About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 658terrir0 contributionsGo on this tour!Andre was a fantastic guide! He told us so much history about Chinatown and how impacted it is by the financial district being mostly vacant now. It was a beautiful day and all the tastings( more like 2 meals plus treats along the way) were so great. We had a small group of five. North Beach was also wonderful!Written 14 January 2025
- maryrQ8457MW0 contributionsAn Educational and Engaging North Beach Tasting TourAs locals, we were amazed by how much we learned about the rich history of North Beach. The tour was made exceptional by the knowledge and passion of Scott L., who loves the city, and its history, and knows all the best spots—along with the locals who make the area so special. It was a fantastic reminder of how great our city truly is. Thanks for an unforgettable experience!Written 13 January 2025

- D1291FWchiarag0 contributionsFantastic cultural window into iconic San Francisco for my teensOur tour guide Scott was absolutely fantastic. It was a great balance of history, culture, arts and delicious food. I highly recommend it to both locals and visitors. I want to do another one with Scott in particular.Written 4 January 2025
- Sumi D0 contributionsGood food and interesting historyThis was a culinary walking tour of Chinatown and North Beach. We enjoyed the food, but the real highlight was our guide, Ryan, who was a wealth of information on the food and especially the history of the neighborhoods and establishments we visited. The city should hire Ryan as head of PR.Written 22 December 2024
- karenbV5134GL0 contributionsFabulous North Beach tour!Andre was a fabulous tour guide. So knowledgeable about North Beach and surrounding area. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and the food! Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to experience North Beach.Written 16 December 2024
- rayc4020 contributionsGreat way to see these neighborhoods! We had a great experience with our guide, Isabella. She has a wealth of knowledge about the history and culture of these two incredibly different and diverse neighborhoods. She provided us with different options to customize our experience to our tastes. Highlights for us were the spicy green beans and the tea tasting. But the whole experience was fantastic!Written 3 December 2024

- Explorer354451336310 contributionsA great way to experience SFThis was such a fantastic tour! The stops were perfectly planned. We tried so many things in both Chinatown and North Beach. We visited historical sites and even saw part of a theater performance. Andre was an excellent guide—personable, knowledgeable, and entertaining. Highly recommended!!Written 25 November 2024
- dreenyang0 contributionsGreat food and stories for family of four⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Andre delivers an excellent tour of Chinatown and North Beach. The experience includes four delicious food stops, three desserts, and a memorable tea tasting. As a Chinese person, I was particularly impressed by Andre's deep knowledge of Chinese culture and his ability to bring fresh angles to his delivery. Andre proved super knowledgeable about both neighborhoods, sharing engaging stories and providing thoughtful answers to all our questions. Each food selection was carefully chosen, and his commentary added valuable context to every stop. This tour offers the perfect blend of culinary experiences and cultural insights. Highly recommended for anyone interested in exploring these historic neighborhoods through food and story.Written 24 November 2024

It was a spectacular day and we were tired and very happy If you are in this part of the planet do NOT hesitate this tour dumplings, moon cakes, tea, pizza, wine, cannoli and more. This is a value packed tour, one you will never forgetWritten 14 November 2024
- cindymV7917NE0 contributionsOne of the best food tours I have been on, and I have been on manyCynthia was so organized, we didn't have to wait for any of our stops for the staff to take care of us. The history along with stops to see other things (beside food) in both locations were great and unexpected. We sat down for two meals one in each location, never feeling rushed. We had a tea tasting, which was very educational besides fun. saw how they get the white strip of paper inside fortune cookies. Went to see a rehearsal of a program with acrobats, which we came back later to see the show. Definitely kept busy for the 4 hours.Written 4 November 2024
- Maps115033365830 contributionsBusy start to any trip.Isabella was excellent. Not only the food knowledge but her general challenge of SF is amazing. I would say do this trip early in your holiday as there will be tons of take away you would like to do afterwards. 100% this is a great activity.Written 3 November 2024
- PortlandIHill0 contributionsEat your way through San FranDon’t go hungry. So much food. Great history along the way. Lots of spots to come back to in the future. Would recommend this to anyone. Does involve some walking (of course) but fairly flat in this part of the city. Guide was knowledgeable. Sometimes a little quiet but we stayed near the front. Took the kids as well and everyone loved it.Written 2 November 2024

Brian gave us an excellent history lesson and a delicious adventure in Chinatown. We learned a great deal about the city and architecture as well as tasted a great variety of foods we would’ve been too naive to order on our own. Brian was very animated, friendly and interactive. We would recommend this tour to anyone who can walk and eat well that would like to get to know the city a little better. Enjoy and thanks Brian!!

I travel a lot. And everywhere I go, I take a food tour. I find that it's a great way to see the sights, learn a little about a city, and try some fantastic food.
It turns out I was visiting San Francisco with 80 friends who wanted to join me on the food tour, so I contacted the owner, Tom, to set up a private tour for our group.
Tom was a dream to work with. I talked to him about what we wanted, and not only did he deliver that, he exceeded it. We were blown away by the quality of the tour guides, the quality of the food, the efficiency, everything. They were WONDERFUL.
If I could clone Tom and his tour guides, I would. And I will definitely take another food tour with Local Tastes of the City Tours.

