Absolutely AMAZING!
Feb 2020
Absolutely loved my trip with VIVA SAFARIS! This was an absolute highlight of my trip to South Africa! After being picked up in Joburg, the drive to Balule/Kruger is 5-6 hours but the awaiting evening game drive will totally make up for it, incl. dinner in the bush with hyenas in the back! This throws you right into a wonderful bush experience! I spent one night at Tremisana and two nights at Marc's - the only thing I regret is that I didn't make it a 5 or even 6 day safari trip! We had two morning bush walks and one day in Kruger - it was quite hot that day, that's also why I'd recommend a few more days for your safari if you can fit it in so you have enough days to actually try and get to see all the animals. :) You get absolute great value for your money! I'd totally recommend it to anyone going to Kruger/ South Africa for a safari trip!

SPECIAL SHOUTOUT to Charl from Tremisana Lodge who showed us the wild dogs! Won't ever forget that experience when we thought it'd be a slow tour after a rainy day and then we discovered these guys. BRILLIANT! :)

Hi Mareike Thanks for an absolutely AMAZING review. We are pleased that Viva Safaris provided the highlight of your trip to South Africa. We appreciate your comment that you regret not having booked a longer safari. Thanks for the special mention of Charl and the Wild Dogs - our Webmaster, Marco, has added the clip of the Wild Dogs catching the impala on our Facebook page ! Be well Piero

Not really what was advertised.
Feb 2020
A disappointing four day safari. Only one day spent in Kruger National Park where there is an abundance of animals. Other days were spent in a private game reserve “Kruger Park” where animals were extremely rare - only one lion seen, one giraffe, one (disabled) zebra. Accommodation wasn’t in a treehouse at all, but a hut in the woods which was very disappointing. We encountered several power cuts which I understand is quite common but on arriving back at the camp after a long long day in the National Park, not a single member of staff was around to tell us what was going on or even to open the bar to offer us a drink. The full day in Kruger National Park was far too long. 9 hours of just sitting apart from a 90 minute lunch break. A 4 hour morning session would have been plenty. Long long drive from Johannesburg - we were collected from our Johannesburg hotel around 8am and arrived at the Kruger Park at 5.30 although the driver was extremely good at making several “comfort breaks” along the way. Would recommend flying instead.

Hi Thanks for your review. I am unclear as to what you understood on our brochure. We advertise that there is one full day in Kruger. I doubt very much that you only saw only 1 lion,1 zebra and 1 giraffe on the private reserve in Greater Kruger , but perhaps you had bad luck !!! Our treehouses are clearly and unambiguously described on all for a including our website. Unfortunately we have load shedding in SA at the moment and there will be associated inconveniences. This also impacts on traffic ( no lights ) and does add to the travelling time from Johannesburg to Kruger. I agree that flying may be a quicker option. Be well Piero

Organised tour. Rustic experience in treehouse.
Vivasafaris run a number of lodges and all of them run somehow independently but their activities stream and get unified under some mother system. Drivers pick all the guests from Jburg in the morning and after lunch, the guests get sorted out into the different drivers for the lodges for their various 3 day 4 day safaris. You may somehow meet each other again when u go out to kruger or other game drives so meeting people is always fun.
We went for the 4 day treminisa and treehouse combination. Everything was fine and we had the thrills of off-road game drives. The one thing that no could predict was the weather and of course the animals. It was more than 40 degrees the entire time we were there. Which really made the animals difficult to find as they would be sleeping in the shade of the Bush. Unlucky for us, we didn't get to see any lions - not in the sunset drive or in kruger - although the groups the day before and after us got to see them.
On the second day, we were scheduled for a afternoon 3pm to 5pm game drive at treminisa after which we would be transferred to Marc's treehouse. On hindsight, I wished we requested to go to Marc treehouse earlier and join the guys over there for their sunset drive. Its only upon reaching marc treehouse at 7pm that I realised they just came back from their sunset drive and saw a family of rhinos. Maybe something that can be look into that especially during the hot summer temperatures as we really didn't see much during the hot afternoon game drive from 3 to 5pm.
So perhaps some flexibility to enhance customer experience is somewhat sacrificed cos of all the different logistics in running concurrent lodges. That being said, the managers and cooks and rangers were great. The food was great. Marc's treehouse is a rustic experience. Up close with the animals. Was positive overall.

