About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- burnmary0 contributionsRecommend this tour!We had a day to spend in Guayaquil prior to Galapagos trip, and chose this tour based on rave reviews from Trip Advisor, convenience of hotel pickup, opportunity to see both agricultural and city sights, length of tour (10-4) and chance to learn about chocolate. The trip exceeded our expectations, one of the best tours we have ever had anywhere. The small 20 acre family farm produces cacao and rice. It is fun to learn how to make chocolate bar! Their three course lunch is farm-sourced, Instagram worthy, and safely prepared with bottled water. The guide and driver are outstanding and can answer any question about Ecuador. We recommend this tour without reservation for solos and for families.Written 2 November 2024
- KBTravels100 contributionsPerfect combination tourMario and his driver were amazing-I am so glad we booked this tour! There was great communication prior to the tour and he met us at our hotel with no issues. The cacao farm was fun and educational. Lunch at the farm was fabulous as well-very tender and tasty chicken. The city tour was adapted a bit to our needs and interests (it was just us). We felt very taken care of and saw a lot in a single day. Would definitely book with them again.Written 20 May 2024
- 840sheryced0 contributions5 Stars Are Not Enough!Five stars are not enough! Mario went above and beyond to accommodate us for our Guayaquil tour. From the moment we were met in our hotel lobby through the afternoon in and out of the comfortable, air condition van, Mario and his team insured our time was well spent. We finished with a deeper understanding of the cities, history, culture, and appreciation for its beauty and hospitality. We can’t wait to visit again and see more of Ecuador’s treasures. Thank you, Mario, Tony and Roberto for helping us fall in love with your lovely city.Written 30 April 2024
- Jae_5110 contributionsAmazing experience, would love to go againWe had such an amazing time with Mario. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and made us feel very well taken care of from the first moment he picked us up. The chocolate making was an incredible experience at a lovely family owned cocoa farm (amongst many other things they grow!). We learned a lot and tried some very delicious fruits and chocolates—they also cooked us a fantastic lunch. The city tour around Guayaquil was just as special and interesting. Mario went above and beyond to show us the city he loves and we left wanting to return for more. Very highly recommend this tour with My Trip to Ecuador!Written 11 February 2024
- debramV345FO0 contributionsGreat Cocoa FarmWe really enjoyed the trip to the cocoa farm. The information on farming and chocolate was great and making the chocolate was fun. The lunch served was delicious and artfully presented. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area, history and culture. The tour of the city felt like a bonus. Would highly recommended this tour.Written 2 December 2023
- Gibbo2180 contributionsExcellent small cocao plantation and city tourMario was very informative with in depth knowledge of the cocao process. Visiting a family’s plantation was more interesting than a large company’s plantation. The experience is hands on from picking a cocao pod, breaking it open, removing the seeds, then they gave us some dried seeds to roast, peel and put through a grinder which becomes a paste, which you add a percentage of sugar to and any other flavours you want such as salt, lemongrass, raisins, etc. The 3 course lunch was very good too. The walking city tour was also informative with Quayaquils history explained to us. Would definitely recommend this tour.Written 27 November 2023
- 955benedicta0 contributionsGreat trip, amazing guide, a must do!I’m so glad we booked with Mario for the layover sightseeing tour as we got to see so much of what the city had to offer despite our limited time. My only regret is not being able to stay in Guayaquil for longer to go on one of the other tours ‘My Trip To Ecuador’ offers - I’ll have to go back! Mario was really friendly, entertaining, extremely knowledgeable, made us feel very safe at all times and is an all round incredible guide - I’d highly recommend booking with him & ‘My Trip To Ecuador’Written 20 November 2023
- J4504CNcharlesb0 contributionsExperience the beauty of the Galapagos without any stressWe had such a great trip to the Galapagos. Everything was seamless and arranged so we could focus on enjoying the islands and the wildlife. Mario was very flexible with our schedule to be able to arrange tours that would work for us. I would recommend this company for any of my friends going to the Galapagos.Written 20 October 2023
