Myself, my husband and our 11 year old son did this tour and had a great time. The paddle wasn't difficult since the water was very calm but was a bit more strenuous when the wind was against us at times. The paddle is about 2 miles followed by a mile(ish) hike to the falls. We did the 7am tour and are grateful we did it early since the falls wasn't too packed when we got there. The way back we passed a lot of hikers and kayakers so I can only imagine how packed the falls gets as the day goes on. My son wore water shoes and my husband and I wore tennis shoes. Expect to get them wet from the few river crossings on the hike. We were grateful we had shoes on when we went into the waterfall area as well since it is pretty rocky. It was fun to climb on the rocks and go under/behind the falls. I almost didn't go in the falls but by son convinced me and I am glad I did. It was a pretty cool experience! The hike wasn't too muddy but I could imagine it would be if there was recent rainfall. The hike is more of a walk and is fairly level but sometimes a bit tactical with rocks and roots. It could be done by all ages for the most part. Bring some snacks to sit on the rocks at the falls and soak in the scenery while you eat. Our guide, Hawaiian Brian, was fun and very knowledgeable as he grew up on the island. I would recommend doing this with a guided tour like this rather than on your own. We came across a few groups that rented kayaks and didn't know where to stop with the kayaks and didn't know where the trail was. Plus the guides watch the rain gauges at the top of the mountain to know when it is safe to kayak and hike the area and know the escape route in the rare case of a flash flood.

This was one of the best things we did in Kauai on our family vacation. You start off by kayaking up the river about 45 minutes. You then dock your kayak and start off on the 1 mile hike as you make your way to the waterfall. You do trek through some mud and have to cross a stream, but the hike was relatively easy! You end up at a beautiful waterfall where you can eat your picnic lunch and swim!

We would highly recommend wearing water shoes with some traction/grips on the bottom (not the classic pull on, really thin ones). We ordered some for $30 a pair off of Amazon and wore them the whole way! Since you are stepping in mud, little puddles, and crossing a rocky stream, it was so much easier and more comfortable then wearing soaking wet running shoes and socks!

Our guide Kyle was awesome! He was so knowledgeable about all the plants and birds as we made our way through the tour. He even let us get up close with some of his bird friends as he fed them! When we got to the waterfall, Kyle made sure he helped all of the couples and families get group photos before we settled in for our lunch! During the whole tour Kyle was so friendly - asking people about where they are from and sharing some of his own stories.

This tour was amazing and if we ever come back to Kauai, we would do it again in a heartbeat! Thanks Kyle - from the Meyer Family (Toronto, Canada)

We are on our 20 year anniversary, and both first time Hawaii travelers. We wanted to start our vacation with an adventure. Man did we ever get it. The scenery driving around the island is an experience in and of itself, but when you go on this adventure and move closer to the heart of the island through the jungle you truly start to get a taste of paradisiacal beauty of the island.

Our tour guide, Brian, was absolutely fantastic. Very knowledgeable, personable, and takes the best pictures for you. He did everything within his power to make the adventure fun, knowledge based, and even personable.

Make sure and get there 15 minutes before start time so you can get your waterproof pack setup and get your instructions ahead so you start on time. We spent a total of approx. 4 1/2 hours on this adventure. The kayaking on the river was hard, but majestically. Such pretty landscapes and Brian’s stories made you forget about the fact you were your own motor. Once docked at the start of the hike we were treated to some great info and history about the hike and what we would see. It was very muddy, but it added to the adventure and fun. Brian took the time to stop and show us all of the different vegetation and quite a few of the landmarks along the trail. He had the birds literally flying in and eating out of his hands, and took the time to tell us about the species and tell a story how each was named. The payoff in the end at the waterfall was so worth the trek through the mud. I would highly recommend this adventure for anyone vacationing in Kauai. Ask for Brian as your guide and you will get an adventure experience that is second to none. If I could give this adventure a billion stars I would.

