- Spinky830 contributionsImportant and moving experienceA very good and important tour. Our guide was fantastic and showed us around in a way that felt respectful to the people working and living in Dahravi. I can very much recommend this tour to get a better understanding of the slum.Written 15 March 2025
- LouiseS3040 contributionsA sensitive insight into the heart of an amazing community.Reality Gives are working as a part of Dharavi & 80% of the proceeds from the tour are given directly back to projects the run within the community. We met Riddhi at Churchgate Station & she travelled with us to the community where we also met Sabina. Both women live in Dharavi & shared their life experiences with us openly. The pride in the community shone through & the value of the work being carried out within Dharavi. Finding out more about the work Reality Gives does was also a highlight & you can see some of this on their website. A sensitive visit to help increase understanding & really giving something back to the community you are having the privilege to visit. Highly recommended way to see some of Mumbai which you might not otherwise experience. Leave your expectations behind & be ready to be moved by this experience. No photos as these are peoples homes & their community.Written 3 March 2025
- Dawn210 contributionsAmazing! We did the street food tour then the following day a private tour of the slums and rest of the day seeing the sites we’d not already seen. The guides Raj and Chetan were fantastic. It was great to be able to try foods we would never be brave enough to order. The private tour was perfect as we could customise it. Best Masala chai we’ve ever had from the street vendor. Loved all the history and the slum tour was a humbling and insightful experience not to be missed. Excellent value too and supporting education of the local population so you can’t get much better than that.Written 28 February 2025
- Culture7934750 contributionsEye opening experienceThe tour was really impressive and eye opening. It was a great experience to have this tour from a local guide, especially knowing that they company gives money back to the community. Would highly recommend.Written 27 February 2025
- SutSut0 contributionsVery educational and worthyWe had a good food tour with Rishi and I had asked him about the slum tour as my impression had been a negative one imagining it would be privileged people going to look at how the poor lived. It wasn’t like this at all. It was informative and fascinating to see how so many people can live in harmony in such close proximity also interesting facts such as the water supply is only available at certain hours in the day. The children are all very happy there and there is a thriving industry and incredible recycling of plastic that the rest of the world could learn from. I would recommend this tour for educating oneself and gaining a greater understanding and appreciation of others. I also love the ethos of Reality Tours as they fund projects in the slum.Written 23 February 2025
- Lulu6160 contributionsAmazing a must when visiting MumbaiWe spent two days with our guide Raj and got to see so much . Different drivers on each day but were also very good . We visited temples , historic sites , markets , streets , train station and the slums . So much information was given as Raj knowledge was incredible. This is definitely a trip not to miss when visiting . Timings and arrangements were spot on so no worries if on a cruise they will be there to meet you and get you back in plenty of timeWritten 22 February 2025
- Cameron C0 contributionsWonderfulI really enjoyed cruising the streets of Mumbai early in the morning before the traffic, the architecture and feel of the place by bike is simply amazing, so much to see and so many different experiences and interesting stops along the way.Written 21 February 2025
- Chris R0 contributionsInsightful and thought provoking tour. Was in two minds as to whether I should do this tour but glad I did. It’s a bustling, booming area. Insightful to see. I’m so sorry I don’t have the name of our guide but she grew up in the settlement. Thank you!Written 18 February 2025
- 435GordonM0 contributionsMumbai Slum Tour - brilliantThis was without doubt the highlight of our time in Mumbai. Visiting Dharavi was one of the top things on our agenda but had reservations about how to do this in a respectful manner. Reality Tours fitted the bill and were brilliant. The tour was insightful as well as enjoyable. The guide was brilliant giving enough detail without being over the top. I would highly recommend this trip to any visitor. There is no way you could do this by yourself and Reality Tours were brilliant. A massive thank you for giving us such a great experience. We did four tours with Reality across Mumbai and Delhi and were delighted with everything.Written 2 February 2025
- Luba D0 contributionsYes, it’s possible to see all of Mumbai in one dayAmazing! Unbelievable that I was able to see all Mumbai’s incredible sights in one day. The city is huge with many neighborhoods, historic and cultural sights and those beautiful temples but my great guide Sabina covered it all. Thank you!Written 26 January 2025
- ronyk7220 contributionsGet inspired by simplicityIt was a great personal experience. First - a guide is a MUST for 2 reasons: 1. You can easily get lost 2. You must hear the story Thinking of slum caused me to fill me pocket with change so I can give to beggars. But reality is so different. This is a city within a city. Fully functional, everybody works and contributes. Actually, without those working hands Mumbai and other parts of India will be affected. If you are looking for proportions, to be inspired by simplicity - you should go there. Tip- you will find few stores that sell bags, leathers and other handmade stuff. No-one will try to urge you - but it is highly recommended to take a look. Same is at the colorful market near by. I bought a hand made leader hand bag from a shop there. The quality is amazing - i shared a photo taken at the store entranceWritten 17 January 2025
- HotelBloke0 contributionsDharavi slum tour by Mumbai dream toursWe were recommended to Mumbai dream tours by a friend in London who had just returned. We were collected from our hotel (Taj Mahal Palace) and transported to the slum area where we met our guide Abhishek who explained all the various industries carried out in the “slum”. He changed our view of the slum from a deprived area to a hive of activity where families live for generations working hard to support each other. Abhishek himself had worked in the slum and now is the most excellent tour guide. He had us visiting many small workshops where people worked, slept and brought up their children. It was absolutely incredible. Dharavi is where the film Slumdog millionaire was filmed. Abhishek had us running (well walking carefully) through narrow alley ways, just like in the film. We met people he knew and who showed us what they do on a daily basis. FABULOUS Abhishek - we thoroughly recommend him and the company he works with. Arrangements were clear, they kept us fully informed right up to the moment they arrived to collect us. We were brought back after the tour too by our driver Manu. Many thanks: We highly recommend this tour, Mumbai dream tours And Abhishek Mumbaidreamtours.comWritten 10 January 2025

