      Fabulous experience
My adult sons and I had a private tea ceremony with Sana, who was fabulous. We loved the experience and all agree that it will be a highlight of our trip to Japan!

      Memorable Kimono Tea Ceremony
This tea ceremony was an excellent experience. The first part was selecting a kimono to wear, and the staff dressing you and your hair (this was done for both the men and the women). There was time before and after the tea ceremony for photo taking opportunities. The ceremony itself was conducted as a formal event and the history and mechanics of the tea ceremony were presented flawlessly. It was a great and memorable experience.

Wonderful experience wearing traditional kimono! Highly Recommend!
This was an amazing experience. The ladies who helped dress me were so kind and also explained to me so much history. I cannot recommend this place enough. They do have lockers to keep your things and allow you to explore the city with the kimono till 6 pm. Highly recommend booking early so that you have more selection of outfits to choose from!

      Highlight of Our Trip
We did the kimono rental and tea ceremony with a geisha. It was one of the highlights of our trip! Dressing in kimonos was a lot of fun and spending time with the geisha and the tea ceremony showed us a lot about Japanese culture. The company did a great job at making sure that everything runs smoothly. The kimono rental ladies are magical and transform you in 15 minutes.

      Kimono experience
Thoroughly enjoyed wearing a kimono. Short tea ceremony very interesting although matcha tea not to my taste. Instruction very precise and informative. Myself and my friend were able to sit on a low stool rather than the floor. Thoroughly recommend this tea ceremony

      Beautiful tea ceremony
We had an incredible experience at Kimono Tea Ceremony Maikoya Kyoto! Our hostess, Dodo, was amazing and created a beautiful atmosphere for us during the tea ceremony. We gained valuable insights into Japanese traditions and the art of making matcha tea. The duration of the activity was perfect. We highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Kyoto.

      Highlight of our Japan holiday
It was a great experience and strongly suggest the ceremony with Kimono. We were a family of 6 and got great photos in Kimonos in the gardens on the premises.

      Highlight of our trip!
Went to the Tokyo location for tea ceremony and kimono experience. I cannot speak more highly of the opportunity! Well organized, friendly staff, skilled dressers, lovely introduction to tea ceremony, so much to learn in a hospitable environment. Two lovely gardens on the property are available for taking photos, they also provide traditional umbrellas to complete your look. My husband was made entirely comfortable during the experience. 10 stars!

      Not just a matcha experience
My recent tea ceremony experience in Japan wasn't just about sipping matcha; it was a dive into tranquility and cultural immersion. The hostess, a fountain of knowledge and humor, guided us through the ceremony, making it both educational and lighthearted. Dressed in stunning kimonos, we felt transported to another era. But the best part? Keeping the kimonos till 6pm allowed us to explore the Senso-Ji temple fully dressed. This wasn't just a tea ceremony. If you seek a unique and unforgettable experience in Japan, this tea ceremony is an absolute must! Highlights: Knowledgeable and engaging hostess: Her expertise and humor made the ceremony informative and enjoyable. High-quality kimonos: Wearing these beautiful garments added to the immersive experience. Extended kimono wear: Exploring the temple after the ceremony. Overall: A highly recommended experience for anyone seeking a unique and enriching cultural immersion in Japan.

Comfortable tea ceremony with all the bells
Getting dressed up in a traditional kimono was a real treat. The tea ceremony itself was informative and the hostess had a good sense of humor. The property is well signed and tucked away along a stone path away from the Main Street. The garden is beautiful and peaceful.

Today my wife and I visited one of the best experiences of our 2 week holiday. We arrived with warm welcomes from all of the ladies who immediately ushered us to our separated dressing rooms to select our kimonos, to which they provided a wide range of colours and styles and even offered to style the ladies hair in traditional styles. We were then provided the time to take photos in their picturesque gardens with a number of traditional props. On completion of the pictures we moved to the tea ceremony which we both found the most culturally informative experience of our trip. This included a variety of small treats and a matcha tea each.

Overall this experience was great value for money and would highly recommend to anyone wishing to broaden their cultural experience of Japan.

A really lovely experience. I always worry that these tourist experiences will feel like a conveyor belt, but they put you into small groups and it still feels intimate and not rushed. I think it's a really good price for the combined tea ceremony, kimono and ninja Samurai museum

Excellent first experience in Kyoto. Highlights were getting in character by wearing kimonos and the well-organised and information hosts. There are numerous and varied opportunities for photos. The main photo is slightly misleading as the ceremony takes place with around 10 others but it’s very good value overall.

A completely unforgetful overbooking with +50 persons in a small space meaning we, among others, were in the wrong spot to catch a glimpse of the ceremony. We also started with a, to be nice, quite confusing tour of the premises with probably 10 out of +50 could hear what the Lady said. This tour needs to be reorganised cause right now its close to a ripoff.

