Fantastic but moving day
We visited a local village to see how a community lives & to view traditional handicrafts etc.
It was very varied & interesting. The villagers were very friendly & the dancing was amazing. I would highly recommend the company & the tour.
To see people that were so happy despite having so little was very humbling. If you are able to, gifts of soap, notebooks etc (a guide can advise) are very use.
Our tour guide from Gorilla Trek Africa book this tour for us after our Gorilla trek. Our guide on 18 Aug Fernando was outstanding! It was wonderful to see an authentic village and meet some of the villagers. The best part is part of the tourist dollars goes back to the community.
Great day trip to the caves and scenic walk around the Volcanoes Park
Did a day trip with Beyond to go to the Musanze Caves and then do a scenic walk (2-3 hours) around the foothills of the Volcanoes National Park. Whole thing was well organised and great from start to finish. Pleasure to deal with, very helpful and accommodating. The guides, Simon and Fernando, were fantastic and I had a great time in the caves and on the walk. The walk was lovely with excellent views of the volcanoes, lots of interesting information about the local fauna and area. A long with a nice close up look at some of the local's farms and villages. All ending with a nice beer and tasty food at the beer garden on the foot of Mt Bisoke. If you're looking to check out the park / area without doing a Gorilla or Monkey trek or hiking to the top of a volcano, this is a great option.
A Pleasant Day Spent with Beyond the Gorillas Experience (Village Walk/Canoe Ride)
My guide, Simon, from BTGE, picked me and my tour guide from SOA from my hotel and we went for an early canoe ride. But before the canoe ride, we travelled to a place where we walked around the lake and saw people logging, birds, trees and the hills. Such a serene place to visit in the early morning as the reflection of the trees outline the lake. It was a little foggy, but you can have a relaxing walk to just view nature. We head out to where our boat picked us up and we went to a resort where our canoe is located. A student from the local school came with us as he was doing his practicum hours. He was such a nice young man. So off to ride the boat on this beautiful lake, fishermen were out there and you can view different birds along the way. The canoe was waiting for us once we arrived at this resort (the resort is still in the process of being developed, but I'm pretty sure it would be a beautiful resort once it's completed). Canoe ride was pleasantly refreshing as I was able to see different birds. While canoeing, I scented an aroma of something good. I told Simon we needed to eat lunch. The beauty of this trip is that Simon hurriedly called the resort and asked to have lunch ready for us. Fried Tilapia was on the menu. I love the spontaneity of this trip. This was not part of the trip but Simon was able to arrange for us to have lunch after our canoe ride. The resort prepared our lunch and of course, Munzig was the beverage to highlight the meal. After our canoe ride, we went for the village walk. We met another guy from BTGE who shared with us different local instruments and other stuff from the village. I learned basket weaving from amazing women, met another woman who opened her house for me to view, walked among so many Irish potatoes, met so many children from the village, man making basket for honey and heard the drums while we were walking. Towards the end, there were a group of talented men and women performing with drums, singing and dancing. What a treat! I so love this tour as I experienced the cultural performance of this group and a gentleman who used his local instrument and started singing. People from the village all gathered around, children sat on the ground to enjoy this performance. I say "bravo" to the excellent performance I experience. I recommend that people who visit Musanze to book a tour with BTGE (Village Walk) in order to see the beauty of the village and the people. At the end, it was a day well spent.
Unique hiking experience
My girlfriend and I went hiking Mont Kabuye with Beyond The Gorilla Experience. Theodore, the manager, was very helpful and responsive for the booking, he answered all our questions and provided us with all the information we needed to plan our hike. Our guide Ferdinand was wonderful, he shared some fascinating facts about the local culture, he was very attentive to our needs and even helped us buy some local banana beer on our way back. The hike itself was a truly unique experience!
Beyond the gorillas offers very professional and friendly services. We spend a lot of time with them and they are truly wonderful. The scenic walk around the vulcanos is not just a scenic walk, it also shows a lot about the agricultural life in this area. Janviere is an amazing guide! Rarely met someone that is so knowledgeable about the area and still very eager to learn more!! If you look for the kinda tour that offers experienced guides that tell you what you want to know in a natural way, this is the place to go! Will definitely use their services again elsewhere in the country. Murakoze cyane
Amazing, challenging Mt. Karisimbi experience!
My family recently did a 2-day overnight hike up Mt. Karisimbi. When we booked our permits with RDB, they recommended Beyond the Gorillas Experience to be our outfitter. Theodore, the founder and head of the company, was very professional, responsive, and helpful as we planned the details (including roundtrip transportation from Kigali).
We were a group of 7 adults of varying ages and levels of fitness. For most of us, the hike was quite difficult. We spent most of the hike shin-deep in mud, which is what made it so strenuous (if the trail was dry, it would’ve been much easier). Thank goodness for our team of porters, arranged by Beyond the Gorillas Experience, who not only carried all of our bags, food, tents, etc., but also helped many of us up the mountain – they were amazing.