I would like to say the tour was awesome! I recommend bringing a hiking stick because if there is any rain it becomes extremely muddy and slippery. Many people in our group slipped or fell. But, the online special they run you have to be careful. I called in before booking and mentioned the special but it was showing for full price. The person told me that our price amount will change if we get a certain number of people to book and would be reimbursed the difference. The day of the tour I saw I was charged the full amount when online it was showing the special price. My tour guide called in and spoke with the owner and I was told I would be reimbursed the difference. A Week later, I still was not reimbursed. I called in to ask about it and was talking to the owner who told me he never said that to my tour guide and what the person said to me on the phone prior to booking was wrong. I felt like I was told that just to get us to book right away instead of waiting for the price to drop. I said that is unfair to the people who book in the beginning and then the owner began to talk condescending to me. So if you book online and see that it is full price and was told you would still get the special price don't believe it. Wait until you see the price drop and then book.

We took this tour a few days after the Christmas storms on the island. The water was high, and the mud was thick, but we had such a great time!! Brian was our guide, and was super fun. He knew a lot about the area, and pointed out trees, flowers, and had many fun stories about the area. He is the bird whisperer. He would call birds and they would land on his hand. He took a ton of fun pictures of us on his own phone, and airdropped them to us after the hike. Brian gave us tips on how to get behind the waterfall to experience being behind it. The waterfall was pretty cool, and the water is pleasant, but it was powerful. It will throw you off balance just trying to get through the water to it. Totally worth it!! Overall, the hike wasn't too hard (we had a group of 7, ranging in ages from 12-50), and the kayaking was a little tiring on the way back as we were paddling into the wind. We all wore water shoes, which were great for the mud, but if I were to do it again, I would probably get some teva type sandals with a little more support on the bottom. Brian had a few dry bags (backpacks that kept everything dry), that he let us use so our own bags didn't get muddy. This was such a fun excursion, and it was perfect!

My wife and I had a great time kayaking and hiking on this tour. Brian was an amazing guide and really made the hike fun by interacting with the wildlife and keeping everyone positive and laughing. As we went in the rainy season, it was very muddy and slippery but Brian provided walking sticks and it was actually pretty fun sloshing through the mud. Great experience and would definitely recommend it!

Hawaiian Brian was awesome! He made our trip so fun! He told great stories, taught us about plants and culture. He is incredibly down to earth and offered a hand any time that anyone needed it. This is a beautiful adventure on the Wailua River. We did the 7 a.m. trip and there were a handful of other groups at the falls, but there was also plenty of space for everyone. We highly recommend going out with Brian if you do this trip. He is the best!

Brian was an outstanding tour guide. The kayak and hike were wonderful. The falls were spectacular. Brian told great stories the entire trip. Most importantly we had 9 and 11 year old kids, and he kept them entertained and gave extra special care to our youngest, as the trek is not easy. Highly recommended!

What a fun adventure ! As others have said Brian is a great guide. Full of funny stories, songs and enthusiasm - Brian is so much better than the other guides we could hear explaining the sights. The other guides seemed to monotonously repeat the tour highlights but Brian made it fun. This tour was also less expensive than the others because you brought your own food and drink. The paddle and hike are strenuous and not suited to someone uncomfortable with slippery slopes, mud and a paddle 45 minutes each way. Brian also made it unnecessary for us to pull our phones out of the water proof bags. He shot dozens of great pictures for each couple then airdropped them to us at the conclusion.

The kayaking was easier on the way out. By the return trip, wind had picked up and required paddling into the wind. It was a good workout getting back to the starting point. The hiking portion was beautiful and rugged and required more effort than anticipated. At 70 years old, my husband and myself were the oldest ones in our group, and among the oldest of all the participants we encountered. Our guide, Brian, was entertaining and knowledgeable, as well as quite the photographer. We enjoyed this excursion and would recommend to all who love an adventurous outing.
