Outstanding adventure, kindness and lots of great laughs.
From start to finish I had an amazing experience on Safari with Viva. Staying at Tremisana Lodge was fantastic. All the drives to spot wildlife were fantastic, the guides helpful, kind and they all had a great sense of humour. The food and all the staff was exceptional. The Barbeque, going to Kruger, the accommodation, the laughs. You were really made to feel like you were part of their family. Thank you for the kindness, the warmth and friendliness and all the laughs. I enjoying seeing the big 5 and learning about all the animals I got to see. I strongly recommend Viva Safari 100%. Thank you.

          Best safari company!
Amazing 5 days/4 nights safari with Viva Safaris. From the beginning, communication with Patti was clear and efficient. Guides and rangers were the best, super friendly, helping, and going above and beyond to provide us with the best experience. Food at Tremisana was yummy, rooms quite comfortable, and all employees at the lodge were lovely. Got to see the big 5 and many more animals! It's definitely an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended.

          Superb experience. Loved it all.
Very well organised. Most of the guides were professional and knowledgeable. Saw a leopard, which is exactly what I wanted. Plus lots of other animals. Transport to and from the lodge was comfortable. Would recommend for solo travellers as I met some great people from all over the world.

          Amazingly good value safari!
Absolutely fantastic experience with Viva Safaris from start to finish! Accommodation for one night at Tremisana Lodge was a cosy little house with comfy bed and great shower. Two nights at Marc’s Treehouse Camp in a tent was amazing - large spacious tent with proper beds, electricity and a fan, with showers and toilet right next door - clean, nice, hot water. Accommodation exceeded expectations and I’ve done other budget safaris in Africa! All staff were friendly and helpful a the guided walks were both great and it was so good to be out of the vehicle for a while. Food was plentiful, simple, home style and great - catered for vegetarians. Appreciated coffee at 5am before the walks and home baked cakes and muffins at different times during the safari! The vehicle was fabulous - open sides and front door cool and lovely breeze with great view for everyone (max 9). Animal wise - our day in Kruger was amazing! Saw lots of animals even though it was raining part of the day. We didn’t see elephants or lions or rhinos outside of Kruger but were unlucky - we saw hippos, buffalo, a hyena, giraffe. This safari was exceptionally good value and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Sleeping in a tent is a must! The sounds of the insects and animals was something I’ll never forget!

Lovely experience for my first safari ever
Viva Safaris exceeded all my expectations for my first safari. Initially I was really worried about safety and the food, but after the first 3 hours I knew everything was going to be just fine. Previously, we stayed at a five star hotel in Capetown and I was not able to eat much — the meals we had at Viva Safaris were home-cooked, tasty, nutritious, and best of all did not make me ill like when I was in Capetown. Their breakfasts and dinners were very filling and what I am used to: egg, bacon, beans and toast, or protein, rice, and vegetables for dinner with a soup to start. The photo is of the first dinner that they held outside at a nearby campsite. In the first sunset drive, we were able to see hyenas, lions, an elephant outside the resort, baboons at the entrance, loads of impala, and even a giraffe. I remember feeling like if I had to leave, I would already feel satisfied. The bush walk was not as physically straining as I thought it would be, the walk had to have been a little more than a mile and the rest of the bush walk was a drive. We saw many hippos near the river. The day at Kruger was gorgeous. I have never seen so many animals living freely and happily. We saw a buffalo, rhino, leopard, cheetah, over 50 elephants, a warthog, hippos, zebras and ginoos, giraffes, Cape buffalo, and many exotic birds. My advice to other first timers would be to keep an open mind and to dress for all sorts of weather. I found that I didn’t use the warm weather clothing I packed because of the rain and the windiness of the drives. Boots or sneakers (that you aren’t afraid to get dirty), tall socks, layers and water resistant outerwear were all useful to me — and don’t forget Lots of SPF and bug spray. Thanks to Rocky who was our first tour guide he knew so much about the animals. Thanks to Luke who was our very knowledgeable tour guide for the bush walk and Kruger. Luke was able to answer so many of our questions about the animals and their behavior. I think the sign of a great safari tour guide is their ability to sight an animal from far away. Luke was able to sight a leopard on a tree in the distance.

