What to expect
Explore the sunny shores near Santa Barbara during this kayaking adventure along the coast of Refugio State Beach. This family-friendly, laid-back adventure is a great way to scout for Pacific Ocean marine life while enjoying the legendary scenery of the California coast. Head to Refugio State Beach in the morning for the start of your kayaking trip. Before climbing into your boat you’ll get outfitted with gear and provide a safety lesson, paddling demonstration, and explanation of how to get in and out. Once you’re feeling ready, continue on for the journey along the shore of this beautiful area. As you paddle, your guide will stop to point out marine life like pristine underwater kelp and some of the more than 1,500 species of plants and animals that call this state preserve home. If you’re particularly lucky, you’ll also see some of Refugio State Beach’s dolphin residents. Enjoy lunch on a secluded beach before hitting the water again for the ride back, during which you’ll play a series of fun kayak games and challenges to keep things interesting.

Cool adventure!
Apr 2021 • Couples
It was a neat adventure.
You do need to work for it, however! It can get pretty cold and windy with choppy waters. The kayaks and the guides made us feel very safe, however. Our guide was awesome! Her enthusiasm was infectious. We saw a couple of seals, several different bird species, including a bald eagle. The caves were pretty awesome! The only downfall would be the shuffling around with so many people. It felt like we were cats being herded. But I guess that is part of the national Park experience.

kayak tour from Refugio State Beach

Fun trip with Pierce, our excellent guide! He offered information about different sea life, plants and the surrounding areas of coastline. A delicious lunch was provided at a secluded beach stop. Pierce ensured that our launch into the ocean and our landings on the beach were supervised and safe. We would recommend this "adventure" to everyone!

Great trip for families!!
We had a fantastic day on the water with Laird and Pat. They were very attentive to our group - we were two adults and two kids (9,12) - making sure we had all the equipment we needed, sticking with us when we needed help with our seats and jackets, and sharing with us their expertise on everything from marine wildlife (we saw harbor seals and dolphins!!) to other tours in the area with a smile. The pace was totally relaxing, but not boring (I’m a more experienced paddler and it was great). We had surfed with the same company two days before, also a great experience. I highly recommend it!!!

Amazing Kayacking Experience Along Beautiful Santa Barbara Coastline
Apr 2018 • Couples
My husband and I had an adventure weekend planned for celebrations and had one of the best experiences working with the team and planning an excursion exploring Sea Caves. Kim helped us with logistics, and was constantly in touch with spring weather updates and suggested Refugio State Beach as a better option when the weather appeared too windy for sea cave exploration. We are so glad we visited Refugio State Beach!! Scott and Rachel were excellent guides giving great instruction for us as intermediate kayakers, and told us all about the history and ecology of the area along the way. 5 minutes after launching our kayak and heading into the waves, we were greeted by a gray whale no more than 25 yards away! We were very excited and continued to explore the kelp forest and learn about the Kelp Forest Trail used by the native people thousands of years ago. Scott and Kim were thoroughly delightful, engaged, and readily shared all of their knowledge and enthusiasm. We can't wait to return next year for another great adventure!!