- R1156PHjanem0 contributionsAmazing village tourWe went on the village tour with Javed. It was a whole day tour from 8 am till approximately 6pm. We went on a Ferry to Mandwa and then a bus to Alibag beach and market. We got to eat Vada Pav, go to the Lotus lake and see women washing their family's clothes, see brick making, go to a local school, have lunch with a village family in their home, visit the tribal village and then see the piranha lake! It was an incredible day and I'm so thankful to have had this opportunity. Our guide, Javed, was amazing, friendly and super informative. Thank you for the wonderful work you do at Reality Tours.Written 16 December 2024
- R1156PHjanem0 contributionsBest tour I've been onThis tour was incredible from start to finish. Leena was out guide and is so professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Leena travelled with us by train to Dharavi and then took lots of time to show us through the commercial and residential parts of Dharavi. It was so eye opening and I learnt so much. It was great to see how much recycling happens here and see all the skilled/ hard workers in each section of the slum. People were very friendly and lots of children said hello as we walked around. I love what this NGO is doing, by putting 80 percent of the tour cost money back into the community, providing children in Dharavi with better educational options. Thank you so much for this wonderful afternoon, Leena 😊Written 8 December 2024

Reality Gives is more than just a tour company, 80% of their proceeds go directly to providing education & trading in the Dharavi community.
We landed in the morning & joined the street food tour the same night. Our guide Rishi met us & the rest of the group at Churchgate train station & guided us through our first experience of using the trains in Mumbai. We firstly went to the beach for sunset & ate what seemed like endless really tasty dishes in an amazing environment. Rishi was attentive to the whole group, explaining the foods, talking about the area & the culture & ensuring that everyone in the group had something they wanted to eat- he fetched more sweet items for the teens to match their tastes whilst allowing them to sample all of the food. He then guided us through some very busy areas, looking after the whole group & making us feel welcome & safe, explaining everything as we went along. We visited a restaurant for more food & drinks, tasting a different style of food, then we moved to the really busy Muslim area & to the charcoal grills & finally the dessert shops. The food was all incredible & doing this trip at the start of our week in Mumbai gave us the confidence to use the trains ourselves & to return to some of the areas for food later in the week- we went to the beach for sunset & pav bhaji twice more it was so good! There are other tours which look similar, but for value & cleanliness of everywhere we visited this was definitely a great choice. Reality Gives is a great organisation & chatting about the work they do was really interesting. It’s a fantastic opportunity to give something back whilst on holiday. They have a direct website to check out their work too.

Our guide Janna was great. He showed us the best places to eat with safe, hygienic and delicious food as well as taking us to some places off the beaten track which we wouldn't have discovered by ourselves.
Janna explained everything we ate to us and talked a little about the areas we went to so we learned a little about life in Mumbai.
All food and travel is included in the price (except travel to and from the hotel which you have to pay for but the guide will help you find the best way).
We had just one other person in our group making it up to 3 but Janna said they don't take groups larger than 5 to keep things more personal.
I would recommend this tour to anyone keen on trying some of Mumbai's many street food options safely and hygienically.

Don’t think we would have known where to start in terms of where to eat safely which is why this tour was so good. Nice to experience street food at sunset by the beach along with the locals and then head into a really busy part of the city for more food. Great to walk through the lively and busy districts to experience how everyone in Mumbai live their lives. All food delicious and neither of us got ill. Great vibe and enjoyed some tasty dishes 😋 Jenna the guide knowledgeable and kept us all
Together which was a feat!

