    A wonderful experience in Kalimpong
It was one of the best guided tours I have had! Rabindra Rai was so knowledgeable and so affable. He kept me engaged for the whole day as he described the history and culture of Kalimpong. Everything was so interesting and well-researched. He even described the flora and fauna! We went for a walk in the town and a village, and had a delicious lunch on a terrace at a local home. Thank you for a fabulous day!

Enjoying the peace of a tea estate 😊
Thus tour was brilliant and exactly what I wanted it to be. We were taken out of the city and into the sprawling beauty of one of the tea estates where we ambled through the hills whilst Anirban explained the stages of tea bush growth and the laborious task of tea plucking. It was a beautiful day and Anirban obvious passion for his home state shone through, giving us all a chance to appreciate the intricacies of begali life at play below the superficial facade. We had some delicious carrot cake & tea before we set off and a delicious home cooked lunch on our return 😋 Brilliant!

    A unique memorable experience.
I don't know how I came across Darjeeling walks while searching on the net,but I thank my fate for it because I couldn't have got the kind of trip that I wanted had it not been perfectly curated by Mr.Anirban.We were treated as their guests in true sense by the whole team, had not to bother even once about any arrangement including transport, stay, tickets, permissions, etc.Got a different touristy thrill in their village walks, conversing all the while, actually getting to know this beautiful part of the country through its passionate inhabitants. This experience will stay with me lifelong. Thanks!

Truly the best hosts a traveler can expect
Darjeeling Walks more than fulfilled all our expectations as far as a trip full of knowledge sharing was concerned. Rabindra, the Explorer was a treasure trove of information and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok through the eyes of a local who kept updating us with the folklore and other insights that one would never find on the internet. Through his talks, he got us as close to the lives of the locals as any explorer could. Tales of the old colonial era that were told while visiting the local markets et all cannot be expected from any run of the mill travel company and thanks to Rabindra being such an amazing story teller, our this domestic trip was like the ones we've enjoyed through multiple walking tours all over Europe. Also, meeting either Anirban or Rabindra felt like meeting old friends thanks to personal touches such as Rabindra buying a woolen cap for my husband as a gift, making us sample various teas and local food and not letting us pay for it at all, bringing fresh guavas or avocados plucked by Rabindra's father for us in the wee hours of the day, meeting their family, dropping us right until the reception of our hotel to name a few. Moreover, it was very kind of Anirban to adjust our previous balance with them when our planned trip in 2022 had to be canceled. Again, this is not something that one would expect a big and a typical "tour agency" to do. To summarize, for anyone who wishes to understand this much misunderstood north eastern part of India, there can not be a better group than Darjeeling Walks to do so.

    Unbeaten tracks, unforgettable experiences.
We had a fantastic time with Anirban-ji on Darjeeling Walks over the course of several days. We were given insight into the diverse heritage of Darjeeling - the various peoples and histories of this place. We visited hidden gems, walked the unbeaten track and experienced living traditions. We learnt about communities that have been marginalised but are rich in culture. With care, consideration and hospitality, Darjeeling Walks offers experiences that will stay with you for a life. And all of this done with a soft footprint and in conjunction with the communities you visit. A must.

Could not have asked for a better bespoke holiday made by Darjeeling Walks! Fairy Betula!
Darjeeling Walks (Anirban and Adijte) must be the best Tour Operator in the region! Simply an outstanding tailor-made 2-week holiday for myself and my daughter starting in Darjeeling and then onto Sikkim. Highlights are hard to pin point. I loved the day spent on Ging Tea Garden amongst the tea pluckers learning all about Darjeeling tea. Our guide and drivers took us to various beautiful villages in rural Sikkim with breathtaking views of the Khangchendzonga range early mornings. The flowers of Spring (Rhodedhendrons, azaleas, amaryllis, orchids and many more) were out in their full glory. We spent the days hiking along hidden paths viewpoints, visiting temples ( learning about Guru Padmasambhava) as well as walking through the hillside villages so we could chat to the locals and learn all about their way of life. In the evenings, we stayed in homestays (some eco) which were charming, the families always keen to make sure that we were comfortable and very well fed (daal and locally produced fresh vegetables). In Yuksom, we were even invited to a "mo-mo" making cookery class and afterwards our hostess taught us some nepalese dance moves! At the end of the holiday, we spent a day in Rinchenpong which is incredibly interesting for its position on the silk route, its market still being an important trade centre and the influence of the Scottish missionaries in years gone by. Finally, we explored Nara Valley Wildlife Sanctuary and whilst we did not see any red pandas or tigers, we did visit an impressive waterfall at the bottom of the valley. Sikkim is a very special place that has not yet been spoilt by tourism.

