- Michael F0 contributionsMust do experience in KolkataA fantastic experience for the whole family! We are from the US and having visited India before had always avoided street food and many outside places for fear of food poisoning and other issues. Avik completely relaxed all our fears. We did the tour with 2 young kids under 9 years old and were definitely a bit nervous about what to expect. However Avik took my son by the hand and off we went! He mixed in some famous street foods with stories and tours of off the beaten path neighborhoods that we never would have visited otherwise. We also hit some popular spots that were familiar to my Bengali in laws and Avik impressed even them! He really brought out the nostalgia from them! We have already referred several friends. This is a MUST DO for any Kolkata trip!Written 22 November 2023
- Sam K0 contributionsExcellent guided food tour in KolkataGreat food tour! Avik was extremely informative and provided us with an authentic culinary experience at multiple ‘off-the beaten-track’ venues we would never have otherwise come across! It was also great to experience some local modalities of transport including the metro, bus and rickshaw giving a true taste of Kolkata culture not just limited to food. Avik was very knowledgable and shared lots of incredible insights into the history of the city and food with us, all whilst making us feel very comfortable on the tour. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to experience food & drink highlights of a huge city!Written 19 November 2023

Avik led us to many longstanding restaurants where we sampled a variety of Bengali specialties. We enjoyed learning about the history and present day realities of life in Kolkata as well as riding the subway, rickshaw and bus. Avik has a passion for what he is creating through this tour and we wish him the best of success! This tour offers a stimulating evening of experiences, food and learning.Written 26 October 2023

Quirky, yet engaging. The tour and guide was energetic and fitting to the atmosphere in Kolkata, which is much the same. The hustle and bustle of the city was matched perfectly to the food, giving the feeling of being local. From one place to the next, we were given a run through of the history and mixed modes of transportation allowed us to really SEE the city. From the trader areas, to the more modern parts of Kolkata, this was a fantastic way to blend sightseeing with food tasting.
As for the food, we tried the most amazing local curry - hands down the best mutton dish I have ever eaten. To the point where my friend and I had to retrace our steps to find this dish again. Buried away at the corner of a street, this is easily missed if you aren't paying attention. From fish dishes, to the stronger meats like mutton, to veg, snacks and masala tea - this tour was both packed with flavoursome dishes as it was enthusiasm, and showcases the best of Kolkata.
Definitely not to be missed!!

We had an amazing insight into the life of the real people of Kolkata as well as eating terrific food. With Avik we rode on local buses and rickshaws to parts of the city a tourist would never find. Walking along narrow alleyways of old colonial houses, faded now but still with beautiful wrought iron balconies and carved shutters revealing an elegant past, Avik explained the past and present of the city. We visited the tiny workshop of a clockmaker as well as a street of bookshops. He chose the eating stops with care, some owned by the same family over several generations. So much food, so much fun! It’s a must- must -do.

Ive been in Kolkata four weeks and I feel that only now after the tour with Avik am I beginning to understand the city and appreciate its mystery and charm. The local dishes we tried were delicious (goat with cinnamon curry, coconut prawn curry, savoury mango fritters.. and more), but what I loved the most was getting outside of the chaotic center and seeing the softer side of this historic city.
Highly recommended!!

This is a tour not only about delicious street food but also about the experience of charming old Kolkata.
My tour guide Avik told me many about the foods, the history and stories about Kolkata, and took me to many delicious and amazing places which I think I can never find it by myself. He showed me many sides of old Kolkata, a chaotic noisy place with peaceful quiet neighborhoods, exotic old buildings of colonial times with traditional lifestyles and culture, a nondigital world but everyone can find fun whoever you are rich or poor.
So if you want to explore the foods and some very local places of this city but have no idea where to go, then I think this tour will be a safe and efficient choice to you.

As a guide I’ve never had one so fantastic as Avik. Eloquent in recounting heroic stories of Kolkata’s past while introducing me to delicious food, articulate in regaling me with the fascinating history of the City of Joy. Avik has an excellent command of the English language and we breezily switched between English and our native tongue Bengali when chatting about the food and the attractions he took me to. Avik took the time to go through the list of attractions to get a feel for what I would love to eat - and he made it all happen! A nice well thought out itinerary - we covered some of the best things the city has to offer, including delicious food. Along the way I found Avik warm, kind, personable and helpful. If you come to Kolkata I highly recommend Avik as a guide to show you around especially when it comes to yummy food - he made my experience unforgettable! Thank you!

My Kolkata food tour with Avik was a super introduction to the cuisine of this city and its history and communities. Not only did I try some exciting and diverse food (so much food!) but also I learnt a lot about the city's past and its make up today. Exploring Shyambazar in the north of the city was illuminating for me as I had previously only spent time in the centre. I recommend this tour for anyone with an interest in food and in venturing into the heart of the city.

We had a fantastic time on Avik’s food tour of Kolkata. From the outset when meeting him at the chaotic Esplanade station, to the bus ride to end the tour, we felt comfortable and safe in his company. Although we tried several brilliant Kolkata favourites, the food took a back seat to the amazing cultural side of Kolkata that Avik was able to show us - travelling around via several different means, walking through the oldest suburb in Kolkata, and standing at a busy junction to people watch - this trip had it all, and no question was too much for Avik. Our highlight was the perfect prawn cutlet we had at Allen’s, but all the food was lovely. A great night out in Kolkata with the brilliant Avik.

This is a must do tour in Kolkata! Our guide Avik knew exactly where to find all the local foodie hotspots. The food was delicious, authentic, and had just enough variety to keep us interested for over 4 hours! We also learned a lot about the food, its origins, why it's important or significant to the people here in Kolkata. I feel like we got more than just a food tour, but a deep look into Indian life through their cuisine. I will also mention that doing this food tour at night was amazing. We got to experience a bit of the local life in the evening from a safe and controlled manner. I feel like I got to know Kolkata way more than I thought was possible for a visitor. Amazing!

We had an excellent food tour with Avik from A Chef's Tour. The best thing about this tour is that Avik takes you through a part of the city that you likely wouldn't visit on your own when visiting the city. Avik taught us so much about Kolkata's history and culture while we ate so many incredible dishes specific to Kolkata and West Bengal. Every time we started to feel full he would take us to a new area and share stories of the area with us, breaking up the eating just enough to never feel over-full. Avik has put so much consideration and time into making this tour very high quality, and his knowledge of the food and how it is tied to Kolkata is unmatched! We took this tour on our first day in the city and are so glad we did because it is the perfect introduction to a part of India that is new to us. In addition to the incredible food we also rode in a human-powered rickshaw (a very important part of the economy in Kolkata) and took a public bus. We had so much fun!

This was an amazing tour with an extremely knowledgeable local guide, who provided so much more than merely an outstanding culinary experience. Avik provided unique insights and opportunities to really get to know the neighborhoods we visited. I would strongly recommend this for anyone interested in getting an insider’s feel for the City of of Joy .
