About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Sunshine509284587080 contributionsAmazing tourOur stay in Bhutan was amazing and not only because it is an amazing country. The stay was wonderful thanks to Maebar Travel and I can say with confidence that it is the best travel agency in Bhutan and even in the world. First of all, they are incredibly professional and, apart from their professionalism, they are really incredibly nice and friendly people. The owner of Maebar Travel took us out for dinner so he could get to know us better. It was very nice because it gives us the feeling of being a very welcome guest in Bhutan. We had a wonderful conversation about our lives, the culture of the country and life in Bhutan. Thanks to our guide and driver for everything. It was a great pleasure to meet you both. Maebar travel is very flexible, because they organized a program that fit our needs 100%, namely it was rich in cultural experiences. We stayed overnight with a local family and also with monks in a monastery. In addition, we had a meditation session with the monks. It was an amazing experience. Also the opportunity to participate in their local life and morning prayers at 5 am was amazing. Thanks to our guide, we were able to experience the best trekking of our lives while climbing the Tiger Nest temple. We set off early in the morning when there weren't many people on the trail yet. The people we met were going to a cafe for a break, while we went further up thanks to the recommendation of our guide. When we reached the temple, there was no one there except us. It was an amazing experience because in this way you can really feel the spirit of this place. It was amazing. On the way back, we met a lot of people just going towards the temple. They certainly didn't have the opportunity to go through this place alone. In the Temple of Fertility I had the opportunity to experience my own mantra and the spirituality of Buddhist beliefs thanks to our guide who asked the monks for a mantra for me. Absolutely everything was tailored to our requirements and we experienced more than we could have expected. We can really recommend Maebar Travel to everyone - you won't find a better travel agency anywhere. Thank you for a wonderful trip to Bhutan and we wish you all the best. - Dreamer392065194790 contributionsOur wonderful cultural tour of BhutanOur 9-day discovery of Bhutan, tailor-made for us by Maebar Travel, wouldn’t have been the huge success it was without our knowledgeable guide, Karchung, and our skilled driver, Leki. Karchung guided us through the visits of beautiful monasteries and important cultural sites, always ready to answer our questions, and going beyond to give us a glimpse into the everyday life of the Bhutanese. He has a vast understanding of the history and the culture of this ancient Buddhist country. Bhutan is mountainous, and the roads are windy at times, but Leki’s adept driving made the car journey comfortable for us. With friendly locals, grand vistas and an unspoilt countryside, Bhutan will stay forever in our hearts!Written 20 October 2024
- KellyStange0 contributionsFantastic 7-Day tour with Maebar TravelJust returned from a 7 day tour organized by Maebar Travel and led by our guide, Tshering “Spring.” My friend and I didn’t have time to do a lot of research but Tsenrig of Maebar took care of everything. We explained our primary interests and he tailored the trip to our wishes. He’s detail-oriented and responsive. Everything exceeded our best expectations. Our guide was the other critical half of the equation. One of our goals was hiking - Tshering always had “another mile” planned out for us. He answered my 800 questions about Buddhism, agriculture in Bhutan, plants, and animals. His patience and knowledge are legendary. He took photos for us and even produced a short video of the trip. We never felt rushed - he and our fearless driver were always early and prepared to go on the next adventure. Overall - I fully recommend this tour agent and guide. They are a boutique operation and can seamlessly adapt to your interests while providing a deep knowledge of the country and culture.Written 26 April 2024
- jimbo83330 contributionsWonderful tour of western and central Bhutan! We did a 10 day cultural visit with hiking. This was a well rounded tour of Bhutan by a fascinating guide and great driver. Maebar travel encourages prior call to customize the trip and were very accommodating. The hotels were all better than expected and views from the room were great! The guide was a yak herder previously and quite interesting. I heartily recommend this agency.Written 25 April 2024
- Meghna B0 contributionsExcellent and TrustworthyHad a great time with Maebar Travel! Initially I was a bit skeptical considering there were not too many options for tour companies with written reviews and when I contacted Maebar it appeared that I would need to do a bank transfer as per Bhutanese government policy. However, all of these suspicions were unfound. I got picked up from the airport on time and had a great 5 days with my tour guide and driver. Extremely accommodating. The tour was organized very well. Ideally there could have been more activities but if I had mentioned this to them earlier, they would have accommodated me surely. This is a must visit place for everyone, could not recommend Bhutan more highly. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before.Written 2 July 2023
- 39mariagraziam0 contributionsAmazing BhutanJust come back from a 8 days trip in Bhuthan with Maebar travel. One of the most beautiful trip I had. Tsering, the owner of the company, has been able to organise an itinerary that allowed us to discover the Bhutanese culture, religion, nature and gastronomy even in the short time we had. Dorji (our guide) and Dechen (our driver) were amazing. They performed their job very professionally but at the same time they were great company and allowed us to make some small change to the plan to fit our requests. By the end of trip we felt like having a road trip with friends! I knew almost nothing about the country but Dorji answer every single question I had (and they were a lot). Also the Bhutanese people were all super kind and the food was very good! Overall Bhuthan surprised me in a very positive way! A highly recommended trip and if you plan to go just trust Maebar travel. You will not be disappointed!Written 11 April 2023