          Fantastic Safari
What an amazing experience! From the initial email, communication was fantastic. We decided on the Tremisana Lodge package instead of the treehouse. Our pick up shuttle was running late, so we arrived at the lodge just in time to do the sunset safari and bbq. The staff were very welcoming. All guides and drivers were so friendly and knowledgeable. The staff at the lodge were great. The food was amazing! All in all, it was everything we could have hoped for. I highly recommend this tour and this company.

          Great team, great Safari
We did the Kruger & Hluhluwe package and had some amazing days with Viva Safari! Everything was perfect, and especially the guides and the staff at the Tremisana Lodge made our trip more than remarkable. I have to say that we were pretty impressed by how well they organised every single day and how much fun we had. The Kruger safari was so much fun, our favourite activity. After leaving Tremisana Lodge we spent 3 days with Charl, our guide, and our driver George in Hluhluwe/ ISimangaliso wetland park what we really enjoyed. We felt like travelling with friends and appreciated their outstanding work. Thank you once again and greetings from Nepal.

          Great, I enjoyd every moment.
So many wild animals in just a few days. Everything was well organized, drivers knew much about animals. The lodge was great, and it,s inside the park so you can see wild elephants while eating breakfast.

          A priceless experience!
7 Days Tremisana/Pumusa Kruger Hluhluwe and St. Lucia Safari. These 7 days that I spent with Viva Safaris were an unforgettable experience! To begin with the organisation through VS was excellent. Everything was so well planed and worked well. The pick-up and drop off, the game drives, the meal times. The welcome through the staff at Tremisana game lodge was wonderful especially Nyarai, who was very helpful. All game rangers were very good and gave everything to ensure a good game sight. A lot of little things I appreciated a lot. For example: bottle of water on arriving, a snack on the walk or on a game drive. And then the evening meal under the tree! The days were full so it was nice to have half a day at the pool at Tremisana. The wildlife we saw was just indescribable!! One has to experience it to understand the beauty of it. I’ve been quite a few times in Kruger but never saw the animals so near and that in open cars. Thanks to all rangers who made this possible! For me the accommodations ( Tremisana and Pumusa) were just what I was looking for. Basic but everything one needed and always very clean. Tremisana with its beautiful garden and Pumusa covered by trees. A big thank you to the 2 long distance drivers George (Jo’burg and return) and George (to Pumusa and return). Both exzellent and safe drivers, always aware of the situation. Especially to George with whom we spent 3 days down at Pumusa. He’s wonderful laugh and good mood was a great companion on the trip. And also to Nelli in Pumusa who looked so well after me when I was ill. And then I end with a praise on the kitchen ladies and especially to Mamma D how cooked so wonderful. In all, great value for the money. But actually priceless for the experience I had. Thank you very much! I wish Viva Safaris a lot new guests. Heidi W. Frankfurt, Germany

I had a great experience on this safari with viva. I thoroughly enjoyed my 6 days at camp. Initially I thought that it could be too long and not much to do but actual fact everyday was full of adventure. The Tremisama staff were the jewel of the experience as they made camp feel like a family affair with really genuine caring people. Beautiful 6-Day Safari
When planning our trip, we had the choice between many different safari providers. In the end, we decided in favour of Viva Safaris, which turned out to be absolutely the right decision. Before the trip, Marco from Viva Safaris was available to answer all our questions and we got answers quickly. From the hotel transfer to the entire organisation of the activities on site, everything was perfectly organised. We received a warm welcome when we arrived. The resort is not too big, so there is a family atmosphere between guests, staff and the owners. The trips were very varied and exciting. A big compliment to all the guides who put a smile on everyone's face with their good humour. They catered to our wishes and always looked after us. On day three we had seen all the big five except for the leopard. So Smiley (one of the guides) did everything he could to find it and he did. An incredible experience. I would advise everyone to arrive hungry as there is a lot of good food. In the end we had an unforgettable 6 days and would advise anyone to book their safari trip with Viva Safaris. Many thanks to the whole team and a special thanks to our guides: Smiley, Lucky, Rocky, Nadine and Ray!!