    Walk with Darjeeling Walks
It was a great experience. We signed up as a study tour (67 members) for the walk cultural shock. Informative and interesting. The tea tasting and the lunch organised added to the understanding of interweaving native cultural habits.

    Educational and beautiful
The tour guide and driver were very kind and informative about the tea and culture of the region. I did the tour of the Ging Tea Estate. It was incredible beautiful and I couldn't stop asking questions and taking photos. The day ended with a delicious meal that was made with my dietary restrictions in mind. I hope one day to do another tour with Darjeeling Walks.

Wonderful day trip to the Tumsong Tea Retreat
We did the Tea Pluckers' Day on our only full day in Darjeeling, and we are so glad we chose this experience! Our guide Sunny was delightful to talk to; we learnt a lot from him about the area and its inhabitants. We visited the Tumsong Tea Retreat, which is a 2-hour drive from Darjeeling through scenic routes and tiny villages. The tea estate has an amazing location. We walked around the tea gardens, visited the factory, learnt about the estate, sipped tea in the garden, and had delicious lunch in the beautiful historical building.

Collection of wonderful experiences with a great partner
We read the excellent reviews that Darjeeling Walks had in viator and booked a whole day tea garden trip. We had the good fortune of being picked up by Anirban early in the morning and taken for a trip to Ging tea garden. We vibed immediately over our shared dislike for zoos. The entire day passed in exchange of information over tea, nature, food and everything under the sun. Personally I really appreciated the tea drinking and finally the lunch at the burra saheb bungalow. This has got stuck so much in our minds that we are forever fantasising about a future stay at ging tea house. That aside, the tea factory visit was a highlight and accompanied with the tasting of first and second flushes (very strong) was a much appreciated insight into our favourite intoxication. We loved the first trip so much that we had to book another one: nature trail. As part of this Anirban took us to a village and its adjoining tea garden and the forest. The forest experience was absolutely out of our regular world, notwithstanding the leeches. Once again we had an excellent lunch with some exotic local fare at a village home: neelam homestay amidst some fun conversation with Anirban. We also went for an elaborate tea testing and buying experience in the market and it was absolutely wonderful. Each tour has value, they are carefully crafted to offer an unique experience and is accompanied with an excellent partner from Darjeeling Walks. For us this was Anirban and we found an excellent, knowledgeable and easygoing friend who made some really courageous choices in life that we wished we could have made. If you wish to see a different darjeeling at a different level of quality beyond the crowd and sweater markets, look no further than Darjeeling Walks

Darjeeling Walks set me up for a truly meaningful travel experience to know, understand, see, and feel Darjeeling “from its very skin”. I came to Darjeeling for the first time and for research. Anirban and Rahul organized a very well-suited trip customized as per my request and made me feel at home in the hills. My itinerary included a couple of walking tours in and around the city of Darjeeling including the Colonial Heritage Walk and a visit to a beautiful and serene farming village.

I have my highest recommendations for the Colonial Heritage Walking Tour. This walking tour lets you dwell in the past of Darjeeling as you walk with Anirban, an avid explorer and storyteller, who unpacks the many veiled histories and stories of Darjeeling and its making, unmaking and remaking. This is an excellently curated itinerary with attention to facts and details ranging from the architectural and infrastructural heritage, the local milieu, the everyday lives of people of Darjeeling to the individual stories of eminent personalities who lived here.