- natashamansu0 contributionsBest week in Ecuador with Mario! We travelled to Riobamba, Quito, and Baños with Mario on a medical mission. From the moment he met us at the airport at 2AM up until he dropped us off at the airport at the end of the trip, Mario was the most kind, proactive, and fun-loving tour guide. We were a group of thirty, making logistics extremely difficult, yet Mario handled transportation, food, and differing needs with ease. His attention to detail coupled with his charisma meant we didn’t have to worry while we were working long days. I could not recommend MyTriptoEcuador more and look forward to returning again with Mario. If I could give him six stars, I would.Written 7 August 2023
- klantern0 contributionsGuayaquil city and countryIf you have one day in Guayaquil I highly recommend this tour. It’s an excellent mix of city and countryside. Mario, our guide, was terrific. He is punctual, knowledgeable, and considerate. He is passionate about the city and ensuring that we had a wonderful experience. Mario’s English is excellent which was great for us since our Spanish is a work in progress. The cocoa farm is picturesque. The tour is entertaining while being very educational. We also enjoyed a delicious lunch at the farm. Mario hired a driver so he was able to be fully engaged. Having a driver also made it easier to navigate the city. We hopped in and out at various tourist sites within Guayaquil. All in all, a great experience.Written 9 July 2023
- 277margareto0 contributionsIncredible way to spend a day in GuayaquilMy family of 10 had an amazing time on this tour. We had a day in Guayaquil prior to our Galapagos trip and this tour was the perfect addition to our itinerary. Marco is a passionate, hilarious and knowledgeable guide. He tells a lot of personal stories to really shed light on what life is like living in Ecuador. The cacao farm was incredible - we got to see how cacao is processed from the beginning to the end and we got to participate in many of the active parts of the process from picking the fruit to sucking the fruit off the seeds to roasting the seeds to churning the toasted seeds into cacao to making our own chocolate bars! The lunch was fantastic and we have a picky bunch! In the afternoon, Marco gave us a tour of some highlights of the city - we all loved the iguana park the best. Marco accommodated our request to stop by a market to pick up some souvenirs. Marco was one of the best tour guides we’ve ever had and we’ve been on a LOT of tours. Do yourself a favor and book this excellent tour!Written 27 June 2023
- MellitaI0 contributionsOne of the best city tours! What a fabulous trip! Mario our guide for the day was so passionate about Guayaquil and Ecuador and it was an absolute delight to spend the day with him learning about this city and country.Written 30 May 2023
- Beaulieu180 contributionsGreat walking tour in Guayaquil, great guideVia “Mytriptoecuador.ec" we booked a walking tour through the city of Guayaquil. We had a great guide:Tony Escobar. He speaks excellent English and knows so much about the culture, the history and all of the things that are worth while in Guayaquil to visit and see. He could even tell many things about the flowers and trees we saw during tge walk. Tony really opened our eyes for the beauty of Guayaquil. It is a beautiful city, with many nice buildings and monuments; both historical and modern. A highlight was the visit to Iguana park in the centre of the city, where many iguana’s run around free. In the park an Ecuadorean bigband was playing at the time. I can really recommend a walking tour in Guayaquil and especially Tony Escobar as a guide!Written 30 May 2023
- michelle m0 contributionsWalk through guayaquilThe city of Guayaquil is a perfect tourist place to walk, eat, play, have fun and learn more about this city, be it with your friends, boyfriend, children, or family. It is highly recommended to get to the rocks and go up to the lighthouse. Along the way you can find restaurants, historical parks, snacks, games, etc.Written 24 February 2023
- akblanco0 contributionsAmazing ExperienceIf you have a full day in Guayaquil, you need to go on this tour. It was one of the highlights of our entire trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos. Mario is truly the best guide I have ever had the pleasure of meeting! The cocoa farm was an incredible experience- we got to make our own chocolate and then enjoyed a delicious three course lunch. All the ingredients were either grown/raised on the farm or nearby (right down to the sugar for the coffee!). Mario was able to accommodate my food restriction so I could enjoy a delicious meal. We also got to make our own chocolate bars to take home with us. Afterwards, we enjoyed a tour of downtown Guayaquil, including the cathedral, iguana park, and the 444 steps. Mario shared the beautiful history of Ecuador and also provided us with great recommendations of places to eat during our last day in Guayaquil (which we ended up trying and enjoying). Mario us so knowledgeable, kind, and accommodating. I highly HIGHLY recommend this experience!!!Written 15 February 2023

