returned to shore as night fell, yesterday’s super moon reflected in the waters of the harbor. Whether you’re visiting NYC, or are local, Manhattan By Sail will show you the city in a way you’ll always remember. I will definitely be back.Written 16 November 2024
- JanK9870 contributionsJazz CruiseWe loved the sailing! The crew was outstanding, the jazz was wonderful and the views of the skyline were amazing!! I would highly recommend!! We have been to Manhattan many times but this is the first time we have done something like this!! Loved it!Written 4 November 2024
- 78Gabriele230 contributionsFew emotionsI expected much more from this rather boring sailing trip. The participation of the people on board was limited to hoisting, in a group, two larger sails and that's it, nothing else, neither action nor information, no explanation was given on how a sailing boat goes and not even stories or the like, nothing. A slow and boring ride to the Statue of Liberty and back with the engine running, valid only for a few photos that can be taken for much less with other boat tours.Written 29 October 2024
- DBMilano0 contributionsGood, but no longer amazingI have done this cruise already 3 times. A few years ago, it was amazing. Very chilled, true sailing, nice jazz music. This time around the entire tour was done with the (loud) engine on, yet it was really just a trip to the Statue of Liberty and back.Written 27 October 2024
- A6384JXsusieg0 contributionsThe Best Way To Enjoy Sunset in All of NYCOnce In A Lifetime Amazing Experience October 2024 Honestly overwhelmed by how outrageously fabulous this experience was. Sailing by the Statue of Liberty with the sun setting behind it, sipping a Cabernet as splendid live Jazz floated through the harbor was a once in a lifetime experience —- both for locals like us and tourists. These are the moments you want to share with family and friends. This boat is AUTHENTIC and GORGEOUS. The sails are tremendous!!! If this wooden sailboat could talk we would be intrigued by its history. This is the real deal, To say the entire crew was extremely professional is an understatement. The staff makes you feel like you are in the World Cup - crisp Navy Blue uniforms impart the elegance of the yachting community. As the motor boats and ferries pass by you will feel a tremendous sense of gratitude for the boat you are on and the team that make such an awesome sailing adventure accessible to ordinary folk. This wooden Tall Ship is the most magical part of the South Street Seaport. Perfect.Written 26 October 2024

- bradk7360 contributionsAbsurd cancellation and refund policy.I can not rate this other than a "0". We received a text message a 7am the day of the cruise indicating they were cancelling the cruise with no acceptable reason other than a bad weather forecast. Well, the day of the cruise there was no bad weather at all...some mild rain, calm winds etc....so we are out $60 each with no opportunity for a refund (go read their absurd refund policy). I plan to challenge the credit card charge based on the service provider not delivering the promised service. We suspect the cruise was cancelled due to not enough people signing up. SCAM in the firs degree.Written 29 September 2024
- Mycorft310 contributionsGet way to spend a few hours.Four of us decided to take the jazz sunset cruise. The two jazz musicians were, great the drinks on board were not inexpensive, but generous. The captain looked and spoke like a guy from an Adam Sandler movie, which made us laugh and a little nervous starting out. I was also concerned, I am prone to motion sickness, when I spotted how the ship was reacting to the wakes of passing boats. Those concerns were soon set aside, the crew is well trained, and I was even allowed to help raise the sail. My wife and I have taken numerous trips to New York and have done tons of things, but she called this cruise her favorite thing we have ever done in NYC. The sights were perfect, the cruise was relaxing and we had fun the whole time.Written 28 September 2024

- 614ciarann0 contributions3 cancellations and poor return policy! We were in New York for 5 days - I paid for this and booked to go on the Wednesday only to be told they had to cancel the trip. Re-booked for Friday, and they cancelled again, re-booked for Saturday and it was cancelled again!! They have provided me a voucher to use when i return... however I am from the UK and do not think i will be back to NYC for years! So i am $208 down. Only positive is that they are responsive on emailsWritten 15 September 2024

We couldn't arrive that early, so we booked the 9 pm. Capable & friendly staff. Nice lit up skyline, but we'd appreciate the sailboat more if it were daylight.Written 15 September 2024

I love sail boats and I have tried most sails in NYC. Clipper City Boat was the biggest sail boat, full bar with all sorts of drinks, snacks and cocktails, accepts credit cards too, young friendly staff who made the sailing experiments fun, and the music was great too. Even though the line to get on the boat was big, it was enough space for everyone to enjoy and walk around even in a covid era. Would definitely come back with a big group too!

Beautiful sailing ship with plenty of space for the passengers, since everyone had a place to sit. Have a drink from the bar, good service. The sails were even hoisted, we didn't expect that. A very relaxed ride and no comparison to a round trip two days later (crammed, lousy bar, almost no seats outside), we can highly recommend.

The day started out rainy and our captain delayed the trip for about 20 minutes as clearer skies were coming. We still had some rain but this trip is a must-do if you like boats and the Statue of Liberty! I even got to help raise the sails!
The bartender makes a mean spiked hot cocoa to give us some extra warmth and after sailing for a bit, we got to see the Statue of Liberty from up close. Sailing back showed us beautiful sights of the skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge and the harbor. Loved this!!