          Great safari experience!
We stayed at Tremisana and Katekani Lodges. The lodges has its differences in terms of facilities but both lodge’s staff are really really amazing hosts. My husband and I are vegetarian/vegan and both needs are well catered for. We really enjoyed Margarets cooking at Katekani. Thank you so much! The activities are well organised in our case which made us extended our stay. They will always give you a briefing the night before for your full day activities the following day which we really appreciate so we dont have to rely on our own notes. We experienced game drives in Bulale reserve, full day game drives in Kruger, some bush walks and a lil bit of night drive after sunset dinner in the bush. Price wise, I would say they are reasonable and decent compared to other safari tour agencies I’ve inquired initially. Overall, we both enjoyed our first safari experience and glad we chose Viva Safaris. PS. We had seen tons of animals but only posting some.

Absolutely incredible experience. Definitely worth the money! You are guaranteed a very authentic bush stay. Although this cost a little more than some of the other accommodations I would recommend it 1000 times over! The lodges are lovely, clean and Margaret at Katekani makes your stay. The food every night is also very nice. Our days at kruger were unreal, all of the rangers are knowledgeable and make your experience fun. We saw so many amazing animals which we were really grateful for. Everything was well organised, from being picked up in Johannesburg to the itinerary every day. It was a great start to our 3 week trip travelling around South africa and a must if you're thinking of going!!

Great experience start to finish! We booked the 5 day safari and were able to see tons of animals during our drives and morning walks. Our guides Andy and Luke were excellent at answering all our questions and spotting so many animals. The hosts at both the lodges were incredibly kind and attentive, and made wonderful food for us. The lodges are clean and comfortable as well. Our itinerary provided before the experience was slightly different than what we ended up doing for one of the days, but it ended up being wonderful as it was a visit to the wildlife rehab center. Highly recommend this for couples as this was a great honeymoon getaway for us.

This was a bucket list trip. Have always wanted to do safari in Africa, was hard to decide between Kenya/Tanzania or South Africa. Obviously South Africa won out. Not knowing what to expect, I was quite impressed with this operator. Our transfers, our accommodations, our safari trips to Kruger and different game reserves were all more than I would've expected.

I know that it is not a tour operator responsibility for the animals to show up, but we were lucky enough to catch the big 5 (as they say) and then some.

Katekani Lodge is a dream. Not sure why the word 'tented lodge' appears in the description, because this place is pure luxury. There is one wall of the dwelling that is made of canvas, but that would be as much tent as you're gonna get here. Amazing comfortable beds, enough room to have a dance party, a great deck, a dipping pool, and even and indoor / outdoor shower. Make no mistake, this is not a ‘tent’!!!! There are only 6 of these, and we were lucky to be the only ones there one night. Which meant we had are very own personal chef, “Tiger”, who rustled up some of the finest food I’ve had in a long time. Margaret was a dear and made sure our every need was tended to. One morning, it looked like it may rain so she had umbrellas and rain ponchos ready for us when we departed.

What makes this tour so amazing is that you get to go to several different game reserves, Kruger, and a rehabilitation centre. Every transfer was handled with efficiency, and everyone we met was absolutely amazing. I could not believe how friendly everyone was, and so engaging in conversations.

I would not begin to comprehend how someone would want to take on an adventure on this by renting a car and doing this by themselves. You would miss out on so much. This is the only way to do a safari and I would recommend Viva 100%. You will not be disappointed.

Hi What an equally AMAZING review !!! We are thrilled that Viva Safaris vindicated your decision to choose South Africa ahead of Kenya/Tanzania. It is very gratifying to know that all aspects of our operation surpassed your expectations. We are pleased that you so enjoyed Katekani - it is indeed a "dream". Thank you for acknowledging the diverse wildlife activities that make our program so exciting. I am happy to know all our staff were engaging, talkative and friendly. Thanks for a brilliant recommendation. Kind regards Piero

        Short version: Everthing was perfect.

All the transports are well organised and safe. All the people from VIVA Safari are very friendly and try their best, to give you the best experiance. The food was great and the tented lodge at Katekani was awesome - a lot of space, refreshing privat pool and even a AC, if needed.

