Having recently returned from a period of paid maternity leave, May kim is enjoying getting back to a job she loves. Over the past two years, she has excelled when faced with ETHOS led first aid training, risk assessment and food hygiene classes. Her local knowledge is exemplary and her grasp of English is going from strength to strength. We are therefore delighted that all of our efforts are paying off and allowed you to experience Sapa as it should be done. We are pleased you enjoyed the hospitality, food and conversation. Thanks again for joining ETHOS in Sapa and we hope to see you again if ever you travel in the region again.

If you are travelling to Sapa then I’d highly recommend doing an experience with Ethos otherwise, in my opinion, Sapa will most likely disappoint. I don’t believe you’d get a full understand of the area without experiencing it alongside a local. Sapa town is highly touristic but

Space is empty, but human experiences, relationships, emotions and thoughts breathe life into space, transforming it into place. Differentiating between Sapa town and the wider district is important when choosing a trek. Sapa is a huge area with a central town and 94 villages and hamlets. All tour companies offering packages from Hanoi, booked from hotels in Sapa or organised in tourism information office in Sapa offer pretty much the same trek. This sometimes gives the illusion of over-tourism. They sell these tours to make a profit. Their objective is to minimise costs and maximise profits. Sapa has long since been famous for its spectacular scenery but it’s our strong emphasis on culture, people and friendship that sets us apart as unique and we are delighted you enjoyed this. As our newest guide, Chu is still improving her language skills. Her cultural knowledge is second to none and she really enjoys showing travellers her culture and community. It is worth remembering that in most instances, travellers see what they see, while tourists see what they come to see.

As locals who grew up in the Sapa region, our guide team are cultural experts that know all the best trekking routes. While villages like Lao Chai, Ta Van and Giang Ta Chai have developed to cater for tourists, they have lost their traditional charm. If you need WiFi, a hot shower and access to bars and a pool table, then these are the villages for you. They have a backpacker feel and are good places to meet other travellers. That said, they do experience a large volume of tour groups every day. These are the villages people are talking about whenever they mention that Sapa is too touristic. They are not representative of the wider area. Meanwhile ETHOS trek in 47 different villages with 20 different ethnic groups and across four northern provinces. Our treks have a very strong cultural emphasis and we are extremely proud of our guides who use their expertise to assure travellers really get to see the real Sapa in areas that are unspoilt and authentic. My (your guide) has excellent English and is a great cook. We are pleased she was able to convey the positive impacts we are having on the local community. My herself leads our human trafficking and awareness workshops and these are making a huge difference to the lives of young girls in the region. That you for choosing ETHOS and of course thank you for your fantastic review. My will be very pleased to hear of your enthusiasm and positivity.

Creating a unique human experience that assures maximum positives for both travellers and locals is essential for genuine, sustainable, community based tourism. With a strong cultural emphasis, ETHOS experiences depend on the skills of our guides and we are thrilled you enjoyed your time with Ker so much. Not only is she incredibly knowledgeable, but her willingness to learn makes her thrive as a team leader and positive role model in her own community. She is committed to preserving traditional Hmong skills while also embracing change. Ker is active in teaching her own community about human trafficking as well as leading frequent health and hygiene workshops. Thank you for your wonderful review and for choosing ETHOS in Sapa.
