Highlights
  • Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, known as New Zealand’s best day trek
  • Take in panoramic views plus lava flows, an active crater, and alpine lakes
  • Walk with a pro guide who knows the route, conditions, and environment
  • Learn about the region's ecology and Lord of the Rings filming locations
What to Expect
Make your own way to join your guide at the designated meeting spot, where your guide provides a safety briefing and equipment needed for the day. Start your trek in Tongariro National Park—New Zealand’s oldest—on an easy track that follows Mangatepopo Stream up the valley. The trail gets steeper as you climb up to South Crater, ascending 425 feet (200 meters). Continue to Red Crater, Blue Lake, and Ketetahi Hut, taking in lovely views over Oturere Valley, the Kaimanawa range, Rangipo Desert, and Emerald Lakes.  A short climb to North Crater affords additional views before you zigzag over alpine vegetation, Mangatetipua Stream, open grassy areas, and native forest. Your 7-hour hike ends with refreshments at the Ketetahi parking lot. This hike ranges from easy to moderately challenging, and is ideal for active people with a good level of fitness.

We had the worst experience during the whole trip in new zealand because of the miserable behavior of the owner of Adrift He is also the one in charge to transfer the customers at the begining and end of the alpine crossing. The problem came after he picked us back from the

Response from Adriftnz77, Manager at Premium Tongariro Alpine Crossing Guided Trek
Responded 3 days ago
There was certainly an unfortunate chain of events after an otherwise excellent day on the crossing and I'm sorry it seems to have completely negated an otherwise enjoyable day in our national park. I am not the owner of Adrift (he was not in town that day) but I was the person who you talked to and mentioned in your review. Unfortunately there was an accident involving your rental car while you were away doing the crossing but in our defence I must clear up a few of your claims. Your vehicle was parked in an illegal and dangerous manner and I believe this was a contributing factor to the accident as well as the driving of our staff member. We as responders on trip advisor are not able to post photos to reviews which is a shame as these would clear up the matter immediately. It was my position then that we would share responsibility for the accident and you would accept the cost of damage to your car and we accept the cost of damage to ours (yes, we have a damaged vehicle also). You were opposed to this position and to that end I provided our insurance company and policy number for you to approach them via your own cover, which is the way these things are correctly handled. I was not going to simply pay you $4000 on the spot as you demanded. I have been in touch with our insurer and they are yet to hear from you in this matter but hopefully you will do so and conclude things to your satisfaction. I would also like to respond to your claim we 'ran away' or that we weren't helping you. After talking with police and providing insurance information I did leave as I had other guests who wanted to go back to their hotels. 2 of our guides spent some time taping up your car and making it driveable and they clearly did a good job as you had gone when I returned and had already checked out of your hotel when I came to see you at 8.20 the next morning. A great day on the crossing would have remained so had it not been for the car accident but it really is unfair you blame us entirely without attempting to honestly assess how your own actions contributed. Failing this I am sure an insurance claim through us will take care of things financially.

My friend and I did the Tongariro Northern Circuit with Adrift. The Adrift team are friendly and helpful. Our guide, Eliot, was knowledgeable, willing to help and easy to get along with. We could not fault him. The track itself is beautiful and an experience I would recommend

The alpine crossing really lived up to its name. It is such an amazing and unique hike where you get to experience so many amazing views and unique vistas. I cannot recommend these guys enough, especially in the winter, when the hike can get more treacherous.

When coming to New Zealand, I wanted to do the Tongariro Crossing. But, being there in winter, I didn't think it would be possible. But, with Adrift it was! And i am so happy I could do it, out of everything I did during my 2 month trip of NZ, this was the best! Braedon was my
