Where to start? What an absolutely fantastic experience doing the 4 day Tremisana package. Highly recommend Viva Safaris to anyone wanting to experience a safari in South Africa. The guides were incredibly knowledgable and special shout out to Victor - firstly for introducing me to some authentic African music en route to Kruger and secondly, for finding our group Casper the famous Kruger park lion! Also a big shoutout to Smiley Hakuna Matata for introducing us to the Zulu traditions around elephant dung (no spoilers for anyone reading!).

Food was excellent. Game drives were excellent. Thanks to all involved!

Hi Reece What an amazing review !!! We are thrilled to read that you so enjoyed your safari with Viva Safaris. I am happy that Victor played some authentic African music for you - this is an additional extra not usually offered!! Great that you found Casper, the famous White Lion. I remember him as a newborn cub and actually had doubts as to whether he would make it. What a magnificent specimen he has turned out to be ! Elias will love to read that you enjoyed the Zulu traditions around elephant dung ! Thanks for so appreciating our " excellent" product. Be well

Excellent service and a true pleasure dealing with every person I met along the way.

Guides Juri, Tolli, Victor, and Patrick were all extremely knowledgable and showed so much passion for their jobs. With their experience, I was able to have many animal sightings, including all the Big 5.

Wonderful staff also at the lodges - cooks, receptionists etc greeted me by name and were happy to chat.

Great logistics throughout the entire trip, I rarely had to wait for more than 5 minutes, which is totally acceptable given distances and unexpected road conditions. Spending hours and hours sitting in cars is of course not the most comfortable experience but unavoidable.

I read bad reviews out of curiosity and can‘t agree with any of them. I‘d prefer slightly less aggressive answers from the GM, though. Feedback is a gift, and even if you don‘t like the pair of socks you got from your mother in law, you shouldn’t lash out imho.

All in all one of the best trips of my life (>1 million KM flown and >60 countries visited).

Will recommend Viva and will be back.

Hi Philip Thanks for a wonderful review from beginning to end. I am thrilled you liked the service, the staff and the lodgings. What makes it even more impressive is that you have travelled over 1 000 000 km and visited over 60 countries and regard this as one of the best trips of your life ! I accept your criticism re aggressive responses. Some disgruntled guests seem determined to be destructive - like receiving from my mother-in-law a pair of unmatched, smelly socks with holes !! Be well and thanks again.

We loved our time with Viva Safaris. Pick-up/drop off in Johannesburg was very smooth (though it is a fairly long drive).
The various activities were all excellent, with bush walks and game drives spread throughout and one full day in the main Kruger Parc.
We saw all of the big 5 and much more.
The food and service at the lodges was great, particularly at Tremisana Lodge (which is also beautiful & has lovely accommodation).

A disappointing four day safari. Only one day spent in Kruger National Park where there is an abundance of animals. Other days were spent in a private game reserve “Kruger Park” where animals were extremely rare - only one lion seen, one giraffe, one (disabled) zebra. Accommodation wasn’t in a treehouse at all, but a hut in the woods which was very disappointing. We encountered several power cuts which I understand is quite common but on arriving back at the camp after a long long day in the National Park, not a single member of staff was around to tell us what was going on or even to open the bar to offer us a drink. The full day in Kruger National Park was far too long. 9 hours of just sitting apart from a 90 minute lunch break. A 4 hour morning session would have been plenty. Long long drive from Johannesburg - we were collected from our Johannesburg hotel around 8am and arrived at the Kruger Park at 5.30 although the driver was extremely good at making several “comfort breaks” along the way. Would recommend flying instead.

Hi Thanks for your review. I am unclear as to what you understood on our brochure. We advertise that there is one full day in Kruger. I doubt very much that you only saw only 1 lion,1 zebra and 1 giraffe on the private reserve in Greater Kruger , but perhaps you had bad luck !!! Our treehouses are clearly and unambiguously described on all for a including our website. Unfortunately we have load shedding in SA at the moment and there will be associated inconveniences. This also impacts on traffic ( no lights ) and does add to the travelling time from Johannesburg to Kruger. I agree that flying may be a quicker option. Be well Piero

The whole experience was easy and convenient. The time in the parks was fantastic. Overall the safari element gets 4 stars just dropping points because they lacked a little bit of flexibility with their program especially in our case of wet weather. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Guides were excellent.