At all the stops during Krueger Park or the transfers you are able to pay with credit cards, only at the lodge you will need cash for drinks.
Yes, the programm is packed full, but this is the best chance to see a lot of the animals. But you can skip parts of programm if wished. The bush walk was short and very interessting and easy to do.
The first night in Tremisana lodge is outside of Kruger National Park, there for you can do game-drives on sunset and sunrise, you will have the chance to see lots of animals.

We loved the experiance and our first safari and highly recommend VIVA Safari. There are other plans and camps you can book - for us the 5 days tour and to stay at Katekani was perfect.

        Side node to malaria:
During this time (end of summer - more rain) malaria risk is higher. We spoke with the employees, the don't face problems.
We were pre-caution and took the "malaria-medicine" and for sure bug spray.

Thanks, Remo, for the PERFECT safari review !! We are pleased to know that your experience was enhanced by VIVA'S friendly and hard-working staff. Thank you for your positive comments on Katekani - it is indeed "awesome", as you put it. Thanks for sharing your experiences of the various activities on our action-packed safari packages. Thanks also for your advice in respect of malaria. We monitor the situation on a daily basis and our staff keep their ears open for any outbreak in our part of the world. In the almost 30 years we have run Tremisana, we have not had a single case of malaria contracted by our fulltime staff. Be well

Know before you go. Overall the experience was good. However, I feel there is some room for improvement. The tour guides are knowledgeable and patient. The terrace viewing from the dining area was awesome. I would recommend the safari company. However, if you are going to go with this company there are a few things you should know before you go.

PRO: Pick up at Hotel or JNB Airport

*CON: almost 7 hour drive to Tremisana Game Lodge with 7 guests in a 12 passenger van and 8 hours for the return with 12 passengers, which made for an uncomfortable ride. Two men attempted to mug my husband at the rest stop gas station. Be aware of your surroundings. Furthermore, we had 3 different transportation experience. The first van was old, lacked headrest in the back row and the A/C did not work well. The van appeared to be in need shocks as the ride was very uncomfortable and the roads in South Africa are substandard. The second van had a strong odor of mildew. The 3rd can was brand new. The a/c worked wonderfully and it even had USB-C plugs through the back of the vehicle.

PRO: Tremisana Game Lodge has accommodation for families. Full room A/C with Mosquito nets over the beds. This property has a beautiful community pool. Viewing of game animals from the dining patio was wonderful.

CON: The public restroom needed attention, I will spare you the picture. It was very dirty. The Wifi is only available in the bar area not through out the property. The safe did not work in the rooms. There were not enough outlets to charge in the rooms and despite having a variety of convertors, none of mine worked. There was rust around the entry door to the bathroom that has the potential to cause a need for a tetanus shot immediately.

PRO: KateKani Tented Lodges is beautiful and peaceful for couples. A/C above the bed only, indoor and outdoor shower and bathtub, very nice kitchenette with mini fridge and nicely decorated. The public bathroom was very clean.

CON: Our A/C did not cool it simply circulated air. Apparently, our tent had not been rented recently, as we discovered the A/C unit not cooling. We brought it to the staff attention and he discovered a broken line and the freon had leaked out of the system. It seemed to work that night but not the following nights. They did offer to move us but it was late and we were tired. The personal pools are non-circulated or filtered pools. It is not drained between guests either. Our pool was very cloudy likely due to having to use an excessive amount of chemicals to make it presentable. Other pools with in the Katekani were green algae, mosquito infested, biohazards and a breeding ground malaria carrying mosquitos.

PRO: Tree house is rustic and inexpensive. This is ideal for a minimalist or back packers.

PRO: They hosted several Game Drives within the Balule Game Reserve, this is where we saw the most variety of animals.

*CON: Very busy schedule with little time to enjoy the property you choose

PRO: When booking 5 days, there are 2 full days in Kruger National Park

*CON: There is no guarentee to see all the Big 5 during your safari. As it seems that nobody has developed an electronic way of documenting the daily or hourly sightings. We spent the second day chasing the possibility of Lion sightings. Additionally, our first Kruger day they put 10 people on a safari truck that accommodated only 9 guests. Leaving someone to sit in the cab of the truck with our guide. Leaving that passenger unable to see anything. I was one of the guest left in that position. I quickly advised the office that this practice was unacceptable and it was rectified to my satisfaction for the second day in the park.