I visit Ecuador annually. Two years ago I spent time with and reviewed Mario Fuentes owner of mytriptoecuador.com. I had the opportunity to bring a group to Ecuador again through Guayaquil and we hired Mario to work with us, translate (as we were on a medical mission in the Andes) and show us some sights around Guayaquil. We had an excellent time exploring a Cocoa farm south of Guayaquil and actually made some superb chocolate. Also after our mission Mario took us to Salinas and we spent a day chilling out on the beach before heading home. All of us thoroughly enjoyed his company and his expertise. I would highly recommend him to anyone traveling to Ecuador and entering or leaving the country through Guayaquil.

We were in Ecuador for two days, post a Galapagos trip, and had set up two tours with Mario. We were doing a city tour on 3/15 and then a tour to the Cocoa farm on 3/16. Well, on 3/15 we had to decide to stay or leave the country as they were closing the aiports at midnight that night. We could not go to Peru, our next destination, as they imposed a manditory 14 day quarantine so we started the hunt for a flight home at 4am on 3/15! Mario was so nice in offering to be our translator, come to the airport and help in any way he could and just get us information at at time when things were changing by the minute. But after we got home, and we were so lucky we did, he added to the amazing experence by giving us a refund for nearly all our cost of the trip, outside of what he could not get back from ourside vendors. He worked hard to get it back to us, as PayPal did not work but Zelle did. He did more than we could have ever expected. More than our Trip Insurance company is doing for us! We hope to be back in Ecuador and will contact Mario first to get his insight in helping us with planning our trip. We can not recommend him enough for personal or even for a business trip to Ecuador. He is honest, kind, speaks and writes emaculante English and was a light in a very dark and scary time. We can not thank him enough. Thank you so much Mario!!!

Thank you very much for this review. It was a pleasure for me to make the refund, and of course, I offered my assistance since I thought I may have been your only friend in Guayaquil.
Hope we can meet at some point in the future,

Possibly one of the best tours we’ve ever taken. Mario puts together an amazing experience at the cocao farm where he is an extension of the family there.
We began with a comfortable ride in a van while Mario provided information along our drive. He even stopped along the road to pickup bananas for our chocolate later. Because he hires a driver we were able to interact with him throughout, which was thoroughly enjoyable.
At the farm we took a short tour to see the wide variety of crops they grow and animals raised for the family, which is quite large. We broke open a ripe cacao fruit and tasted the fresh seeds (you suck on them, not chew).
Next we learned about and participated in the roasting and grinding of the beans. This was followed by tasting of the chocolate in various combinations with other items. We drank traditional drinks as well which were great.
Next we went to see you they turn the ground chocolate into a liquid form, cool, and we made our own bars by adding fruits and other items.
Finally, we enjoyed a wonderful 3 course lunch, sourced with ingredients from and around the farm and prepared with family recipes. The owner who runs the restaurant stopped by to make sure all was good and to tell us about herself and the recipes.
Mario clearly works to provide a premium tour and works hard to make sure we all enjoyed. This particular tour is one of his passions as he has a history with cacao farming. I would highly recommend any tour he offers!

Super friendly Mario took us on a tour of the Cocoa farm, a small independent operation near Guayaquil. It was a magical experience and we learned all about the farming of cocoa pods and making the purest chocolate I have ever had. Then we had an all organic lunch prepared by the gracious hosts. The farm is self sufficient and everything is produced there. A family run operation, it is a text book model of micro farming. When you are there you kind of wish the whole world was like that.
Mario is an expert chocolate maker and very knowledgeable about every aspect of the country and Latin America. The Lonely Planet calls him the best tour guide in Ecuador and it is a well deserved reputation. We traveled all over the country and his advice and help in planning was invaluable. This is only one tour he does and at the end of the day you will have a smile on your face.

