- lesliebauman0 contributionsRahat was an excellent guideWe definitely visited parts of the city we’d have never seen on our own. And we tried some interesting street food like their octopus. We found Osaka has a good vibe. Rahat is only 27 so some of his hidden gems were oriented towards the younger crowd but we enjoyed the sites even as senior citizens. And he knows the city and its history and Japanese habits and religion very well even though he’s an English man. Highly recommend his tour.Written 21 March 2025

- NBogle0 contributionsPerfect Mix of Famous Sights & Hidden Gems – A Must-Do in Osaka!Had an amazing time on the Osaka Kickstart: Hotspots and Hidden Gems tour! Our guides, Stephanie and Louis were fantastic—super friendly, knowledgeable, and full of great stories that made the city come alive. We visited some of Osaka’s famous spots, like the bright and buzzing Dotonbori, but what made the tour extra special were the hidden gems—those little alleyways and local spots you’d never find on your own. Highlights included Kuromon Ichiba Market, and trying fresh takoyaki and other tasty street food. Stephanie also gave us some great recommendations for places to eat and which really came in handy for lunch after the tour. The team at Osaka Food Tours are amazing, from their communication in the lead up to it, and on the day (I got lost and they called, found, and collected me so I didn’t miss out - legends), to the quality and variety of the food, the knowledge about Osakan culture and Kuromon’s history, and the candour my guide Anna had with the market owners. Our Osaka street food tour with Hugo was an unforgettable highlight of our trip! As a group of five young men, we came in with a lot of energy, and Hugo matched every bit of it with his incredible charisma and fun personality. He made us feel like locals as we explored hidden gems, indulged in Osaka’s legendary street food, and even joined in with the drinks.
Hugo wasn’t just a guide—he was the ultimate vibe-master. He kept us entertained throughout with his humor, local insights, and easygoing attitude. Whether it was cracking jokes, hyping us up over the perfect takoyaki, or recommending great spots for nightlife, he made the evening seamless and genuinely fun.
If you’re looking for an engaging guide who knows how to read the room, share authentic Osaka experiences, and have a blast, Hugo’s your guy. Highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants a mix of great food, drinks, and an evening filled with laughter!
Thanks for the memories, Hugo! 🍻🍢

We booked the food tour last minute with our family of five and met with our wonderful guide Anna. The maximum number in one group is 9 people) so we were joined with two other couples who were extremely lovely as well and this did not make the tour slower or worse in any way, on the contrary! So don’t hesitate to book if the reason is you don’t like group tours, this isn’t one of those! 😄
Anna took us on a food rollercoaster, enthusiastically including every single person of the group and joking along the way while still giving good insights and food tips. We visited 4-5 different places you would otherwise never find or dare to enter as a tourist.
We ended up in a karaoké bar for some drinks and songs and had a total blast. If this is not your thing, you can of course ask your guide for some nice addresses or bars or leave after the tour is over.
100% recommend, when in doubt, don’t doubt! The price is fair, considering you’ll have more than enough to eat, meet new people and places and get to know some hidden Osaka treasures. These guides know their way around and they’ll be happy to indulge you in the wonderful world of street food.

We had the pleasure of having Adam as our tour guide for the night through the Shinsekai market area. It was a blast! Adam took us to places we would be too intimidated to try otherwise since we cannot read the language. We started with some light yakitori then went to a stand up udon where the tofu was the star! Walking around the neighborhood with Adam was great because he was knowledgeable about the history and had fun facts and trivia. Our group was mixed with older folks and younger couples and Adam entertained all of us individually and as a group. Our group was really fun, I wish you all a happy and safe trip if you’re reading this! Our night ended with another set of restaurants that we wouldn’t think about going to with excellent dipping noodles at one and sweet fried shrimp and chicken wings.
This was a last minute addition to our itinerary and we’re glad we did the tour especially in the Osaka area. Absolutely worth the price given that the food was great tasting, Adam and our group was awesome, and time well spent learning the history of the place.
Thank you Adam! Hope to run into you again! Also thank you for sharing your own personal history and hope you get to open your dojo soon in the future.