PRO: Booking with Viva Safari offers a variety of accommodations, knowledgable guides and transportation to and from Johannesburg. The tour guides especially Rocky, KG, Andy and Victor were exceptionally patient with all of our quests for pictures.

Despite everything listed above, I would still recommend booking with Viva Safari. Why, because most of these things listed can be improved. It was hard to find a company that will do the driving for you. I can tell you that it was good to have safety in numbers.

Below are the advisories I would make to future guests.

        * Air Conditioning is inconsistent due to loadsharing electricity accompanied by scheduled Black-Outs in 2 hour increments up to 4 hours a night.
        * Viva Safari doesn’t use a generator or have solar to enhance their guests experience.

Hi Natasha Thanks for a long and informative review. We are pleased that, overall, you "would still recommend booking with Viva Safaris". As you correctly state, the Cons can be solved. I shall deal with each concern separately. 1. Pickup and transfer For ALL our clients safety and security we collect them from their homes, hostels, hotels and airport. This is a costly and time-consuming exercise but well worth it given the concerns that ALL tourists to SA have about crime. We do not subcontract to any other operator or accommodation establishment and take full responsibility for the care and wellbeing of each and every guest from the moment we collect them to the moment we drop them off. By law, our drivers need a 1 h lunch break so as to be rested for the long 480 km journey. 2. Tremisana Lodge Tremisana is advertised as an unpretentious accommodation establishment. This does not excuse anyone from checking the rest rooms more regularly. Ntombi, our hostess, advises that the monkeys that you saw in abundance at Tremisana must have entered the toilets and messed things up. The safes are operated by a key on the bunch for each chalet. The rusty corner has been painted. 3. Katekani Lodge Manager Charl advises that air conditioning is the tents is more effective once the canvas windows are closed. He also advises that your unit was working after a top up of freon. He denies that any splash pool has mosquitoes as the pools are chlorinated. I am told by the guides, who you praise so highly, that they have graduated from a "show the guests the Big Five at all costs" mentality to a more mature approach in which a holistic approach to an appreciation of the entire wildlife experience is fostered. I thank Head Guide, Luke, for his efforts in this regard. Be well

Did the 5-day safari trip to Kruger National Park with Viva Safari with a big family of 7 during the winter month of June. Initially, I had concerns about the legitimacy of the safari company I booked with, but I chose to book through TripAdvisor to ensure reliability. Turns out my fears were unfounded. Viva Safari is a well-run and organized company, with warm and trustworthy people who prioritized our safety and satisfaction.

Journey started with a long 6 hour drive from Joburg with a rest stop in a small town for lunch. The lunch spot was on a street lined with a row of cafes, was a lot better than I expected with decent food.

Tremisana was cute. Rooms were definitely cozy and definitely could use some sprucing up but it was like the introductory safari experience for our 5 day package. Situated in the bushes, the compound is surrounded by an electric fence to keep the animals out. Lions and Hyenas were roaming the area at night right outside the camp. The first dinner in the bush under the star filled sky was quite the experience with the meats on the grill. Truney, our host at Tremisana, was an absolute gem. Her warm and friendly demeanor immediately put us at ease. Made it fun for the kids.

Moving on to Ketakani, we stayed at their tented lodge for the next 3 nights. The tents were quite open to the air outside so taking showers was a painful experience but that’s what you get for booking the place in the middle of winter, I could imagine summer would be a lot more fun. Rooms are spacious and you get serenaded by Hyenas during the night. The compound is open so we were warned there might be animals lurking nearby but ultimately only a bunch of monkeys came to greet us. Place was manned by Shawl who runs the tight ship in Katekani, he looks like he could wrestle a bear so we felt safe during our stay.

The guides, Smiley and George, were instrumental in making our time unforgettable. Their expertise, professionalism, and infectious enthusiasm for the wildlife made every game drive an exciting adventure. They shared their knowledge generously, pointing out various animal tracks and explaining their behaviors, which enhanced our safari experience. Both made tremendous effort in helping us track down the big 5s. Charl was another great guide who took us out for the last walking tour. Learned a great deal about the flora and fauna of the plains. Amazing staff. Whole lot of fun for not a lot of money, great experience for the whole family.