Isabelle was great! We were greeted with hot green onion rolls from the New Hollywood Bakery and the tour only got better from there! There was an unbelievable amount of food with samples of many traditional Chinese dishes, ending with dinner at a restaurant. As we walked, we saw the places where locals hang out and and it was obvious that Isabelle has developed a great relationship with many of the local storekeepers. She had great stories about all the "firsts" found in San Francisco (so many I can't remember, but of course I remember that one was the first topless bar ...) and lots of anectdotal stories about the history of the area. I loved the fortune cookie factory - I had never thought about how they were made! I have been on several food (and non-food) walking tours in my travels around the world and this was as good as any of them. It was a terrific way to see one of San Francisco's many neighborhoods.

We had an amazing tour with Isabelle! So much food (half a pork sandwich, moon cake, onion roll, potstickers, fortune cookie, Peking duck & green beans, etc.) My favorite was tea tasting. Isabelle provided so much historical context and was an amazing guide. She lso made sure to accomodate members of our group that didn't eat pork or beef.

If you’re looking for a great introduction to the food, culture, and history of San Francisco’s Chinatown then look no further. This was 3.5 hours so we’ll spent and in terms of value for money a 11 out of 10. Brian was a super (!!) tour guide using facts and humor to craft an excellent narrative for the tour (Many thanks!). Make sure you go hungry because you’ll be well fed - we had rolls, dim sum, noodles, pot stickers, moon cake and Peking duck.
The piece de resistance to the tour was our last stop at Vital Tea-Leaf for a tasting of 6 different teas. The explanations about the teas’ benefits, and their tastes, were great, but 90+ year-old “Uncle (Mad Dog) G” provided the best sales pitch and comedy show ever! (Keep going Uncle!)
My only comment on the content of the tour is that the tour guide could add a few extra comments about how all the street art reflects the culture and history of Chinatown.
I look forward to trying some of their other “Local Tastes of the City Tours!”

Such a fun way to see San Francisco! We had a great time on our walking food tour with Isabella. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide - thoughtful, knowledgeable, funny. Isabella taught us so much about the history and people of Chinatown while feeding us yummy food along the way. Best pork buns ever, fun fortune cookie factory, oldest bakery in Chinatown were just a few of our stops. Would definitely recommend this outing for anyone wanting to dig a little deeper than just passing through this fascinating part of the city.

Well, that was fun! Love being a tourist in our own colorful, vibrant, endlessly fascinating City - particularly on a perfect day - what a treat! Our guide introduced us to a few gems that we have not found on our own numerous visits to Chinatown. Tea tasting was most educational with the very enthusiastic Mei, and the sneak-peak theater tour was a surprise. If you are familiar with basic Chinese food and culture, there are really no wow moments. But this is not intended to be a deep dive into Chinatown history. Still, there was enough info to spur additional research post tour. Recommended!

It starts with a reservation that we were lucky enough to get added to an already full group thanks to to an attentive owner named Tom!
Our tour guide was prompt, knowledgeable and informative and kept us moving through out the area. She brought us warm bread to start, then at the end, gave us a good luck charm and sweets, with so much more all throughout our tour. She was great!
The tastings she took us to provided a wide variety of Chinatown flavors. If only I could find them in Florida! Wow! The Tea tasting was especially nice and Tom sure put on a show of how to make proper Tea!
All in all, worth every dime you pay for this tour.

Brian is hands down the best tour guide ever (and I've been on dozens and dozens of tours in my life). Fun, engaging, knowledgeable and considerate. Walked and talked and ate our way through the history of Chinatown and it's obvious the store owners love and respect him greatly... they treat him like family and we became an extending of that family while visiting each place. Such a delightful experience.
A suggestion would be to indicate in the your description how much walking there will be... it was not as much as I was thinking for a 3 hour tour. It really only goes slowly around the compact area of Chinatown but not being familiar with the area, guests don't really know what to expect and may be hesitant to book a 3 hour walking tour thinking they will be walking for miles.
We loved everything about our tour with Brian and would highly recommend him and this tour to everyone!

We took the culinary walking tour of China town in San Francisco. Brian was our guide and he was informative, fun, and made the trip excellent. We enjoyed all of the history presented and some of the sidebars that only come with walking a city like San Francisco with a local like Brian. His unique flair added to the excitement to the tour. If you have an opportunity to book this tour, ask for Brian. You won’t regret it!

Hello - Are there any plant-based (vegan) options on the tour?
Written 4 August 2022
Yes, you can put in dietary restrictions when you book. Our guide was very cognizant of all restrictions.

I don't eat pork or shellfish. Are there options for me?
Written 8 April 2022
There are plenty options for you! They serve Peaking duck and vegetarian dim sums.

Are their options for foods, because I do not eat pork or beef so I was wondering if there are accommodations that still allow me to enjoy the tour?

I would love to do a 230PM tour in March (14-16) but not able to book that. Think that will update as we get closer? Thanks, Dan