In addition to the Colonial Heritage Walk, I also highly recommend the Culture Shock and Newari and Tibetan Food Experience that Darjeeling Walks conducts. Restaurant crawling and walking through hidden spaces in and around Chauk Bazar, these tours give glimpses of the many layers of food and trade cultures of the diverse ethno-religious communities who have been living in Darjeeling yet have fallen out of the radar of conventional gazes and imaginations.

Staying, hiking, and experiencing the slowness of life in a farming village in Darjeeling was unique for me. Living in a homestay in a remote farming village was not just an act of gazing and consuming the beauty of the place but we also got a chance to know the life stories of the homestay owners and developed meaningful relations with them. It was simply lovely!

Many thanks to the entire Darjeeling Walks team for curating such a creative and insightful array of tours! Hope to do more tours in the future.

Ranindra had sound knowledge of Darjeeling’s history. He was very good in handling a family with both old parents and young kids. He would patiently answer any questions and was happily accommodating requests from traveling parents. We definitely enjoyed the momos at the tiny local restaurant with him.
Overall I would highly recommend anyone traveling to Darjeeling to do this on first day to get to know Darjeeling better.

Anirban is a repository of information.
The walk started in Mall Road and took us through many important landmarks - talking us through the history and significance of the city, the politics, the religions, and the colonial influence on it all.
He also stopped at hidden gems along the way for some delicious food. A must do if you are in Darjeeling!

Booked this walking tour in the last week of July. Although initially quite apprehensive about how the tour would turn out to be, I am really glad that I went ahead with the booking.

I went for the morning slot when the traffic was sparse and the localities less crowded. The tour was ably guided by Yoksang, a very nice and well mannered guy from Darjeeling. He is very knowledgeable about the various nooks and corners of the city, and quite conversant with the relatively obscure but interesting historical tidbits associated with them. Not at all a time-watcher, Yoksang gave a detailed tour with a running commentary and patiently addressed all my queries to the best of his knowledge. He can hold a conversation well and I remember talking with him about a range of topics, from the contributions of the Koch Behar kings, contributions of the British, Darjeeling's relationship with Nepal and Sikkim, various architectural styles and religious places of worship, the Tibetan diaspora, the advent of Christianity, the sociopolitical developments over the years, and so on. Overall, it was a wholesome experience. I wish I had more time to explore the places and their histories.

Thank you Yoksang and team. Keep up the good work. I wish you all the best.

As a personal tradition and preference, I looked up walks in Darjeeling and stumbled upon this one. And there couldn’t have been a luckier find.

I picked the Colonial Heritage walk from the meticulously curated portfolio that Darjeeling Walks offers. Right from discussing the options, to the actual tour, I had a wonderful experience with Anirban and his team. They even managed the pick-up option for me (thanks, Rahul!) to ensure the whole activity was smooth and effortless.

The Colonial Heritage walk was led personally by Anirban, and I can vouch for his knowledge, keen observations and fondness for Darjeeling, that makes the entire experience unique. His personal efforts in giving the tourism and heritage of Darjeeling the facelift it needs, so to say, reflect in the anecdotes and narratives which make the walk fulfilling and informative. En route, we stopped by several locations, from the well-known tourist spots, to the ones that are on the brinks of collective memory. His information weaves in yesteryear details and the sign of the times, giving a wholesome cultural perspective of the place.

Thanks to Anirban’s efforts, I now perceive the Queen of Hills as more than an amalgamation of tea estates and pleasant weather – a location that holds a magnificent past (surprisingly peppered with a Hungarian thread of legacy), and large potential to be more.

Would definitely recommend this tour/ walk to anyone, who wishes to explore a place by foot, which is largely the best way to truly discover any place. Additionally, I’d urge all travelers to explore their other options that are curated to suit different tastes in exploration. Absolutely worth it!

If you like learning about culture and history, this is the best way to explore Darjeeling. The tour includes a 3 hour walk around the city, which sounds scary, but with the frequent stops it's absolutely manageable (coming from an amateur walker). The tour includes the major locations plus offbeat spots which are not accessible by cars and not known by most people. Our guide gave us a concise history of Darjeeling from its settlement to present day. It makes the Toy Train ride much more enriched if you know what you're seeing. He took us to a hidden restaurant which had a Tibetan snack known as Laphing which was absolutely amazing. Would definitely recommend the walking tour rather than cars to explore Darjeeling.