The accommodation at Katekani Lodge was very spacious and comfortable for me and my wife. It was basically a suite within a tent. It had a private outdoor patio and small pool though we were not able to use it as we were out the whole day and by the time we returned to the lodge, it was already late and temperature outside was already cold. No complaints whatsoever with the Katekani Lodge itself. It was a very nice place to stay.

I was actually not aware when I booked this trip that the first night would be spent at Tremisana Lodge (not Katekani Lodge). It was my fault, not theirs, as I had not looked at the details of the trip. However, we given the Guest House 1 at Tremisana Lodge which was also like a suite with a bedroom and a separate huge living room which was comfortable. Meals at Tremisana Lodge, however, needs a lot of improvement both in taste, quality and quantity. There were so many guests at the Tremisana Lodge that it felt like they were rationing the food during meals. Katekani Lodge, however, was an entirely different story. The only guest at the Katekani Lodge was me and my wife when we were there. Margaret was the cook at Katekani Lodge and she took good care of us. Every meal we had with Margaret tasted good and served on a buffet table for us (unlike the Tremisana Lodge where our servings were portioned so that maybe our plate would contain more food than we cared to eat or contained less food than we wanted). We are very grateful to Margaret at Katekani Lodge for cooking those tasty meals for us.

What is memorable for us is that during our first day when we were at Tremisana Lodge, we had a sunset drive where within the first few minutes we spotted an elephant near the Lodge. A few minutes later we also spotted a Lion lazily walking along the path of the off-road vehicle. We spent quite a few minutes watching and taking pictures of the lion while it was lazily lying down the middle of the road and doing some of its roars.

The trip to the Kruger National Park the following day was an 8-hour ride on the vehicle driving around the park hoping to get a glimpse of the animals in the reserve. We did see some of the animals (elephants, giraffes, hippos, ostrich, hyena, lions, many kinds of birds). Our original booking was only for a one day Kruger park visit with a different activity for the next day. However, our schedule was changed by the tour company about a month before our trip and we were informed that instead we would have a 2nd straight day of the 8-hour Kruger visit in the vehicle. After experiencing the first day riding on a vehicle for 8 hours and looking for animals, we did not feel like doing the same activity again. it was an exhausting 8 hours sitting on the vehicle scanning for animals (specially if one is in the middle seat). We requested for a different activity (visit the animals in the rehab center). Luckily there was space available for the Rehab center trip that day and we learned quite a few things about the animals at the Rehab Center. This trip to the rehab center was a visit that was worth it as we would rather just have stayed in our Lodge rather than spending another 8 hours riding around Kruger Park for a 2nd straight day. If we have to do a safari again, we probably would not do this kind of safari again where we would just ride a vehicle over paved roads and search for animals who may visible from those paved roads (We assume that being wild, most animals would stay away from the roads with passing vehicles anyway).

The other thing where the company could improve is to give us a heads up of the upcoming schedules. Most of the guests (including us) were asking each other what time or where our next activity would be but most did not know. We were told about the schedules only at the last minute.

This was our first time on a safari so we didn’t know any better. But we did meet a couple from Germany on this trip who just came from a few safari trips in different African countries before they joined this trip in Kruger Park. What I learned from them is that you should do your own research if this is the right safari trip for you (or not). If one wants to watch animals in the wild, then there are lots of available options where one can stay in an area where animals live and letting them come to your camp and watching them in the wild where you stay (rather than one needing to ride a vehicle searching for animals near the roads). There are, of course, tradeoffs as one may need to camp away from modern conveniences vs staying in accommodations with all that we are used to like internet access, electricity and paved roads. To each his own.

Hi there Thanks for a very detailed review. We are pleased that you so enjoyed Katekani - it certainly is a lot more luxurious than Tremisana. Margrett is very grateful for your appreciation of her efforts. When we have many guests at Tremisana, the staff expedite matters at dinners by serving plated food. Our experience is that it is very time-consuming and somewhat cumbersome to have self serve buffets when we have a lot of people lining up. I am glad that you were able to easily change your itinerary to include a visit to Moholoholo instead of a second day in Kruger. I am sorry that you were not advised timeously about the next day's activity - this usually does happen. Our experience is that animals do not come to you at the camp - you need to actively search for them and sometimes have to drive long distances to find elusive species. Be well
