You will see giant aldabra tortoise and feeding them also old prison which was never used. The British First Minister of Zanzibar, Lloyd Mathews, purchased the island in 1893 and constructed a prison complex there. No prisoners were ever housed on the island and instead it became a quarantine station for yellow fever cases.

        Overpriced trip to sellers island
Overpriced trip with alot of salesmen on the island you go for lunch. The lunch was ok but everything is extra. Went to the three and took a picture of a cocnut crab and one of the guys there insisted that i had to pay for taking the picture. I told him to go …. Yourself. All the other people there felt thretend and payed up 5 dollars each for the pictures. The snorkeling was disepointing cause the visability is low, but if its your first time snorkeling is an ok experience i guess. The guide and the boatguys was cool people tho. But again, overpriced!!!

Lots of opportunities for getting in the water!
Full day trip. Swam at a sandbar, snorkelling x2 stops ( pretty good coral and fish but Blue Lagoon better if you only have time for 1 trip ) and swim at mangrove area. Great BBQ lunch and time for more swimming if you wished. Don't be put off by the number of people in each boat as you arrive, you spend most of the time in the water / on the beach. Everyone very friendly and it was well organised

        Highly recommend
My boyfriend and I spent 5 days in Zanzibar and loved it. We went on two days of tours with Zan Archpelago Tours. We booked the first one through TripAdvisor and our guide was Ishmael. He was fantastic - super knowledgeable, personable and fun. We booked the second tour with this operator via WhatsApp because we couldn’t find an existing itinerary that covered everything we wanted, so this tour operator prepared an itinerary based on our specific preferences. Ishmael was so great that we requested him again for our second day. All the activities were so well organized and a lot of fun. Highly recommend Zan Archpelago and specifically Ishmael.

        Amazing Zanzibar with Ismail
I have wanted to visit Zanzibar since I was a kid. We got to do it this summer. I contacted them via WhatsApp and created a custom itinerary including stone town tour, Nakupenda and Safari Blue. Ocho was our driver from the airport pickup to airport drop off. What a great driver. What an amazing trip. It was as planned and Ismail was our guide and it was perfect! I would highly recommend Ismail and the team. Don't hesitate, Do it !

Experience the spices and fruits on this mini tour
I have not been to the spice farms around Stone Town but being on the East coast, this place was the closest. A quite modest plot but contained many many examples of the spice and fruit grown in Zanzibar. It took around 90 minutes and ended with drinking fresh coconut ant being presented with woven palm adornments 😃We were knowledgeablely guided around by our guide and his two understudies. Interactive with lots to taste touch and smell.

Amazing trip to Prison island and I Nakupenda island
We booked a day trip to prison island and to Nakupenda island (sand bank). We paid extra for a transfer from our hotel near Kendwa Beach to stone town which was $80 including return. The boat took us to both islands. The tour guide at Prison island was very informative and helpful we also got to feed the tortoises. We went on to Nakupenda island which was beautiful ! where they prepared use a beautiful BBQ lunch which tasted incredible and we got to swim and take pictures. Definitely worth the money and was affordable. The staff was very friendly and helpful :)

Fantastic day trip to see highlights around Stone Town
Fantastic day with Ismael from Zan Archipelago tours. It was a long day but we loved each part to it. Ismael made the day fun and interesting with his knowledge and good humor. The day was paced just right, starting with the spice gram with a very tasty lunch and great information about individual spices and their uses followed by a visit to seethe large tortoises when the place was less busy in the afternoon. The final hour and a half in Stone Town was then at the end of the day and we particularly found the slave museum very interesting but tragic of course. We were a group of 4 adults and this trip is definitely worth the long day.

        great all encompassing tour.
This is a great tour to get in all the stops in one package. Mady was a great tour guide and very knowledgable. We had rain at the spice farm which is out of everyone's control but they were ready to accommodate us in shelters. the meal at the spice farm was delicious. The history provided on Zanzibar at the church stop and the information on the slave trade was very interesting.

        October 2023 Zanzibar Trip
Very informative excursion. The spice tour was great, our instructor made up a game while introducing each spice which made it more interesting. Mady did a great job retelling Zanzibars extensive history all while making it fun. Would recommend for the stone town and prison tour portion of the trip to bring a fan and bottle of water.

        Absolute BEST Walking Tour EVER!
We were so impressed with our guide, Mady’s deep and broad historical grasp of Zanzibar, its people and culture. Our favorite stops were Darajani market, and the old fort, as well as hanging out at Jaws Corner.

This tour is a great way to see Zanzibar in a full day. If you want to experience food, fauna, culture, history, the markets and the daily lives of the people in Zanzibar then this trip is for you. Our friendly tour guide Mady was very informative and well versed on the history and information of the Zanzibar region. You will not be disappointed and will only want to know more about Zanzibar and it’s rich history and culture.

        Highly recommended tour!
Great half a day tour, a must do while in Zanzibar. Very knowledgeable and friendly guide and driver! This group of 4 friends truly enjoyed exploring and tasting the Spice Farm, the walking tour around downtown Stonetown and Slave Market, and the boat tour to Prison Island to feed gigantic tortoise!