If you’re considering the Deep Osaka Food Tours “Absolute Foodie Option,” I highly recommend reconsidering. Unfortunately, this experience was a huge letdown, especially for the $174 price tag. Osaka is renowned for its vibrant food culture, and I was eagerly anticipating an exceptional culinary journey, but this tour did not live up to that reputation.
To begin with, the tour started over 30 minutes late. The guide didn’t appear prepared, and, surprisingly, wasn’t one of the guides featured on their website. As soon as we started, she asked if anyone had dietary restrictions—information that was already collected when booking. I expected this to be handled in advance, so the restaurants would be ready. Despite us sharing our restrictions again, the guide didn’t clarify whether those with restrictions would get substitute options or just miss out on certain dishes. It left us uncertain and diminished the enjoyment.
Instead of planning alternate dishes, the guide simply doubled up on one type of food for those with restrictions. At another stop, the food item planned was already out, which was disappointing. And rather than tasting a variety of items, one of the stops served us a full bowl of noodles, which filled us up early in the tour. For a “tasting” experience, it left little room for the remaining stops, taking away from the diversity I expected.
The entire tour felt poorly planned and unprofessional. It felt like I’d paid a lot for an experience that didn’t deliver on its promises or Osaka’s food scene reputation. Honestly, you’d be better off exploring on your own, sampling dishes at your own pace. I wouldn’t recommend booking this tour—it feels over-hyped by media and appearances on platforms like Netflix, but sadly lacks in quality and organization.

This tour was essentially a bar crawl through the Atlantic City of Osaka, led by a Canadian expat whose main expertise seemed to be recounting his own drunken misadventures in Japan. The total value of the food and drinks provided couldn’t have been more than $10 per person, meaning we were really paying $80 for the experience. If you’re looking for any sort of cultural insight or authentic local experience, this tour completely misses the mark.
From the start, our guide focused almost entirely on his history of excessive drinking, constantly bragging about nights he couldn’t remember. At one point, he even said, “I’ve been to Thailand 7 or 8 times, though I can’t remember much because I was so drunk.” He didn’t provide any real history of Osaka or explain the food we were sampling—two key elements you’d expect from a tour like this. Meanwhile, any leftover food? The guide made sure to eat it himself while also out-drinking every paying customer.
Beyond the low-quality bar food and drinks, one of the more bizarre stops was outside an adult theater, where we stood around watching customers go in and out while the guide made juvenile jokes about the signage—particularly the images of “boobies” above the entrance.
For food recommendations, the guide’s top suggestion was a Costco hot dog. Yes, in a city famous for its world-class cuisine, we were advised to eat at Costco. He also recommended taking advantage of the free wine tastings there, adding that in Japan, “all white people look the same,” so you could get multiple rounds of free drinks.
The rest of the night included a history lesson about a beer vending machine and an hour of aimlessly walking in circles. The only redeeming part? We managed to get half our money refunded, which we wisely spent on actual food worth eating in Japan. If you’re visiting Osaka, skip this tour and explore the city’s incredible food scene on your own.

I recently embarked on the Osaka food tour that promised to be a culinary adventure through hidden eateries featured on "Somebody Feed Phil." While the tour delivered on its description, the experience left much to be desired.
Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, leading us to several establishments where we sampled a variety of Japanese street food staples like gyoza, takoyaki, and kitsune udon. However, the portions were disappointingly small, resembling more of a tasting menu than a satisfying meal.
Despite being labeled as "hidden," the eateries we visited were easily accessible and seemed like typical spots that any tourist could stumble upon. Furthermore, the selection of dishes offered nothing out of the ordinary; they were the basic street foods one would expect to find in Osaka.
Although the tour included two drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, they didn't compensate for the lackluster food experience. After the tour, I found myself still hungry and opted to dine elsewhere for a fulfilling meal.
In summary, while the tour provided a glimpse into Osaka's street food scene and the guide was pleasant, the overall experience felt overpriced for what amounted to a basic introduction to Japanese street cuisine. I would recommend skipping this tour and exploring the city's food offerings independently to truly savor the authentic flavors of Osaka.