- Cruiser324848331370 contributionsGreat tours, great staffI really enjoyed my tour. Both my guide and driver were wonderful, however as a solo on a group tour that no one else booked it wasn't what I was after (not the company's fault). The guide was extremely thorough, and adapted the meals to suit my request for more local cuisine, and was excellent when I had a bad dizzy spell when hiking. The before tour info was very good and helpful, extremely responsive although it was a bit strange when I was still getting text messages randomly after the tour had finished. I feel like the service and hotels were of outstanding quality, and my only issue is really with the way the country forces you to take organised tours where possible and that results in a tour where you don't feel like you see anything genuine, rather very touristy places that all the other tourists are at. It would be nice if tours could allow staff to join the passengers at meals etc so solo travellers don't end up alone most of the time.Written 3 February 2020
- SojuTraveller0 contributionsNovember 2019 visit to Bueatiful Bhutan with Maebar TravelI took a solo 11 day cultural tour with Maebar in November 2019 travelling to locations between the Haa valley, Paro, Thimphu, Phobjika valley and out to Bumthang. I found Bhutan to be a beautiful, peaceful & tranquil country, which largely retains it's charm by resisting a lot of the changes brought by modernisation. The roads can become a little rough in some areas, meaning travel over seemingly short distances can take a long time, but the dramatic mountains and valleys are so stunning that I didn't mind slowing to a crawl. Driving over Bhutan's mountain roads bring changes in scenery due to the different vegetation at different elevations, so even on my 11 day tour I did not get bored of the changing view out of the car window. Hotels were all really nice, mostly beutiful wooden architecture which has a different feel than the concrete box hotels I am used to in many countries - some of them are in fairly remote locations meaning there is not really anywhere to go in the evening. Not all of the hotels have TV, but internet was always available. However, it pays to have a good book. I found that food at restaurants along my travels was all good, but tended to cater for the international traveller. Traditional Bhutanese cuisine can be quite spicy with heavy use of chillies and I found there seemed to be a concern about serving these dishes to tourists, but I like spicy food and my guide was often able to obtain 'real' Bhutanese dishes for me. My guide Tshering ("Spring") was full of facts - very knowledgeable of Bhuddism and was able to tell me great detail of the tales depicted in paintings in the monastaries, he also recounted a lot of the history of Bhutan and it's royal family, as well as being familiar with a lot of the trees and plants along the hikes that we took. He had a good sense of humour even on the days that had quite an early morning start! My driver Tenzin always made me feel in safe hands, he tackled the winding mountain roads and the other cars along them with confidence and expertise from many years of experience. It was great that he also joined us for the hike up from Chele la pass rather than wait in the car for our return. Maebar arranged for me to go rafting and also get out on a mountain bike along a nice country road following the river out of Thumpu - I felt that there were good options for flexibility if I wanted to switch up the itinerary. I managed to get out to Karaoke, a nightclub, and a dreyang. The owner, Tsenrig, even took me out for dinner one evening, which was a great personal touch. Thanks to all at Maebar for making my trip to Bhutan such a fantastic and memorable experience.Written 12 January 2020
- HeleneR7810 contributionsProfessional and reliable tour companyA professional company, flexible and reliable. Karchung and Karma were a pleasure to spend the tour days with. Karchung was a very knowledgeable guide and Karma a safe driver, who was flexible enough to stop frequently whenever i wanted to take a photo! I liked the fact that the schedule was flexible so i could see the best places to visit, at the best times of the day and with the advantage of favourable weather! I learnt a lot about the wonderfully kind people of Bhutan. The scenery is a bonus.Written 17 November 2019
- joeyc7100 contributionsGreat Guide and DriverAwesome experience with Maebar Travel! Well planned itinerary accompanied by experienced guide and driver. A great team to be showing us the best of Bhutan on only with the tourist sites, also super friendly culture. I would highly recommend exploring Bhutan with Maebar Travel.Written 2 March 2019
- Explore4313280 contributionsCustomized trip BhutangMaebar travel superseded my expectations. Every detail of the itinerary was met. My guide Tshering and Drivers Dr Dawa and Tenzin made this the best international trip I’ve ever had. Bhutan is breathtaking and “Happiness” is not just a motto. The people in this country are kind, respectful and lovely souls. The scenery will take your breath away at every turn.Written 26 February 2019
- Claire P0 contributionsExcellent tour guide and driver! It was our first trip to Bhutan for my hubby and myself and the whole trip was well planned and memorable. Tshering Jamtsho was an experienced and knowledgeable guide who has gave detail explanation of each cultural visit. He is also an experienced trekker who took great care of us during each of the trekking. During these 6 days together, we shared many memorable and happy moments which is magical and unbelievable. Driver Tenzin is also a very experienced driver and we know we are in good hands throughout the trip. Although he looked strict during the first few days, but after getting to know him better, we realised he is also a fun loving guy who will always gave a contagious laughter each time. We will certainly be back soon. :)Written 13 February 2019
- Paul M0 contributionsExcellent Service!I booked my tour with Maebar Travel because out of the 4 tour companies I contacted they put together the most professional itinerary which they tailored to include the experiences I wanted. They were also very responsive and easy to work with. When I broke my ankle and had to postpone my trip, they were very understanding and took care of everything so that I could rebook with them without any cancellation fees (except for a $25 airfare rebooking fee). The guides that we had were very knowledgable, professional, and fun. Bhutan is a destination that for some is a trip of a lifetime. I highly recommend Maebar Travel to ensure a smooth trip filled with wonderful memories.Written 25 January 2019
- Mbeith0 contributionsGreat guide and driverWe enjoyed a comprehensive 10 day tour of Bhutan with maebar travel. The guide was very informed. We were interested in birdwatching and saw over 50 species. The vehicle was comfortable with good viewing skylights. Our driver was very good and we always felt safe and he understood our humor! Bhutan is an incredibly beautiful place with such an interesting history. The hotels we stayed in were all very nice. Three meals a day is a lot to eat.Written 8 January 2019