Hi Evelyn Thanks for a detailed review. We are pleased to learn that "everything was fine" and that, despite missing game sightings that your co-visitors had, you were satisfied with the performance of our game rangers. It is good to read that your overall experience was positive. Be well. Piero

Incredible experience with a wonderful company!
Oct 2019
I came in a party of 10 university students and we decided to do a safari with Viva Safaris before flying to Cape Town for a study abroad trip. I cannot stress enough how amazing of a time we had! Viva did a wonderful job accommodating our large party, suiting our itinerary to fit our needs, and making sure each and every one of us had a great experience.
Our guides on each game drive were very professional and made sure we saw as many animals as possible by communicating with each other where the best sightings were happening. They were all friendly and answered all of our questions (and we had a lot of them!). It is clear that they enjoy what they do and really care about the quality of experience their guests are having. The bush walk was one of the most significant highlights of the trip, and I don't think I will ever forget the smoking of the elephant poop.
We spent two night at Marc's Treehouse Lodge and one night at the Tremisana game lodge. The hosts at each were kind, professional, and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The rooms were neat and clean, and the food was very tasty. I also celebrated a birthday during the trip and the hosts at both sites gave our entire group cakes to share! It was a very special surprise and it made my birthday that much more amazing.
Overall, this is an excellent company that offers very affordable packages. This has been the absolute highlight of the two months that our group has spent in South Africa. I made memories on this safari that will last a lifetime. Keep up the great work!

Hi Katie Thanks for an incredibly wonderful review. We are thrilled to know that 10 university students had such a fantastic time. Thanks for commending our staff in terms of their professionalism and friendliness. Good to read that you enjoyed smoking ellie dung on your bush walk- I am still undecided if and when I shall do so. We are pleased that the staff at Marcs and Tremisana made your birthday so amazing. We are humbled by your superlative assessment of Viva Safaris as a company - thanks ever so much ! Kind regards Piero

This was the most unforgettable experience of my life. I can’t praise the company enough, we stayed in Tremisana Lodge and Marc’s Treehouse and we’re not disappointed with either, Tremisana was stunning, amazing staff, warthogs eating right near us at breakfast and lunch! And Marc’s Treehouse was unlike anything I’ve ever done, so authentic! Amazing food, amazing staff - Bernard and Rex were fantastic!! We saw an unbelievable about of wildlife - 4/5 of the Big 5 (we were in the vicinity of a leopard too so very cool!!) We were honoured enough to see four black rhino, and two male cheetahs eating a recent kill. I can not recommend this enough, who wouldn’t want to eat dinner in the African bush with hyenas only six feet away!!!!

10/10, thank you so much for the trip of a lifetime.

We are pleased to read that you liked Tremisana Lodge, warthogs included, and the uniquely authentic Marc's Treehouse Lodge - it is indeed amazing. Great that you saw such brilliant wildlife - two cheetah on a kill is really very rare - well done ! Thanks for your amazing recommendation. Be well Piero

Four months is a fair time to backpack nine countries of Southern Af, but it fair goes in, and the dosh fair dwindles.
Been fortunate with wildlife times on previous jaunts round East & Central Af, so felt no desperate necessity - and funds wouldn't stretch anyway - to tick off park lists. Much of Botswana & Namibia beyond the reach of a solo budget backpacker, but Okavango was doable - a unique place; Luangwa in Zambia was a revelation; Liwonde in Malawi another under-the-radar.
But to cut to the chase: the end of the trip was nigh, and Kruger was the heffalump in the room.

Once in Joburg - fab hostel - suggested Viva, with pick-up from the door. Three nights/four days was goldilocks.

This was the most economical option for funds, time, distance & convenience, so had to grab the gnu by both horns (wouldn't risk a buffalo).
It proved to be very good value, but still by far the greatest expenditure of this four-month hurl. Still, a well worthwhile last hurrah.

So, hey-ho off we go....
Pick-up was fine in the minibus, the usual rumble in the concrete jungle accreting more companions - a diverse & companionable lot they were too - from various doors around the Gauteng sprawl.

A few hours along the road though was the most unexpectedly beautiful petrol station in all my born days: ALZU!
Outback from the small complex of restaurants & souvenir shops, you can lean on the wide arc of a balcony overlooking a mini-Serengeti amphitheatre: rhino, zebra, oryx, eland, ostrich (even emu!) & charming additions to my bird list like vermilion red bishops nesting in the reeds.
Plenty hours yet before Kruger, but what a random aperitif!

