About
The Inanda Heritage Tour starts at the Inanda township, and takes visitors into the Ohlange Institute, which was established by Rev. John Dube, who was also the first president of the African National Congress in 1901. The Ohlange Institute is the historical site where former president Dr. Nelson Mandela cast his vote in 1994.
The trail includes a visit to the Phoenix Settlement, established in 1904 by Gandhi. Ghandi’s home stands in the settlement, fully restored, and has been named as a national monument.
The Inanda Seminary, established in 1869 by the missionary Mary Edwards, is one of the oldest African private schools for girls, and has recently undergone a complete restoration, along the route is Ebuhleni village, the origin of the Shembe religion. The Shembe church was founded in the village about one hundred years ago, and today has over two million followers.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- FeFe107080 contributionsAwesome Cultural TourThe company, Afro Zulu Tours is well organized and communicated with us on WhatsApp to prepare us for the tour. Zamani was an excellent tour guide. We had books about the Zulu to review and water. We stopped at PheZulu Park for the Zulu Reenactment tour and performance which were well done. Also they have a reptile center there. Next we went to an existing town to learn about how the Zulu live today. All in all, this was a rewarding experience. Well worth it!Written 19 February 2024
- Tavia L0 contributionsGreat cultural tourGreat tour. Very informative. Kept my attention. I grew up watching Shaka every February during Black History Month in the States. I decided I wanted to visit and came across this tour. Great experience.Written 22 December 2023
- just_j70 contributionsAmazing tour in DurbanWe throughly enjoyed our tour with Afro Zulu tours. We had made arrangements before we started our cruise and found out a day before that we would be delayed getting off the ship due to immigration requirements. Zamani graciously worked with us on a schedule that would accommodate the change and was very flexible as things changed throughout the day and made sure our day was filled with many pieces of Durban sites. The tour itself was fascinating. Being a native Zulu, his knowledge of the Zulu history and culture is extensive. He is an amazing story teller that kept us constantly wanting more. We saw so many areas of the city and the townships that others on the ship did not see. We asked to see the local narural medicine market and He escorted thru it, which was a fascinating experience. He was very conscious of the time to ensure we made it back to the ship on time. Anyone traveling in this city definitely benefits from a local guide and zamani is a great choiceWritten 24 November 2023
- Vacation497826829370 contributionsExcellent tour service, Zamani was awesomeThe tour was so great. I had a jam packed day of visiting both parks and my guide Zamani was excellent. During the drive he took the time to teach me about Zulu culture and the history of South Africa. The parks themselves were beautiful and amazing I saw almost all of the big 5 and also some hippos during the relaxing boat tour.Written 17 June 2023
- Dubai Mohammed M0 contributionsEnjoyable, several animals in the park.As described, and the driver friendly, professional and helpful. I was partnered with a couple as I was alone, but I had a full view during the Safari and the boat ride. Since it is about observing, this trip was also enjoyable as a solo traveler.Written 4 June 2023
- V7632FFjanl0 contributionsNature and history, all-in-oneWe did this trip with three people. Destinations Hluhluwe Park Since it's two destinations the time in the park (game drive) was limited to 3h. That's not a lot, especially in a park this size and with limited lines of sight due to topography and vegetation. So while we did see quite a few animals this of course can not compete with staying in a park overnight and having an early morning game drive. Wetlands boat trip The boat trip was great, we saw literally dozens of hippos. However there's a catch: these boats approach the hippos quite closely. I would consider this harrasment of the animals and I'm not sure I would do it again. But if you're not considering that than taking this boat tour is a 100% success considering hippos. Tour organisation / Driver Let's get to the heart of the matter: our guide/driver. You can book a similar trips with lots of drivers. But if you're really interested in learning something, then you shouldn't, but book THIS ONE. Not only do the basics check out: Zamani contacted us to arrange pickup, car was adequate and roadworthy, he drove safely, everything on time and as planned. But much more: During the 6-7h we spent driving from and to Durban to the destinations, Zamani made history come alive: He drew us into the fascinating story of the Zulu