- Stay250031798830 contributionsCape of good hope and boulders beach penguinsWe traveled with Horea, Akira and Friday who provided lovely service and information. The views were great, I greatly recommend doing this trip on a sunny day and I also recommend doing the 45-minute hike, it is well worth it and not particularly difficult. There are other tours that include food which this tour did not, however we didn’t mind because of the restaurant at the lunch stop. It was great food and service there as well as an amazing view if you sit outside. The penguins were lovely to see because they weren’t trapped in any way. Unfortunately the bus smelled a bit badly, probably fumes, which made me a bit nauseous. Otherwise I have no complaints.Written 24 March 2025

First time in SA and were advised to visit winelands. We looked at various offers and ended up choosing the Hop on Hop off tour for around £30 each.
We were picked up outside our hotel by coach (comfortable, air con and free WiFi on board). Once at the tram station we eventually got to understand what the process was to visit the estates. Lots of staff there to assist, and once at the estates it was an amazing way to spend a day. The estate reps are attentive and some of them very knowledgeable. The wine is really cheap and the measures are good. Most estates provide platters to go with your wine, and we found these to be really tasty. You get to meet new people on the way, which makes it an even more enjoyable experience.
On the downside, the ‘free’ wine on the bus is no more than a thimble full, and should really be scrapped, as there’s plenty to drink once you get to the estates. I don’t really understand why they do this. Also, the day is very long, and in my humble opinion, there should be an option to return to the city at around 2pm, as it’s a really long day, and lunchtime drinking takes its toll. Leaving the hotel at 7.45am and not returning until 6.30pm is a bit much.
Overall I would highly recommend this tour, and we were so impressed that we’ve booked on the Cape Point and penguin tour.

This was the highlight of my holiday. I booked this trip with my two sisters whom I have not seen for two years. The farms we visited were beautiful, full of history and character. We had breakfast on Vrede and Rus farm. We visited three more farms, Boschendal being the biggest and oldest farm. We had wine tasting on each of the remaining three farms. It is affordable and I would recommend you do wine tasting on all the farms. The tram is a familiar site in that area and all the staff make sure that all visitors are well informed about tram times and the history of the wine lands. Don't forget to drink water between the wine tasting sessions.
We took the bus from Cape Town to Franschoek which is about an hour's drive.
We were delayed on one of the farms but the staff made sure we would have a ride to the next farm. The tram bus driver also gave us extra time on the last farm before he picked us up. It was quite an enjoyable day.

A great way to choose a vineyard or two (or three or four!) to visit and be dropped off right at the door.
Plenty of choice of route too.
We stopped at Boschendal and Camberley as part of the Navy line.
Boschendal being a big enterprise and more expensive, Camberley being a more intimate and cheaper option which we both enjoyed the most.
The staff on the Tram and buses are great and definitely add to the experience.
The only gripe I would have is the stingy portion of wine given outwhen you get on the Tram. Only just a mouthful.
Other than that a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Beautiful wine farms, but wine tasting is not included.
Boschendal was fully booked and couldn't help anyone on our tour with lunch. Guests should be advised to go there first as it's really busy.
Also know, that for South Africans this is a very expensive wine farm, with most items severely overpriced.
The tour is fun and takes about 9 hours so prepare for that.

Thanks for your feedback, which we will pass on the tram operator.
It takes 1h to drive from Cape Town to Franschhoek and the same to get back, yes it is a full day tour, as advertised.
If you feel that the tastings are expensive, May I suggest you try our 3 regions wine tour next time, which we operate with our own staff start to finish and includes 3 curated wine experiences

Totally disappointing experience. The only reason we booked was to go on the tram but when our bus arrived in Franschoek they informed us that the tram had broken down so they would be using busses. If they had told us that before we left we would have canceled.
It was very confusing from then on and we were
dropped off at wine farms having no idea of what we could expect there besides just a wine tasting. We didn't get to see any wine being made and just sat around waiting to be picked up before repeating the process.
At Allee Blu the wine tasting was very well done but at Boschendal it was very rushed and the guy just put all the wines in front of us and quickly ran through what they were then left us to taste them on our own.
On our ticket it said it included one free wine tasting but when I asked about it later in the day they said it could only be done on the tram. No offer to give us a voucher for a wine tasting and no explanation until I asked.
We paid R700 per person and it would have been far better if we had driven there ourselves.
Though all the staff were very friendly and tried to be helpful it was extremely unprofessional and a total waste of time and money. They should have offered to refund us instead of taking us out there.