Lunch (extra) was at The Mayfly in Dullstroom: mobbed with shuttle tourists like ourselves, but a pleasant halt, especially if you can cram round an outside table & (eventually, service having to cope with the hungry hordes) tuck into a trout, the local speciality. Not as tasty nor atmospheric as the candlelit troot in Lesotho nor darkest Peru, but it tickled the tastebuds & tum nevertheless.

Dramatic rust & ochre rock architecture to admire while others were bric-a-bracking at craft stalls at the entrance to a tunnel through the mountain.

I suppose it must have been about seven hours since morning pick-up (but wasn't really measuring it: the logistics of independently getting here were just not on) we rocked up at Tremisana Lodge in Balule Nature Reserve, which is basically part of Kruger in a wider field.

Welcomed by Pretty, whose smile & attitude live up to her name.

Was expecting the room to be pretty basic, but it was actually a cosy disclosure. Having grown accustomed to scratchy dorms & scabby singles over four months of Southern Af, this was rather charming. (Some crits I've read: were they dumped in a muddy waterhole down the road, I pondered? Does not compute.) Shame, through early-to-rise safari necessity, wasn't able to sprawl for longer, but that would defeat the point of being here in the first place.

For a budget lodge, Tremisana is aesthetically designed, a pool in the centre of the nicely sculpted grounds, with wee arched bridges & warthog-cropped lawns. What cuteness-challenged philistine slandered them one of the Ugly Five? (Look in the mirror, buttface!) Poombas ROOL OK! This is also Mongooseland: tend your eggs. And Monkeyland: tend everything else while you're at it.

Food was a bit hum-ho, especially at the braai - but the latter was fantastic for hyenas at close quarters. And the general attitude was congenial: different folks from different walks, enjoying ourselves.

Despite the name, never expected bears at Balule, but wildlife was still not as rife as KrugerProper. No rain the main problem, and a dearth of waterholes for beasts to gather. Perhaps I'd been spoilt by Luangwa & Liwonde. However, still the feel of the bush, some good birds - the bushwalk in the heat was great, with Shannon & Rex.
(I've already commented a little further in my individual review of Tremisana, with a few negatives - no need to reiterate - refer there if you wish.)
This was a pretty pleasurable first part of the trip.

Marc's was to complement it well, with ample opportunity to boost the beasts (& birds) within official K Central.
Having spent many canvassed nights over the decades in the squelchy midge-infested wilds of the Scottish Highlands, it's hard to smother a chuckle how some folk are appalled by the experience in a furnished tent, in Kruger, sounds of the African bush, waking up to a giraffe peering over the fence in the backyard.

I can appreciate that Tremisana may lull into a false sense with its cutely appointed wee chalets, but this is closer to where it's at. Quite the hike from reception to the tents at the far end - treehouses en route pretty cool too, but the tent saved a wee bit for beers - still rustic lite. Wonderful to witness giraffes gallivanting in the field just behind, and a joy to catch late & early light from the granite slabs down by the shallow creek.

Marc's is aye in a state of flux, with comers & goers, and a great melting pot for international cameraderie, the day's reportings round the dinner table.
Had better nosh dished up elsewhere, but satisfying enough.
Victor is a hoot with his introductions & mangled attempts at various languages. Some dude claimed Afghan nationality, which threw Vic a bit, till it transpired the dude was actually a dyslexic from Austin. (I claim Antarctican ancestry myself, and it would have served me bloody well right if Mr Vic had called my bluff and greeted me in fluent Penguinese.)

One of the most endearing features about Marc's is a resident herd of one of the most elegant of local antelopes: the Nyala. Not skittish and very lovely. The in-house (all too frequently literally) vervet monkeys are a knot of naughty swarming vipers. Could watch their antics for hours; watch also anything you're not afraid to see for the last time, vanishing up a tree.

What an epic full day drive through Kruger Nico treated us to: a true privilege. The man epitomises all that is excellent in a guide & ranger: his bonhomie combined with professionalism, sharp eyes, confident driving skills, expert knowledge but down-to-earth explanation & grounded attitude. I think you get the gist. A joyful experience.

I also sing my admiration of sonsie Big Charl & Jordan, the Ray Mears of Kruger: Tree Hugger Extraordinaire, this handsome young bearded Afrikaaner dude is a legend of all things arboreal. That morning bushwalk just by the lodge was filled with one fascinating story of bushcraft after another. Under the radar and if anything more intrinsically intriguing than gawping at a buffalo or gnu gawping at you, how do ye doo. Aw Shucks Folks, I've gotten all man-huggy too: how embarrassing.