We spent three delightful days in Darjeeling in October 2023. (We are in our 70s and experienced travelers, including in India.) The trip was organized for us by Darjeeling Walks. Anirban, the founder, was extremely helpful with the planning and made all the reservations (hotel, airport transfers, tickets, and so on). Our guide during the three days, Sunny, was a pleasure. He is knowledgeable and very pleasant, and took us to two excellent tea plantations, the museum at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the Tibet Museum, and on a walking tour of the town – all of which were terrific! He also introduced us to momos and thukpa, two special culinary delights from the hills. The driver, Namgel, was also excellent, and managed to get us to the train station for the “toy train” ride despite the Darjeeling traffic. The Darjeeling Walks team made it a truly memorable trip.

We have always held this view the best way to know a city is on foot. At times, however, specially at famous destinations, we often end up visiting the well known spots thus just scratching the surface. Thankfully while in Darjeeling, we chanced upon "Darjeeling Walks" and their brochure piqued our curiosity. We signed up for their 3-hour walking tour around the town. We can safely say, on our own, we would never have known so many interesting places hidden in plain sight. Mr. Anirban, one of the founders, led us through a very insightful session, peppered with stories, facts and anecdotes about Darjeeling. You can sense his keen interest and passion for the place, as well as his commitment to sustainable tourism as he explains the history and keeps you engaged all along. Add to that some hot chai and kachoris, and you have a morning well spent !!
We are so glad we did the heritage walk, and cannot recommend them enough !

As someone who hasn't ventured out on foot before, I let my imaginations get the best of me. It happened to be a wonderful feeling when all my silent expectations were met during my first walking tour with Darjeeling Walks. I have been an avid follower of Darjeeling Walks since its inception. Anirban has given it the touch of an expert that he is in the field of travel and tourism. So I was really looking forward to starting my day with this walk hosted by Darjeeling Walks.

The Colonial Heritage Walk offered me more than what I expected with its awe-inspiring narratives and forgotten accounts from the hills. I felt the breathtaking vibes coming from the lush green mountains and the captivating tea estates along with the stories of grandeur and simplicity that were beautifully narrated to us by Anirban, the host. It was like an experience steeped in the culture and heritage of the region that I never had before.

To my great surprise, I wasn't tired even after strolling for three hours. It was probably because my mind was too occupied with curiosity and wonderment while we were walking along the hilly terrain and passing by its warm and welcoming people. As we were being guided by Anirban through the curved mountainous paths that led me to the rare and unknown points with centuries-old heritage, I felt my weariness was no more than a mere physical hindrance and could easily be shed off. Rahul with his little caring gestures ensured that I had a friend behind me throughout the walk. We stopped by and explored the places that are anything but touristy. We chatted with the locals on our way and took photographs while Anirban enlightened us about the history behind all the places that we visited and much more.

I recommend this walk strongly to all the explorers and travel enthusiasts who wish to remember a place by its true essence and not by its common attractions for the tourists. Kudos to Darjeeling Walks for brilliantly curating such an informative and alternative experience for the travellers! Having experienced the Summer Capital Walk, I can't be more certain that the other walks on the list would be just as enriching as this one that planted a fresh seed of exploration within me. I can't thank Anirban and Rahul enough for giving me this truly unforgettable experience and showing me around the erstwhile Summer Capital of the British Empire in a brand new light. I believe that no one should miss out on their specially crafted tours and experiences if they happen to be in Darjeeling.

When you travel to a new place, I believe the best takeaway you can have are interactions with people who are passionate about the history, & future, of the place. That is exactly what you get with the folks at Darjeeling Walks.

We had the pleasure of interacting with Anirban and meeting with Sunny. It was a fantastic experience! We spent a great morning travelling around with Sunny - his caring attitude & passion for the region only matched by his photography skills :) Also, gratitude to them to be able to make changes to the itinerary to suit us, since we were travelling with an infant.