It took us about twice as long as expected to reach the overnight camp – we arrived just before sundown. The next morning, only three of us proceeded from the campsite to the summit.
Beyond the Gorillas arranged for our camping equipment, which was of good quality (we brought our own sleeping bag liners; wished we’d each brought an inflatable camping pillow, ear plugs and extra layers for the chilly night!) Meals were basic but tasty, particularly after a long day first day – and our team of porters spontaneously serenaded us with songs around the campfire before dinner. Views of Mt. Bisoke and the other volcanos from both the campsite and the summit were breathtaking! We also caught a view of mountain gorillas on the way up!
Make sure you have plenty of water and snacks for both days. We ran out of water on the second day, and one member of our group became seriously dehydrated on the hike down. Fortunately, we were greeted by the Beyond the Gorillas Experience team with lunch, drinks, and foot massages upon our return.
Even though it was more challenging than we’d bargained for, it was a fun, once-in-a-lifetime experience. We’re grateful to Theodore and his team for helping us to create wonderful memories!
Hiking around volcanoes national park and mount Kabuye
Amazing experience with stunning landscapes (when not foggy) ! Ferdinand, Patrick and Francis are great guides, always willing to share their knowledge on birds, agriculture and Rwandan culture.
Beyond the Gorillas - fantastic option for lone travellers
My friend and I arrived in Masanze knowing we wanted to see Golden Monkeys and hike a volcano but otherwise had no idea how to organise it. After enquiring during our lunch at Migano cafe (superb place for lunch and wifi!) we were immediately introduced to Theodore from Beyond the Gorillas who was incredibly helpful and within minutes had arranged our itinerary for us. This involved being picked up at our hostel the next day (very punctually) by our super driver Gabriel who ensured we were sorted with permits, correct hiking gear and plenty of drinking water on both days. (Lunch is also provided if required). After we had completed activities, Gabriel was waiting with the car to take us back our hostel, going above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable.
After we had completed both activities, we were taken to meet Beyond the Gorillas staff to discuss our experience and asked if we had any recommendations to improve the service as we had lunch.
We are budget lone traveller who were not particularly organised or prepared before arriving... after asking around for other companies and prices etc we both agree that Beyond the Gorillas offer fantastic service and value for money, by taking all of the stress out of the situation - we really can not recommend them enough!! Thank you so much for making our time in Muasanze truly wonderful!
Amazing Bisoke hike and Golden Monkey trek with Beyond the Gorillas!
My friend and I had an incredible experience with Beyond the Gorillas. We went during the rainy season in May as lone budget backpackers and were initially a little confused as to how to arrange the trekking and seeing the monkeys on a budget. After enquiring with Migano Cafe (an excellent spot for lunch!) in Masanze, we were introduced to Theodore who arrived within 5 minutes to answer all our questions. He provided us with transport from our hostel to the Headquarters to buy our park permits and then onwards to the starting point of the treks both days (4x4 required as the terrain is very rocky!). We were also provided with good trekking shoes (essential), waterproof trousers, jackets, socks and gaters in addition to as much water as we wanted. Our driver Gabriel would then be waiting each day when we finished the activity to drop us back at our accomodation. He was always very punctual and helpful. He really went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed-driving us to multiple cash points when we had trouble with the card machines (much easier to pay in cash/USD for everything!!) and helping us to communicate with hostel staff when we had a problem with accomodation (above and beyond their job description). Beyond the Gorillas really helped to take the stress out of organising something which could be logistically tough! It is very clear that all company members just want their clients to have the best experience possible. Definitely recommend!

Wonderful, Professional, a Must Do During Your Rwanda Visit
We could not have been more impressed with Theo and our day spent with Beyond the Gorillas. After trekking to see the gorillas and golden monkeys we heard about Beyond the Gorillas and spent a day learning about traditional Rwandan music, crafts, ect. visited a village and visited a day school to watch traditional dance and hear traditional music. We were so happy we found this before leaving Muzanse. It was a wonderful look at the lives of the local people and traditions which make up the area and the country. Theo and company are very knowledgeable and professional and they do amazing work within their communities, using tourist dollars to really benefit the local people. Adding one (or more) of Beyond the Gorillas many activities is a must during your Rwanda visit.
Great experience in Muzanse
We did the scenic walking and the authentic village tours with Janviere and they were really good. She was kind and helpful and provided us with interesting information. We totally recommend them.

No visit to Musanze without Beyond the Gorillas Experience
When I first visited Musanze several years ago I totally failed to understand why this beautiful area was not promoted beyond the gorillas. And then I discovered Beyond the Gorillas Experience. Attracted by the name I started booking tours. And I have done so for many years now. BGE is knowledgeable, flexible and customer-oriented. And on top of that the organization gives back to the local community. I highly recommend the village walk, the scenic walk and the boat tour on Lake Ruhondo. Guests of mine have also done the Bisoke hike and were equally enthusiastic. Highly, highly recommended
It was fantastic.it was a quite impressive experience. The people are good and helpful.the guide also was very informative.hopefully we will come back for another experience