Thank you all: indeed a lekker pleasure.

Penultimate day of my latest chapter of wanderlust it may have been, but we still had the jaw-dropping halt at one of the world's most panoramic viewpoints: Blyde River Canyon.
Tickled anither troot at The Mayfly.
Made sure the driver stopped again at ALZU (make sure you remind them too).
Traffic was thick & drop-offs around Joburg involved erratic back-tracking, so took longer for some than would have been desired; but fortunately there were no urgent connections to be met, so all hokey-cokey hunky-dory. Door-to-door.

Thank you Viva much: indeed a lekker pleasure.

Absolutely brilliant experience and great value.

We loved our time with Viva Safaris. Pick-up/drop off in Johannesburg was very smooth (though it is a fairly long drive).
The various activities were all excellent, with bush walks and game drives spread throughout and one full day in the main Kruger Parc.
We saw all of the big 5 and much more.
The food and service at the lodges was great, particularly at Tremisana Lodge (which is also beautiful & has lovely accommodation).

Great experience until we discovered we were robbed.
Jan 2019 • Friends
First off Pretty and Ivy rock, they did a fabulous job. We were picked up at the airport upon arrival and brought to the Lodge for our first night. The rooms were small but comfortable with air con. The evening drive was great, we even saw rhinos. Then we were taken to a spot for dinner which was quite delicious. The first full day involved an early morning bush walk and then an afternoon drive before going to Marc's Treehouse for the night. The rooms vary there, we were pleased with our room while our friends were not with theirs but it's not like you're spending much time there. We were not informed that they would be entering to make our beds and later discovered that we had almost $600 (yes, I know we shouldn't have had that much on us) stolen from our luggage while we were out. So that sucks. We did inform Viva and they said they won't do anything and that no one will confess to seeing the money (big surprise there, thieves are usually very honest, smh). If you choose to go through this company, keep your valuables on you at all times.

Hi Nicole Thanks for that. Of course we are sorry that you lost money. There are omissions on your part : What you fail to mention is that you discovered the loss only after you returned to your hostel in Johannesburg. You also fail to mention that on the Welcome Letter you receive upon boarding our pickup vehicle, there is a clear and unambiguous statement : " SECURITY : Hand in valuables to the Camp Manager. Keep all cash, cell phones etc on you. " Did you not read this ? In addition the very same hostesses Pretty and Ivy would have told you this on arrival at Tremisana and Marcs. What is of the greatest concern to me is that the amounts allegedly stolen increased with successive emails you sent to our Office. That sucks !! Piero

Good experience, could be better in some aspects
Nov 2018 • Solo
The safari with Viva Safari Tours as a whole was a very good experience. I have to say although, that it could have been better regarding one aspect: The reason I went there was to see the Kruger park, to make game drives in the amazing Kruger Park. I booked the 4-day package, that mean I had 2 full days to spent there. I would like to have spent both my full days in Kruger park, what didn't happen. We spent only one day there (the 3rd day of the safari), on the other full day (the 2nd day of the safari) we did a walk between 6-9 am and then we stayed in the lodge from 9 pm till 3 pm! We spent 6 of the most important hours of the day (because after 6:30 pm it is getting dark) eating and resting and again eating and again resting...And then between 3-5 pm we did a drive near the lodge (not in Kruger Park), the same one that we had done the day before. The area near the lodge is a nice place, where you can see many animals, but there is nothing to compare with the beauty of the Kruger Park. Even in the packages of 5 days, they spent only 1 day in Kruger Park. It is for sure cheaper for Viva safaris to go only 1 day in Kruger, but actually that is the reason why we are coming from so far away there: to see the Kruger Park. I have to say the Viva safaris were very professional, they did everything that was included in the package and in a very professional way, although I must say, when I booked the safari I didn't know the differences between the types of the game drives (in the Kruger park, in the area of the lodge etc), I thought all the drives would be in the Kruger park, would be the same. So I 'm not complaining about not doing something they promised, but that they should organize it in a way that we could visit the Kruger park more (even if we had to pay a little more for that)

Hi Thanks for your review. We are grateful that you admit that you received exactly what you booked. Our safari packages include bush BBQ, 4h morning walk and various other options that are intended to give our guests a varied wildlife experience without any repetition. We offer a second day in Kruger to all guests that have booked our 6 day packages. We believe that we clearly and unambiguously describe all the facets of each and every one of our 23 products and are reluctant to change itineraries even if our guests wish to pay more. Be well Piero