The accomodation was in my opinion 2 star and the food was average. The menu was set and was very basic school camp style food. These elements were not good value for the overall price and while by no means a dealbreaker you may find better value elsewhere.

Overall we had a very positive experience as the parks are just fantastic.

Hi Brendan Thanks for a straightforward review. We are happy to read that the safari experience was "great, easy and convenient". It is pleasing that you found the staff "extremely helpful" and the guides "excellent." It is really disappointing to read about the accommodation and food. Perhaps the inclement weather had its effect as most of our guests enjoy the rustic character of the treehouses as well as the food, as evidenced by previous reviews. Notwithstanding the above negative issues, we are pleased that, overall, you had a "very positive" experience. Thanks for your honesty. Be well Piero

First off Pretty and Ivy rock, they did a fabulous job. We were picked up at the airport upon arrival and brought to the Lodge for our first night. The rooms were small but comfortable with air con. The evening drive was great, we even saw rhinos. Then we were taken to a spot for dinner which was quite delicious. The first full day involved an early morning bush walk and then an afternoon drive before going to Marc's Treehouse for the night. The rooms vary there, we were pleased with our room while our friends were not with theirs but it's not like you're spending much time there. We were not informed that they would be entering to make our beds and later discovered that we had almost $600 (yes, I know we shouldn't have had that much on us) stolen from our luggage while we were out. So that sucks. We did inform Viva and they said they won't do anything and that no one will confess to seeing the money (big surprise there, thieves are usually very honest, smh). If you choose to go through this company, keep your valuables on you at all times.

Hi Nicole Thanks for that. Of course we are sorry that you lost money. There are omissions on your part : What you fail to mention is that you discovered the loss only after you returned to your hostel in Johannesburg. You also fail to mention that on the Welcome Letter you receive upon boarding our pickup vehicle, there is a clear and unambiguous statement : " SECURITY : Hand in valuables to the Camp Manager. Keep all cash, cell phones etc on you. " Did you not read this ? In addition the very same hostesses Pretty and Ivy would have told you this on arrival at Tremisana and Marcs. What is of the greatest concern to me is that the amounts allegedly stolen increased with successive emails you sent to our Office. That sucks !! Piero

Booked this safari and had an amazing time. We booked with detourafrica and we felt very safe and organisation side was good. We did the bush walk as well as the safari. The guides was very knowledgable. I wish we had booked the 5 day tour and not the 4 day tour, i do think you need 2 days in Kruger National Park. Thanks guys for an amazing time.

Hi Thanks for an equally amazing review. We are pleased that you felt safe at all times - that is precisely why we do door to door pick up and return to your hotel/hostel. Good to read that the Viva Safaris organisation was good and that your guides were very knowledgeable. Please come again for a longer safari next time - you are always welcome ! Be well Piero

We were a group of 4 friends and our experience was really bad!

Pickup - Starting with the pickup at the airport, we took a flight really early from Cape Town, to be there on time, between 9 - 9:15 am as they requested, the driver got there almost 2 hours later.. also there was no information about where to meet up etc, so we had to find a way to call them to ask about the pickup location. I spoke to Mr. Piero (General Manager) on the phone, which was supposed to be polite and give us the information and support needed, but he was rude and unprofessional instead, hanging up the phone while I was still talking. I was using a old phone from a local guy who showed up and offered to help making the call when he saw I was struggling with the public phone, so it was a bit hard to understand his instructions with a different accent, that was when very rudely Mr. Piero asked me “ which language are you speaking, do you speak English” and hanged up the phone, sending the information by text message laters.

Accomodation - On our second day, after getting back from the bush in the morning, I realized some cash (dollars) missing from my room. I understand that I should have taken more care regarding to that, taking the cash with me or putting it in a safer, but I didn’t really expect that it would happen. Can’t tell exactly how that happened, and I won’t take the opportunity to accuse anyone. But the cash was left there, and house keepers was the only ones who accessed the room apparently (that’s what manager on duty said, after a complaint was raised). He even called all room attendants to ask them if they’ve seen anything, but the money was not found. Again, I cannot point a finger at anyone since I haven’t seen anything, but the money was gone, that’s for sure. The solution for that was, I could go to a police station and rase a complaint.