After doing some research, I booked a Tour directly with Tsenrig and I didn’t regret it one second. He adjusted the itinerary of a typical week tour according to my preferences since I wanted to do more hikes and less drive-by sights.
Upon my arrival in Paro, Karchung picked my up and we went straight to the Tigernest. The hike to Bundrak was on the next day - maybe it’s better to do this hike a little later since the altitude is quite challenging. But the views over Paro valley are spectacular and the hike is well worth the effort. The Hotel in Thimphu was the only thing which was a little disappointing, all other Hotels were very welcoming and had nice views. Karchung (my guide) was also great and explained a lot about Buddhism and local live; he even invited me to his home in Bumthang where we had self-prepared Ara. In summary, I really enjoyed my time in Bhutan and even though traveling to Bhutan may seem pricy (given visa cost), the tour with a personal guide and driver accompanying me for the entire time is well with the money. I would book again with Tsenrig anytime.

Bhutan is very special according to landmarks, architecture, energy and of course the people. A five to six days tour with Maebar Travel is the perfect plan to discover this beautiful country according to your interests (I did six days, which was perfect for me).
I had a very good feeling doing the trip with Maebar Travel from the first message sent. Tsenrig is a very experienced and good organized operator (doing this for many years) and took care of everything and my indivual needs as I was booking the tour last-minute with him.
Especially I want to point out the warm, kind as well as the very professional behavior of the guide and the driver. They were giving their best making my stay extraordinary and giving insights to Bhutans people aswell!
Hotels and food was best you can get for this price range.
Go to Bhutan, go with Maebar Travel!!!

We had a wonderful overall experience with Maebar travel. Before the tour started, Palden Tsenrig patiently explained everything and helped with securing the flight tickets. When we arrived in the country, our guide, Kezang Nima, and driver, Sonam Letho, were very friendly and accommodating and took great care of us. We really enjoyed the beautiful country of Bhutan, its mountains, monasteries, fortresses and food and would definitely recommend this agency.

My husband and I had such a good time in Bhutan.
It's a beautiful country with very lovely people.
Maebar Travel were fantastic. The guide Mr Karchung and our driver were very kind, attentive, and knowledgeable and would go out of their way to make it a wonderful trip for our honeymoon.
The company is much more competitively priced than other companies on the market, and we liked that the money was going back into the community.
Thank you, Mr Karchung and to our driver for making this a once in a lifetime experience for us.

I loved my tour from beginning to end: Tsering went out of his way to make sure he knew what I wanted and tailored my itinerary accordingly. As a result, I did a bit of everything: hiked up to and stayed at a monastery, visited the Punakha fort, the national museum and a brewery. And of course the fab Tiger’s Nest. Highly recommended!