I was very disappointed in our experience. There was no narration of any kind, not even to point out significant points of interest. The 2 hour "cruise" only went a short distance and spent most of the time waiting to get closer to the statue of liberty and then turning around. It was quite boring.
The site mentions that drinks and "snacks" are available. The only snacks were chips- plain and barbeque, not much of a selection.
While my son enjoyed the opportunity to "help" hoisting the sails, they were somewhat demanding in wanting passengers to help. Three times, she got up and said "We could use a little help with the sails- we have 2 small boys helping". Seemed more like they needed passengers instead of offering it as a neat experience.

I am sorry you didn’t enjoy your time with us.
You are correct in pointing out that we do not make announcements throughout the sail. I am sorry if you believed you had booked a narrated tour. While very welcoming to visitors from far and wide, we at Manhattan By Sail take pride in providing our guests with a non-narrated and serene respite from the intensity of the hustle and bustle of NYC. Because we raise our sails and shut off the engine whenever conditions allow, we have found that our guests generally prefer the more sensory pleasure of hearing the wind rustling the sail l, the slap of the waves against the hull and the call of a seagull or the clanging of the channel buoys more than having a guide point out the many landmarks of NY Harbor. In our introductory welcome speech, we invite guests to ask any questions you may have of our knowledgeable and engaging crew. Because we are operating a vessel affected by elemental forces of Nature many factors determine how much time we can spend sailing on a given trip. A lack of wind or a very strong adverse current may require using the engine more on some trips than others in order to give our guests a proper experience and get out to the Statue and back in our allotted time.
Thank you for your comments regarding our snack offerings. Normally we have granola bars, peanuts and beef jerky in addition to our chips.
Seems like our crewperson was just trying to playfully engage with passengers; sorry if you did not appreciate that and it landed wrong.
Thank you for your comments.

I would not recommend this boat tour. We booked our tour at 2.30 pm on Saturday. Unfortunately the boat was late and came at 3.10 only and we still waited until 3.30 to departure.
Instead of 1h 30 m tour as supposed to be it was only 1 h 20 min. The weather was nice, sunny and I still do not get why the boat was late for 1 hour. No apology from the agency or availability to cancel the tour and get a refund. Shame!
If you have any plans and booked some sightseeings in advance I would highly recommend to avoid this agency.
For the price of $60 per person you can find a better option around.

Sorry we didn’t provide you with an excellent experience. The captain had delayed departure that day when he saw something he was concerned about when completing an engine check prior to departure. Safety is always first but I apologize if we somehow didn’t communicate the reason for the delay to you.

Totally recommendable if it weren't for the surprise of the payment, I did it with a 2-day all-inclusive New York pass, the New York go city pass, they ask for your Visa in case you don't show up and my surprise was that after finishing On the tour, when I arrived at the hotel, I received an email about a charge of $60 despite having the pass scanned. When I arrived 20 minutes early, as requested, a guy read me the QR code and gave me a token.
Attention, it is worth doing it
Be careful with the Visa

The weather was gorgeous that day! The crew was very informative, helpful, and efficient. For being so young, they did a great job of sailing the ship. The views of the NYC skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the surrounding areas are unique from the water and I definitely recommend it for anyone who hasn't seen them from that perspective yet, local or visitor. Being on the water under sail, with no motor noise is one of my favourite places to be. Highly recommended!

I thought the cruise was fantastic. The crew let everyone participate in the raising of the sails. There was a full bar on board, and the ride was smooth. I enjoyed looking at the diffrent landmarks as we went down the coast. We got to see Governors Island at the Statue of Liberty. The vibe was pleasant. I would def come back again.

Informed by email at 1.30pm due to "Delayed Maintenance " our 3.30 sailing was cancelled. So either very bad planning or somethings broken. As an international visitor zero support was offered when I asked if I could rebook in the next two days before we flew home, "We will let you know if anything opens up". Recommend you go with an opperator who has more than one vessal.

The sailboat is beautiful, without a doubt. The staff, very friendly. The views of Manhattan, good. But I thought the journey was going to be longer, because in the end it's practically the same as the free orange one, and I don't think it's worth the €60-70 I think it costs (it was free for me because it was included in a pass). . As for the number of people, I don't think we were less than 50. There is little shade. And as for the company, they canceled my trip at first, I wrote them an email and they never responded. Evil!! You have to respond to customers

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. Your 90 minute trip aboard one of the largest passenger sailing ships in the USA was rescheduled due to stormy weather & safety concerns. The cruise is an outdoor experience and we ask that you make sure that you dress appropriately & are able to be in nature and outdoors for the duration of the excursion. There are other options if you do not want to experience sailing aboard a traditional sailing ship. The ferry boat you referenced has a lot of shade and you can be indoors the whole time. Perhaps that would have been a better option for you. Unfortunately, when you wrote to us to complain about the cancellation you entered an incorrect email address. We responded to you but the message could not be sent. Please take responsibility for your own lack of attention to details. We are sorry for your inconvenience.

I have read somewhere that that the ship is not really sailing, but driving by an engine. Is this true? Is it a real "sailing experiance" by wind craft? Where is the difference to the Shearwater Tour besides the smaller ship?