Loved the personal trip with Mario - my mom and I had a great time learning about the entire chocolate-making process from plant to plate. It was nice to see the countryside and also monuments around the city. He was very accomodating with pick up/drop off and keeping our bags secure in the car. Much appreciated!

Mario is a superb guide and just an overall nice person,
he has expert knowledge of the local area and in particular the whole chocolate making process. the farm we went to knows that he knows the business and allows him to conduct the whole process. Mario speaks English perfectly. Mario also follows all Covid 19 protocols and asked us to keep our masks on except when eating. we did the whole process from harvesting the cocoa beans to heating them and then grinding the beans. Our souvenir: a home made chocolate bar for each of us.
One other note the traffic as very busy coming back to Guayaquil but Mario was safe and had us back to hotel at the time we planned for.
Best thing we did in Guayaquil.

From start to finish, what a great experience! Mario picked us up at our hotel in a clean and comfortable (air conditioned) suv and was engaging and friendly from the beginning. On the drive to the farm he pointed out many of the historic and interesting places along the way. Water was provided for the drive and I can’t say enough good things about Mario.
After a 30 minute drive along a well paved highway we turned off onto a country road. Don’t worry, he’s not kidnapping you, it’s just the way to the Cacao farm.
The farm is rustic and real! There are so many flowers and fruit trees, it is a beautiful working farm. They have multiple crops and a small river running next to the facilities. Mario explains the flowering and fruiting cycle of the Cacao, then you harvest one of the pods. We roasted our cacao pods and made pure chocolate from scratch. Then we were able to make and flavor our own chocolate bars to take as a souvenir ( coffee for me And orange for my wife).
Then we were serve an amazing 3 course lunch of which all the ingredients were produced on the farm. Incredible!!!
The farm also produces their own artisanal chocolate bars, coffee and honey products.
10 out of 10. Highly recommend!!!

This was one of the best tours we have ever taken. We learned about the entire process of how chocolate is made, from the flower to the finished bars and drinks. Our guide for the day was Allyson, and she was very warm and friendly. Back to the farm. We saw many different types of fruit trees while we were there, and had the opportunity to try some of the fruits we’ve never had before. Back to the chocolate process. This was extremely interactive, and our son, who has ADHD, was engaged the entire time. You really use your 5 senses to make the chocolate. There is a lot of hard work and time that goes into it. We had a couple of chocolate drinks (one cold and one hot), and both were great. I don’t want to give too much away as it was a very special tour. We did get to put our own ingredients in a chocolate bar to take with us. Lunch was wonderful! We had some allergies and food issues in the group, so they had to make a variety of items that tasted great. Everything was fresh, and the presentation was incredible. They served limonda at lunch which was really good too. For those wondering, they use filtered water, so it’s safe to drink. But bring some water with you on the tour, as it does get hot in the sun. You are in shade quite a bit, but water will help. Also, don’t skimp on the mosquito repellant. The organic ones don’t work well. There are a lot of mosquitos, but they also have mosquito spray that we used, and that stopped them from attacking us. My best advice is it’s annoying (and only for the first 30 minutes of the tour), but forget about it, and enjoy the farm. It’s amazing!

I was very fortunate to have Mario (the owner) as my guide, and he provided me with an exceptional experience today!!! Mario was nice, friendly and extremely knowledgeable in the local flora and fauna, and he made it very clear his primary interest was in my satisfaction with a memorable visit to Ecuador. First, we visited the Lara family farm where Mario and Alberto showed me how cocoa is made into dark chocolate bars and tasty hot chocolate beverages, and we even had an authentic home cooked Ecuadorian dish made by Ninfa Lara (who was also very friendly and welcoming, and an outstanding chef). After lunch, Mario and Jairo Lara took me to the protected forest of Churute for a small hike, where we found more than 12 howler monkeys, which was an amazing experience to hear them screaming and producing sounds so loud it makes them appear much larger than what they are!!! Then we also rented a motor boat and toured the mangrove forest preserve to look for exotic birds and crocodiles. I can say without a doubt you WILL NOT be disappointed with your experience by booking with this company!!!

I have heard Equador is not safe and tourists waiting for trip to Galapagos should not leave their hotel due to crime. Are there any American tourists that have travelled here recently with information?