Staff - the engagement of the staff varied a lot.. some of then were really nice and seemed well trained and “willing” to find something and explain it.. others just wanted to drive, get it done and come back. Just ONE guide used the communication radio, trying to contact others checking up if they saw something etc..
I had a feeling that much more could have been seen with a better trained and more engaging staff. A part of the incident with the money, staff at Tremisana Lodge (chef, waitress, etc) were nice, the food also was good. (Pretty) was really friendly.

Kruger Park - at some point, it seemed that we were on a F1 car, driving like crazy, and not because we were trying to get at some place quickly chasing some animals. Haven’t seen almost anything.. not blaming them completely for that, but just felt like the driver was tired, felt sorry for him actually. A part of that, on the way back our car got BROKEN, we had to stop several times, waiting for the engine to cool out, so that we could continue a little bit more, and stop again and so on till we got to the lodge. Apparently that is something that happens quite often with them, a friend of mine experienced something similar, they car broke as soon as they got to Kruger Park, and they had to for about 3 hours for another car so that they could continue with the tour.

Feedback - It seems that Mr Piero (General Manager) is a person who doesn’t really take his guest feedbacks positively, just the GOOD ones are well accepted. As it can be seen on the reviews, everytime someone states their bad experience, he sarcastically replies back. That just proves why VIVA SAFARIS has a lot to improve, starting with its management.

To summarize - Consider spending a little more, and book somewhere else that takes it more serious, somewhere that cares about their guests, their well being and appreciation, and takes in their feedbacks a chance to improve and do it even better.

Hi Eli Thanks for your time in writing this review. First of all, every guest who arrives at O R Tambo airport is sent an attachment clearly indicating where we collect you at O R Tambo. The driver denies that he was nearly 2 hours late. We give an approximate pickup time as we are affected by traffic, rain, other clients delays etc. I deny putting down the phone. At our lodges in the bush we have variable telephone connectivity. I could not hear nor understand you and when reception was restored I had to sms you. I am sorry about the alleged theft - we always unambiguously advise all guests to hand any valuables to management for safekeeping. There is no excuse for drivers exceeding the speed limit - regardless of their rush to show you animals -for that and the resultant overheating of vehicle, we apologise. I do value ALL constructive criticism and pass this on to all management and staff so as to provide a better service. I thank you for your contribution to Viva Safaris. Kind regards Piero

First of all, I enjoyed the tour a lot and I had so much fun with the other people attending the tour. I got to see the different animals and got some good stories to tell when I go back home.

However, I have a feeling that the tour could be much better because:
- Pick-up the first day arrived more than 1 hour late and I didn't get any notice. I called their office, but they weren't helpful at all.
- The engagement of the staff seemed to vary a lot. Some were very engaging and were able to tell about the animals and plants, while others didn't really seem to care too much and just drove/walked us around to earn their money.
- Most of the staff at the Tresmina lodge didn't seem happy. There was a weird atmosphere at the lodge and there seemed to be some tension among the staff.
- The atmosphere at Marc's Tree House was more happy, but the staff didn't seem to care too much for their customers. I got electric shock in the shower the last morning (probably due to a short circuit). I told the staff and they didn't apologize or anything. I just got the answer "Ok, we will take a look at it".
- The quality of the food could be improved a lot without much effort.

Just to summarize: I had a lot of fun and got to see all the animals even though they we had to drive for quite a while to find them. It was a great experience, but I believe that it could be so much better if the staff where better trained and more engaging.

Hi Thor Thanks for an honest and good review. We are pleased that you had fun and have some great stories to tell. We take your comments about our staff seriously. I am not sure why you were picked up late - usually a traffic-related problem. I shall see to it that your review is sent to both Tremisana and Marc's Treehouses and we hope that the improvements that you correctly state can be made, will , indeed , be effected. Thanks for your constructive criticism. Be well Piero

My family and I had a wonderful experience. The guides, and the kitchen staff at Viva Safaris are extremely nice and accommodating. The tour exceeded our expectations. Piero, the General manager, does everything possible to ensure that you have a great trip. Booking is easy and Nyarai, the secretary, takes care of every detail of your trip.