        Walking Stone Town
The tour guide, Ismael, was friendly and knowledgeable of the history. However, it is advisable not to take the tour at 16:30 as it run approximately 2 1/2 hours not 3 hours. Moreover, in the late afternoon/ evening, many of the vendors in the fish and spice markets had closed their workstations and the slave trade exhibit had also closed. Nonetheless, Ismael, made the time enjoyable.

        Good package
We started our day with Spice tour. We had the chance the see and taste a good bunch of daily used spices and fruits, never seen before in their original state. Farm guide was very knowledgeable and fun to be with. Lunch was excellent!!! In overall a great experience, everyone in the farm was friend and fan to interact. Before we leave, we were visited by red monkeys, as a bonus. A must do. Then we went to Stone Town, where we met out guide Mady. Not only he is knowledgeable, but he is genuinely interested and well read about history of Zanzibar and beyond. We had an excellent introduction on Zanzibar and Stone town history and a great discussion. Then we started our walk of the city where apart from the historic details, Mady shared some excellent tips on eating and shopping in the town. Finally we visited Prison Island. Although we understand that is a tourist attraction, we did not find anything interesting about it. At some point the whole island and its building was transformed to hotel and restaurants, which are closed now. All the buildings were unattended in a derelict state. Also, the tortoise seemed exhausted from all the patting and massaging of the tourists. In total, the tour is well build and a good package for a full day. Everyone is very knowledgeable and friendly and we really had a good time. Only complain I have for the tour operator is that they list House of Wonders and People's Palace Museum in their itinerary, although these site are closed for public since 2020. (House of Wonders collapsed in 2020 and People's Palace Museum is a work in progress).

        Worth checking out!
Started at the Spice farm, it's cool to go through the area but when we went, it had rained a little and it was muddy/dirty. I wasn't a fan of the extra people accompanying the tour, basically asking for tips with their gifts. Lunch and fruit trying is also included. Our guide was also very nice. Overall we had a good time here. It was just far too long, 3 hours for what should have been about an hour and a half, two hours tops. The stonetown walking tour was next, Mady was our guide. He was awesome. He knew so much about the history of Zanzibar and was very friendly. He gave us an execllent dinner recommendation and other tips of things to check out. Last stop was taking a boat across the water to prison island to see the tortoises. It was cool, but the excitement dies down pretty quickly, especially when you see the babies in their cage. Overall, the tours are fine. This company we booked with did a great job with transports, everything was on-time, everyone was very friendly and we learned a lot about the locals.

We were disappointed with the experience. The island is quite a depressing place. You arrive to an eyesore of a dilapidated building with a disused swimming pool, which our guide wasn’t really able to tell us much about. The prison itself is relatively unremarkable; a small courtyard with a few doors surrounding it which are all shut and locked. The turtles themselves are majestic creatures, but their environment is grotty. We left feeling very sorry for them. Donations for the turtles requested on the door. I scanned the donation book for the day and it stood at approximately $75 (at 2pm). Making no accusations, but the enclosure doesn’t suggest that amount of money is being invested back into the animals welfare. Boat crossing is not for the faint-hearted or safety conscious (we had a choppy sea, rickety boat, counted 2 life jackets between 12 people…). In summary, a very missable experience in my opinion.

The guide did not explain the history of prison island well. After verifying with Google it seemed the story was incorrect. We were left at the tortoise place alone while others had a guide. It felt as if we did not have a guide. Our tour was also shorter than expected - 3 hours we finished in 2 hours. No mineral water was provided and snorkeling was only proposed after we asked.

Not a bad trip, just a little too but touristy. The guide was fun and good. The crowds at the turtle park were a but too much for me. But then again maybe I expected something different having had the good fortune to have visited 28 years ago when there were only 6 of us on the island with the original turtles. They are still there but I felt sorry for them with so many people harassing them.

Absolutely wonderful trip. The boat trip across from stone town to prison island in itself is a really cool experience. Bumpy waves and wind make it scary but thrilling! The fresh breeze and amazing views from the boat are meditative.

You jump off the boat on the shores of Prison Island to the view of turquoise waters and white sand. You go up onto the island property to delve into beautiful a tortoise sanctuary , peacocks and baby antlers also can be spotted. The hotel here is home to a dark history and learning about it is very interesting.

This trip has something for everyone to appreciate. Kids enjoy walking around and feeding and playing with tortoises.

I recommend this trip it’s a very refreshing yet simple experience

It was quite an amazing experience to feed and pet giant tortoises. And the views were beautiful. But the rest of the visit was nothing to write home about.
Not worth 60 dollars pp. Find a local to take you there for (probably) cheaper, if you haggle.

Enjoyed very much the tour to the prison islands, beautiful relaxing boat ride, loved the vegetation and setting of the islands....interesting history about the prison which never was used as a prison...peacocks unfortunately lost some feathers..but tortoises were impressive, loved to feed them and see how they swallow the leaves without chewing! The water was calm which made for excellent snorkeling....colorful fishes and beautiful corals.
Yussuf was an excellent guide, very responsible, intelligent and with a very nice, welcoming personality! Would highly recommend him for your trip.

Turtles are definitely worth going to see, you get to hand feed the them too! I just wish they were looked after better. There was piece of plastic and rubbish scattered amongst their food on the floor.

Thanks for your contribution. The question of making this place clean is everyone's responsibility. At the same point Island operators should more accountable with this.