The tour delivered what was promised in terms of number of dishes and establishments but we came away underwhelmed given the premium price. We've been in Japan for around a week and have greatly enjoyed the cuisine - from street vendors and low and mid-range restaurants, with and without reservations. We were expecting more than a tour around very cheap local establishments, with a couple of drinks thrown in. I was expecting some Kobe beef. At half the price the tour would have been expensive. Our last venue was outside and it was pretty chilly - it didn't lend itself to hanging around for drinks to chat with others in the group. On the positive side, our guide was informative and friendly and we got to try a some dishes we probably wouldn't have e.g., stingray and a hotpot. This tour probably best suits those who haven't already experienced a range of local food and aren’t expecting anything fancy or premium.

Thank so much for your review. We are sorry that it didn't meet your expectations. Our goal is to immerse our guests with the locals at very local eateries. We definitely don't do Kobe beef. It's just delicious, authentic Osakan food.
We always look to continually improve and we'll have a chat to the guides and see if we can make adjustments in other areas to make it incredibly memorable.
Enjoy Japan, be curious and adventurous.

Overall, I’m glad we did this tour — however, compared to other food tours we have done in other countries/cities, this was not as good. Coming from NYC where we do have access to international cuisines, this tour was pretty basic and geared towards someone with no prior experience with Japanese food at all. The neighborhood we visited, Shinsekai, was clearly a tourist area, which made it easier to navigate, and had some great photo spots, but overall the food was less exciting than in other areas that locals frequent, and we ended up walking the same loop two or three times. Our guide, Mark, kept saying “I bet you’ve never had THIS before” — in reference to, for example, udon noodles. (To his credit, I had never had stingray before and we did try that— that was cool and definitely novel.) I would say about half the foods we ate were especially delicious or interesting. I also felt a little put off by some comments our guide made — he was showing us local spots of interest in addition to the food stops, most of which were good, but one was a movie theatre with hand-painted signs. One door entered into a normal movie theatre with commercial movies; one door entered into a porno movie theatre. He gestured to the painted advertisement, which featured a naked woman reclining with a towel barely covering her crotch, and said “here you can see the flavor of the month.” Not a fan of that comment. That was a small moment in passing but as people who travel in order to gain more knowledge and respect for the culture and people of the country we’re visiting, it was really not what I was looking for in a food tour. Highlights included: kitsune udon noodle soup, Russian-Japanese fusion omelet, Osaka-style fried chicken, and potato katsu. Lowlights included meh sashimi and “Chinese style” dumplings from a chain restaurant. I most enjoyed the standing noodle counter with the kitsune udon soup, the food was delicious and I felt I learned something new about Japanese culture from eating in a different way.

We took this tour a few months ago and I am just writing this review because I wanted to give it time to make sure I still felt negatively about this tour before writing this. This tour was horrible. It did not match the description of the tour. We didn’t get half the food that was listed in the description and the food we did get was terrible. We actually left hungry and had to get dinner afterwards. I am honestly shocked that this tour has such high ratings. We ran into another couple that took the tour with us the next day wandering around Osaka and they asked what we thought of the tour. They also hated it. They said they left a 2-star review but I don’t see their review on this site - maybe they reviewed it elsewhere???The tour spent more time visiting the porn theater and bars where the guide sang songs. There was no background about the food, etc. I am giving this tour a 2-star review only because they did refund half of the tour costs otherwise I would have given it a 1-star. Please don’t waste your money.

Are Absolute Foodie and Drinks Foodie options all in the same tour group? We would like to book some hungry tickets, and some light tickets, but making sure we go along the same journey.