Hello Colleen.
We don't operate the tram. We sell a tour that includes the wine tram operated by a third party. You travelled on Friday 10/2. The tram broke down that same morning at short notice, without giving any warning. This happened whilst you were on our coach on the way to Franschhoek. So accept our apology for not letting you know any earlier.
You may also remember the tram staff coming onto our bus and announcing a few things. One was that the tram was regrettably out of action. Another was that they offered you an alternative line (Pink/Grey) which still had an operational tram. Several of our guests opted to change line (different wine estates, same concept). You and others decided to remain on the Burgundy/Navy line, which operated as normal on the open tram buses, but without the leg on the actual tram. Let’s remember that the tram service consists of a hop on hop off circular service stopping at up to 8 Wine estates. Only the leg from the tram station to the first estate is by tram. The rest is on tram buses anyway, as many estates are not located on the railway line.
With regards to the missed Wine tasting. The tour is sold as including: "Taste some wine on the tram". This is true and includes 1 sample size glass whilst on the tram. They were unable to supply this as neither their station nor their buses are licensed to serve alcohol. This 1 sample glass is not equivalent to an estate tasting and given the short notice between the tram breaking and your arrival, likely left little time for them to arrange any alternative.
I will happily pass all your wine estate related comments on to the tram team for them to discuss with their partners.
All things considered I actually thought they did incredibly well to save the day and short of the 1 tram leg, you got what you paid for. I am not sure how you would have handled things any better given the circumstances.
I am sorry we could not meet your expectations on this day, but rest assured, it was not for a lack of trying.
I hope we can get another opportunity to take you on another tour that perhaps its more to your liking.

The activity is very interesting because it allows you to visit the wine estates near Cape Town. However, the fact that no guide speaks French and that no instructions are in French makes it complicated for foreigners who speak this language and not very good English.
Furthermore, the route is not very clear. You are given leaflets on the bus without clearly explaining to you that depending on the color of the badge given to you, you will have to follow the corresponding circuit or why one circuit has been assigned to you rather than another.
We would also have liked to be able to actually stop at a vineyard and have someone explain to us how the grapes are grown and how the picking takes place then the maceration, etc.
In short, the idea is good but there are still many points to improve.

Using City sightseeing service for the wine tour has both positive and negative aspects. The bus collects you from the waterfront (or other locations) at 9 am which allows everyone to drink and enjoy the day in franchoek. there is also really interesting information on the bus on the way up to Franchoek. The disadvantage is that you don't have to full day in Franchoek as you would if you drove yourself. We managed 3 wine farms, but doing 4 is possible. I have done the wine tram independently in the past and we did 6 wine farms in one day, but stayed the night in franschoek. All in all I would say it was worth it that no one had to drive and we still had a fantastic time at the three wine farms

Brilliant experience amazing customer care. Brilliantly coordinated, strong pastoral care by teams and magically atmospheric. Handled a personal incident of a party of 8 blocking out access to the top of the tram superbly, and reacted swiftly and with care to the verbal abuse bestowed by them on me when I challenged their attempts to reserve out a full section of the tram for others yet to board. Janene in particular is amazing. You made my day memorable and didn't allow bullies to ruin it for me!

Brilliant day out! Picked up by one of the City Sightseeing buses from the Two Oceans Aquarium, on time (0830). Arrived just after an hour, where the bus played a very informative audio of the areas we passed. The Wine tram people hopped on the bus when we arrived and gave our a slightly better timetable and info on the vineyards. We were told we were on the Burgandy line when we arrived. If you had made reservations for vineyards on other lines, I’m not sure what you would have done. We picked Plaisir as our first stop, followed by Boschendal, followed by Bartinney. Plaisir was lovely, great setting, snacks, coffees, food available with seemingly no need to book. Boschendal has a 10min bus ride to thr vineyard so the guide’s recommended staying for 2 slots. Bookings were required for picnics etc. the picnic area was in a diff place to the wine tasting-very spread out! Bartinney was the best (IMO), the setting was gorgeous really high up, quite small and very peaceful. We wish we allocated two hours for this place, where we only had 1 for the last stop!! The facility to leave wines with the bus pick up was great, saved dragging around the wines you had purchased along the way!! Overall, a really great day! We didn’t plan the route we were going to take until the bus ride over, so don’t panic if you’ve not booked. Highly recommend for a wine lovers day out, in the most beautiful setting!!!!

Absolutely beyond my expectations! From the food to the knowledge to the picturesque surroundings, friendly people, ridiculously cheap excellent wines, and the ultimate luxurious experience, this was a trip showcasing the best of what South Africa has to offer. I absolutely loved it, in spite of the rainy weather, thank you City Sightseeing, for making a solo traveler have an incredibly memorable time!