culture. Being Zulu himself he started off in the distant past in the era of tribes, walked us through the era of king Shaka who united the tribes and built the Zulu kingdom, his successors, the colonial era up to present day. Not only did he know all about it, he presented the history, customs and culture of his people in the most lively, exciting and entertaining way, with lots of factual information as well as colorful stories, explanations, details about habits, culture, customs and background. It's rare to have a guide who is not only familiar with history AND is good in explaining and talking about it AND is a part of it (being Zulu himself) to an extent so he can credibly explain history, customs, culture and habits. We arrived back at the hotel not only having seen animals. We came home with a totally new understanding of the Zulu people, their history, culture and way of thinking. Summary This trip is NOT for you if you want to "see them all" in the Hluhluwe park due to the constraints of time and the long way to get there from Durban. Consider a 2-day trip or a more closeby private park. This trip is ABSOLUTELY for you if you have limited time, but are interested in not only seeing animals, but also being introduced into the culture and history of the Zulu people. It might well be there's no better guide out there for you.Written 8 May 2023

- T9969JYsilviaf0 contributionsTour to Lesotho through Sani passWe had an incredible experience driving through the Sani pass to Lesotho. The nature was stunning and we took some amazing pictures along the way. The tour was very well organised and everything ran smoothly, as our guide informed us properly with everything we needed to know. Definitely recommend this tour- we also had the chance to stop at the highest pub in Africa! It was incredible!Written 9 April 2023
- lauraaapeters0 contributionsWent to different places and they all were great!Amazing experience. Really authentic. We had a great time. Zamani is a great storyteller, could listen to him for hours!Written 3 April 2023
- TangoBangoB0 contributionsAmazing experience SafariThis was an amazing experience. From the time we started our trip. We were picked up at our front door. During the drive, we were well-informed about the different tribs and how things came to about. It was a great History lesson. He Went out of his way to make us comfortable on the drive. My mum got sick on the drive up and he was very patient and accommodating. When we arrived to the safari it was everything and more. I'll let the pictures shine.Written 6 February 2023
- Brent G0 contributionsGreat Durban guideWonderful time in Durban with Rennie. Extremely knowledgeable and passionate. This guy literally knows everyone, everywhere we went he was greeted as a friend and that made us feel very comfortable and in good hands. If you go to Durban these guys are affordable, drive extremely clean and modern SUV’s and know their stuff.Written 23 January 2023
- jamalh5890 contributionsVisit to Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift BattlefieldsI loved the commentary by the tour guide. He had a wonderful way of capturing the events leading up to and including the battles that brought the events to life as though they were happening before you.Written 8 November 2022
- Markie-Post0 contributionsBattlefields including Rorke’s Drift.I have travelled the world but neglected such a moving experience on my doorstep. I was privileged to join a small group 10-12 who had asked Rob Caskie to lead the tour to the battlefield. Rob’s ability to capture the events leading up to and during the battles; is simply amazing. His payoff line on his embroidered shirt is “Rob Caskie, engaging storyteller” and I can vouch for it. He tells is as it is, with the utmost respect to both sides. If you need somewhere to stay to keep the costs down, to look at Elandsview Guest Lodge. Phil is a wonderful host and gives you freedom to arrange your own schedule as it is self catering. During winter bring warm gear (5 - 13*c). During summer bring sun tan lotion.Written 7 June 2021
- Bulat23180 contributionsGreat experienceWonderful journey. Due to almost suspense of tourism at covid I was alone and all attention was for me like in personal VIP tour. Pickup and return on-time. Car and SUV were comfy. SUV driver is high professional in hard and dangerous mountain road. Zamani is knowing guide and also good driver. Both are great interlocutors. I saw some places in Durban and pleasant landscapes, towns and animals on the way. Sani Pass has impressionable mountains, gorges, rivers, waterfalls and plants. I watched the village in Lesotho with it's special countrylife and highest pub in Africa. And we were so lucky with our sunny trip just after that the weather changed to rainy. I'm extra satisfied! High recommendations! Many thanks! Ngibona kakhulu!Written 20 December 2020