It seems you left the review to a wrong venue, as we do not offer tours for 50 people nor can our tea room accommodate such a large group. If you visited our historic machiya organized by a third party, we kindly ask that you direct your review to them, as it seems there may have been confusion about the venue. Our space is typically booked well in advance to ensure a comfortable experience for our guests, and we prioritize providing personalized service without overcrowding. We value your feedback and apologize for any confusion. If you have any further concerns or would like to discuss your experience in more detail, please don't hesitate to reach out to us directly. We strive to provide exceptional experiences for all our guests and appreciate the opportunity to address any issues that may arise. Thank you

It’s super fun to do. People help you dress in traditional clothing and then attend and perform a tea ceremony.

The hosts are very nice, explain everything very well and take the time to answer questions. The atmosphere is relaxed and it is not necessary to have an excellent level of English to understand

    Plus it’s very well located.

This experience was extraordinary and one that me and my family will remember for a lifetime. I booked this ceremony after reading reviews and checking in with other tea ceremony options (others were only offered in Japanese). I’m very happy that I selected this option over others based on the following:

    1. We loved the atmosphere of the tea house. It was very calming to sit in while listening to the tea ceremony process. It is beautiful inside and in the courtyard area.

    2. The staff is very very lovely and nice to guests. They went above and beyond after a small mix up when we arrived. It was a wonderful experience meeting them.

    3. We enjoyed wearing a kimono and they dressed us with great detail and effort.

    4. The tea ceremony was beautiful and very peaceful. Almost like a mediation, we walked out feeling calm and relaxed.

    5. The price is very affordable for the experience received.

My husband and teenage son loved the experience as well, we all highly recommend this experience.

This was such a beautiful experience that my friends and I loved! It was one of our favourites things to have done throughout our whole trip! We got dressed up in the kimonos and we felt like princesses we didn't want to take them off at the end! Our tea ceremony included a brief talk about the history of the tea ceremony. Then our host went through the cleansing process and the tea making and taught us how to properly make matcha tea. We were provided with Yatsuhashi- a traditional dessert almost like mochi which we ate before the tea. After the ceremony we went into the garden and took lots of pictures, I recommend this to everyone and was very worth the value!

This experience was so special and amazing. We were carefully dressed and treated so well by the ladies who were all so respectful and spoke English. They helped us with our hair and picking our kimono. Then we were taken to a wonderful garden where we were allowed to take photos in our kimono.

The tea ceremony was so educational and entertaining. It felt so important and special, and the amazing lady who guided us through it, Sono, was so funny as well as educational. She was able to connect with us (she also speaks French!) and has been doing tea ceremonies since she was 19. She is a pro, and was very lovely and made the experience such a joy. We also enjoyed 2 Japanese sweets alongside the tea and she explained all the meaning behind each part of the ceremony without making it feel like a lecture.

This was such a special experience. I had booked months in advance and it was a highlight of my trip. I knew it is possible to rent kimono to walk around the streets but I did not want to do that, but to experience wearing one in a more traditional and culturally appropriate setting. I attended alone as my other family members were doing other activities and I was made to feel very welcome. After I was checked in, I was shown to the changing area where I chose my kimono - I wanted green shades as I’m Irish. And then had my hair done in a simple but lovely style with flowers. Everything was done very efficiently and so well organised. I was given a numbered bag to put my everyday clothes into and it was safely stored away and a little Japanese kimono bag to hold my mobile phone and glasses. I was given a simple long undergarment to wear under the kimono. Those ladies are incredible how they can tie you into it so quickly and make it so elegantly. One size fits all, I’m rather top heavy and was worried I’d look inappropriate wearing it, especially as I’m not Japanese. I felt fabulous in it, so elegant, not a word usually associated with me! It really gave me an appreciation of the extraordinary and beautiful garment that a kimono is.
The tea ceremony was beautiful, our host explained the significance and etiquette behind each part of the process. Lots of time to take photos and as I was alone the staff ensured to take pictures for me. So special. I cannot recommend highly enough, thank you Maikoya for a wonderful experience.

We are a family with 2 children age 10 and 7 and the experience gave us a glimpse of traditional Japanese culture. Our host, Tomoko, spoke really good English and explained things very carefully. They also helped us to take photos throughout and the memories from it will last a lifetime! It was a very calm and peaceful setting and I would recommend it to all who want to learn more about the traditional Japanese culture. My children sat through the ceremony without problems and my youngest even liked the taste of the matcha tea.
The only reason for taking a star off was that it was rather difficult to get in touch via email beforehand when I wanted to reschedule as they were not very responsive to emails. Other than that, the whole experience was great.