What an amazing tour. Our guide, Janna, was fantastic, meeting us at Churchgate Station, we travel by local train, a great experience, to Chowpatty Beach to sample a great range of street food from the local vendors. We then travelled into the heart of the city experience street food from different cultures that make up this amazing city. To add to our great experience, we happen to be in the city during Ganesh Chaturthi festival which lasts for 10 days. We had the opportunity to witness the local traditions and customs up-close, with the evening streets coming alive with drummers and dancers. Janna, knowledge and help was outstanding. A highlight of our time in Mumbai.

For tourist not traveler.
Pros:
- you take a train
- you ride in a shared local cab
- you can eat a lot of snacks
Cons:
- guide was on their phone for the whole tour
- no facts and information was offered
- the guide did not seem interested in the tour at all or very knowledgeable about the food we were eating
- no customisation - although requested before the tour.
- really basic foods that are easy to find and google
We paid more for a private custom tour and agreed to focus the tour on non-veg options. What we got was obviously just the standard tour with no consultation about what we wanted.
If the guide was to quickly check preferences before ordering on our behalf and it would have been better.
In the end this was a very expensive way to eat some snacks we already had and some basic grilled chicken.
If you’re really nervous about eating out in Mumbai then MAYBE this is for you. If you’re looking for a foodie tour or are a seasoned traveler avoid this tour.

Dear Camper,
Firstly, we’re very sorry that the tour didn’t meet your expectations. Irrespective of our side of the story, we want all our guests to enjoy each and every tour with us.
We have spoken to the guide about the tour and this was his feedback:
- When you were eating at a restaurant, he had to call another restaurant to order food in advance. Other than that, he had his phone in his hand during the tour, but didn’t use it
- He gave plenty of information on the tour, not just about the food, but also about the religion and culture (which all of our guides are trained to do)
- Before the tour, he asked you whether you wanted to eat veg options, which you confirmed and then continually asked which dishes you wanted to eat, whether veg or non-veg. He offered you dishes that we don’t normally offer, such as brain, crispy chicken, kidney and liver, some of which you accepted
The guide has a gentle, calm nature, which maybe was interpreted as somebody not interested. He’s one of our most experienced and reliable guides.
The food itself has been carefully selected to offer a wide range of Indian cuisine from many parts of the country. It’s street food, so although very tasty with lots of different ingredients and spices, could be considered basic; it’s certainly not gourmet.
We’re very sorry that you felt it was an expensive tour. We hope that the majority of other reviews on this platform show that this is a minority view, but we have reached out to you to offer a significant discount. We hope that you find that a suitable compromise and we hope that you have a great holiday in Mumbai and India.
Safe travels

Interesting and tasty experience. We had a great time with our guidew who explained us a lot about the city, its people and the food of course. We tried many different types of food walked through the parts of the city we would never discovered alone and heard interesting stories. All food was included in price and there was no hidden marketing of any other shops or services. At the end of the evening tour we were full - of food and different experiences. Thank you!

Thanks to the clear instructions we easily found the meeting point, Nano warmly welcomed us and we started with a short train ride, the first stop at the beach was great, good food combined with sunset, we had so many different dishes to eat/try that the walking in between was necessary.
The food was a good mix of vegetarian, meet and sweet dishes.
The streets were super crowded and noisy but that’s Mumbai 😒
Nano was very friendly, attentive and had a lot of interesting facts and stories about Mumbai to tell.
He organized a safe trip back to the hotel in a cab.
We fell happily into our beds.
Would highly recommend this tour.

We wanted to do this tour first after arriving in Mumbai in order to learn more about what to eat and where to eat. Janna, our guide, provided a fantastic crashcourse for us! We had the opportunity to taste around 15 different dishes, all very tasty and safe. We recommend this tour to anyone that wants to learn more about Mumbai street food. If you can, do this early, that way you will be able to keep eating from the same stalls for the remaining of your stay(knowing that they are safe). That is what we did.

Mumbai can be a difficult place to know where to try street food so this tour is a great way of doing so whilst learning about the dish, understanding who it fits in to Mumbai culture and also learning a lot about Mumbai culture in general from the guide. We had Janna and he was fantastic. We also got to ride the train and take a shared taxi with the locals and Janna organised a fixed rate taxi to get me home safely from our last stop at a good price.
MOST IMPORTANTLY the tour researches the vendors beforehand so you can try street food without the stress of potentially getting sick. My stomach can vouch for this!
My only slight criticism is that there may have been slightly too much food for me LOL.

I’m writing this a few months after our tour, which in itself tells of its positive memory impact. We were so at ease by the clear text communications and friendliness of Raj, our guide. He gave us unique insights into the cities people, culture and flavours of Mumbai’s food. Yes go! It’s a fun lasting experience and the food is great. Thanks Raj😀
